  • johnny saint is a legend, pure technique, a superb wrestler, thanks for posting

  • Honestly, I'm of the impression that the best wrestlers do come from Europe. No offense to any American, Mexican, or Japanese wrestlers, but watching these two is so fascinating. Its pure competition, and as the commentator mentioned, it is silky smooth. These two are some of the best in the world today, and I'm glad that I could see just one round.

  • Johnny Saint Great as ever. Superb wrestler and a legend, he`s up there with the Royal brothers in my opinion.

  • @glendunbar Chikara Pro just had Johnny Saint vs Johnny Kidd this past weekend (7/30 and 7/31)...my mind was blown watching them in action.

  • The British style strikes me as something that requires a lot of thought, more subtle than the American style. As a indy wrestler would have loved to have had the oppurtunity to go there, but alas it was not to be.

  • What kind of wrestling is this? More of a realistic version of wrestling with rounds and everything and no punches

  • Now, to hunt for Johnny Saint vs Les Kellet!

  • So, this is Pure wrestling. Some of it looks slightly bizarre to me (1:58-2:07), but overall I think it's pretty good. Definitely a change of pace from what I normally watch. (Japanese junior heavyweights, lucha, etc. The really acrobatic stuff.) i definitely like this, though. May have to hunt down more. Sort of curious how Lou Thesz would have fared in a match like this, though. Pretty well, I bet.

  • @astrosteve Lou Thesz stated in several interviews(if you search, you can find one of them on YouTube) that he thought the best wrestlers in the world come from England, I have no doubt it was from watching gentlemen like Johnny Saint in action.

  • The bout starts at 0:53, but the vid is only 5:14. Give the time keeper a public warning!

  • @CharlotteNCMan Your obviously just trying to wind people up. You dont like Saint or other men over 40 wrestling, that's you perogative, but you shouldn't keep posting about it just looking for a fight. Whether you like it or not Johnny Saint in an internationally respected and admired wreslter who influenced many others styles and still has a massive fanbase today for his in-ring excellence, regardless of his age he is still a draw.

  • Mr. Saint is 100% pure class and a gentleman's gentleman

  • A work of art, indeed.

  • @CharlotteNCMan but you keep watching it lmao

  • these guys need money? i remember when johnny kidd was indeed just a kid and a first class babyface jobber. goodbye at under three minutes.

  • He came to Runcorn wrestling academy Saturday gone, and shown us some amazing stuff, such an Honor! such an honor that he watched our wrestling show aswell!!

  • It's a shame Saint vs. Thesz never happened.

  • Its more of a display of technical moves rather than an actual match.

Not really getting how much some of you are gushing over this.

  • Yeah I agree if you can't appreciate this..you just don't get wrestling.

  • VERY FAKE INDEED,

  • 2:03 The fakest thing I've ever seen

  • Shame Saint vs. Steve grey couldn't happen again.

  • just class

  • If you can't appreciate the last 5 minutes of wrestling you just watched, you are beyond help...quite simply a work of genius by the greatest lightweight wrestler who has ever lived.

  • a fantastic match

  • happy 67th Mr. Saint!

    Saint>Danielson

  • Johnny Saint one of the true greats

  • he wrestled Colt Cabana last weekend.

  • Comment removed

  • Good match. Full with technique.

  • Look this technic!!

  • Johnny Saint = Legend

  • He's touring this year again, he's part of the King of Trios for Chikara this weekend, and this year marks his 50th year in Pro Wrestling.

  • Great Match only in the UK

  • Saint vs. Malenko would be a brilliant bout.

  • He's come back now, thank goodness!

  • Well, the basic idea of a wrestling match is to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat for a count of 3 or make him/her submit, but I think most of the world has forgotten that.

  • A very interesting match. Johnny Saint is obviously technically sound and very smooth & fluid. The match looks a little choreographed though IMHO.

  • Not as choreographed as those spotfests you see on the US indies.

  • Thanks for posting this. Great match by two legends!

  • This is a classic, gentlemanly kind of wrestling. Saint just does everything with such grace and ease.

Besides, this is only the first round, mate!

  • There have been a few "men of a thousand holds." But I think Malenko borrowed the title from Karl Gotch who was living in Tampa, Fla and trained with the Malenkos on occasion. Gotch, however, was trained in Wigan with the likes of Billy Robinson, and he was god friends with Billy's uncle Alfie- who trained Saint. A little bit of history. Saint is one of my favorites.

  • Saint's style was inspired by George Kidd, who held the British Lightweight title for 26 years.

  • Saint will wrestle in germany, oberhausen on 8th and 9th of october for wxw/Chikara

  • johnny saint is awesome!

  • oh and hes retiring this year i believe :(

  • johnny kidds my uncle go johnny thsi was in 2007 he might train me to be wrestler lo fun

  • I've collected over 60 of Saint's matches from over the years. The man was simply amazing in his prime and seemingly only got better with age.

He and Johnny Eagles practically wrote the book when it comes to creative ways to escape holds.

  • Johnny Saint is so innovative. You just don't see that sort of wrestling any more. Japan went for the big stiff King's Road style and America went for the high spots.

  • These guys worked a wristlock primarily for 5 minutes and kept it interesting. Excellent work.

  • Saint is a legend and then some..

Proud to be a fellow manc..lol

  • Skill like that at 66 years of age! It's hard to express how proud it makes me to be a Brit when we have guys who can outclass a lot of wrestlers in their prime today. Britain's pensioners trump the worlds elite! Please post more of Saint and any other british legends if you have any.

  • Johnny Saint competed on this mornings LDN Capital TV against Jon Ritchie. A rematch has been booked, Mr Saint will be back in action for LDN in the August

  • Pardon me... would you happen to have any Grey Poupon ?

  • saint rules

    from germany

  • These guys make Bryan Danielson look like a green trainee.

  • What's up with the suuuper sloow tempo?!

  • British wrestling was always more slow, methodical and caculated than the American style. With British wrestling it was all about holds, submissions and counters..not so much with the (super)heavyweights admittedly...while the Americans liked punches, kicks, suplexes and acrobatics.

The British were at one point in time the best catch-as-catch-can wrestlers in the world and Johnny Saint was one of the best to ever use that style...him and George Kidd.

  • I was there, it wss a great night with stars including kendo nagasaki, who must have been stareing at ME for about 2 minutes although it felt like 2 hours!

  • & people say Hogan, Austin, Flair & Whoever are th best wrestlers in the world.

  • There are still people who say that? lol

  • Yes, because wrestling is intended to entertain people and the greatest entertainers were the likes of Hogan and Flair.

  • If you like bloated fools that can't wrestle worth a nickel and get by on the strength of their one-liners and what they wear, then yes. Hogan and Flair are truly great entertainers.

I like wrestling though, so that doesn't apply.

  • Unfortunately most people are entertained by those supposedly bloated fools. And connecting with an audience is truly what matters in proffesional wrestling.

Technical skill, which can be admired, is often irrelevant to entertaining people. It's a sad reality, but western proffesional wrestling is about charisma and character more than technical ability.

  • Yes, and that's the most annoying part about it.

  • exactly I couldnt agree more

  • Very Nice! Seeing Johnny Saint come out of retirement and seeing him still be able to demonstrate such manouvers... top droor!

  • how old is Johnny Saint. good old school match

  • I'm not sure how old he is but he's probably in his 70's. He had his first professional match in 1958 after all

  • He's in his early to mid-60s. He would've started working in his teens.

  • 66.

  • You obviously have no tatse for classic British wrestling.

  • was the one I responded to removed?

  • There has been some deleting going on.

  • got the chance to see this live was brill

  • He's a pro and a traditionalist, I would have thought he'd have left it till the ring.

  • its brittish wrestling, it looks a lot more real than pro wrestling.

  • This is techincal wrestling...this is a famous style in Britain and they like it. You never see this in America because thats not what Americans like. This is more like...smart wrestling that you have to think about. It's more about move and counter-move rather than beating a guy because a storyline says you have to.

  • 'hadlocks and chinloks match', yes, that would be a wrestling match and Israel don't rule.

  • I know this is the main reason people will buy this dvd, but why can't you treat the fans of British wrestling for once and upload the full match?

  • Maybe you can treat the promoter for once by actually paying for the DVD.

  • I'm suprised Japanese promotions never booked Kidd or Steve Grey, the fans would adore them over there.

I wonder if Saint will get to go over there again now that he's back, that would be good to see.

  • excellent wrestling ring action can we see more legends wrestling bouts

  • The only way to view the entire bout is to purcahse the DVD- it will be on sale very shortly.

  • Johnny Saint IS a legend folks, he was my Saturday tea time viewing on STV's Wolrd Of Sport for many years . i was a teenager at the time , now 45 and i still love to see these old time wrestlers from the UK perform .

i wish the rest of this bout was online tho.

  • "And that's the end of Round One."

    Okay...where's the rest of it?

Someone had posted a three-part Johnny Saint/Robbie Brookside match awhile ago and I thought it was fantastic. It was my first impression of that British style of wrestling and fell in love with it. There's all sorts of little nuances to the way that Johnny Saint reverses and applies holes.

  • The DVD will be on sale in the New Year.

  • This will teach me to look more carefully at the "About this Video" section.

I may very well order it, actually. Are there more matches similar to this style?

  • The show features Mal Sanders vs. James Mason, Brian Maxine vs. Johnny Kidd (he wrestled twice), a tag involving Blondie Barrett & Robbie Brookside and also Jon Ritche in action.

  • He's 65! Honestly man watch his early stuff the man is great.

  • I was at the show and it was great. Too many matches today usually involve guys punching and kicking and using chairs to get the crowd excited. Adult members of the crowd were really into the match, but it was a shame to see the kids weren't - especially those sat in front of us, who were talking about what a great match they thought Mark Henry and Batista had on Smackdown. MARK HENRY! BATISTA! They don't know 10 holds, let alone 1000.

  • An absolute masterclass. Johnny Saint should be lauded as the living legend he truly is.

As for tiger95... sir, please shut the fuck up and think before you comment. (I'd say more about him, but badboyboo kinda hit the nail on the head.)

  • Saint could piss allover anyone on the ROH roster, which comprises of "technique and ability...and 30 spots per match" and all of those spots are rehearsed so no wonder some of the young ones don't know how to wrestle properly.

  • Nice one! Well done LDN :)

  • Johnny Kidd - My hero. Absolutely superb viewing.

  • I don't understand? i've heard of johnny Saint and heard what a legend he is, maybe i would have had to see him in his prime? He is very agile for an older man but i'm missing the 'technical skills' that were mentioned by the comentator. Is it purely for the name that people like to watch this or am i really missing the point?

  • This is AWESOME! thanks for the great vid. I'm a Johnny Saint fan and really appreciate this video! Is he coming out of retirement? Got anymore vids? thanks again!

  • An excellent display of catch-as-catch-can wrestling. Johnny Saint moves better in the ring at age 65 than Terry Funk can at 62 or even Ric Flair at 58.

  • Well tiger95, you are one really stupid dickhead. Technique and ability as opposed to ballbrained musclemen playing at tarts in ROH or WWF? I know what I'd prefer, but there's no accounting for the taste of retards.

  • Tiger, I'm going to try and speak to you in much the same way that Johnny Saint wrestles: as a gentlemen.

The kind of style of wrestling you're used to is not wrestling in its purest definition. Ring of Honor, while entertaining, has a very stiff Japanese style but little sense of style. A lot of guys will go out there and just do a series of "cool" moves, including big spots 20 minutes (sometimes 3 or more) that could easily have been the finish.

  • Ring Of Honor does NOT have a Japanese style in the slightest. It has a piss-poor rip-off of what these spot monkeys THINK is a Japanese style, i.e. stiffness, headdrops and every other move a finisher.

They completely miss the real point of Japanese wrestling, not to mention that they're too clueless to realise that a good wrestler caters to his audience - and the majority of American fans don't respond to Puro style, genuine or ripped off.

  • People will usually be quick to say ROH guys have a more Puroresu style since whenever they watch an ROH match they see more wrestling than they do in mainstream promotions like WWE and the like. That focus more on big name guys going out there for a bit and not doing anything too stiff to eachother or not doing anything too wild in the ring.

The only time you'll see Puroresu styles of Jr Heavyweight/Cruiserweight, King's Road/Strong Style in ROH is when they bring in a Japanese worker.

  • While my namesake may be an ROH wrestler, I agree with you. ROH is more like a glorified ECW wannabe. Truthfully, CHIKARA is closer to Puro than ROH

  • While I agree with the sentiment, the way you put it is stretching a bit; CHIKARA is more lucha than anything else.

  • I agree with you to a certain point: but I look at it more as Lucharesu (kind of like what Osaka Pro, Michinoku Pro, DDT, DragonGate are)

  • Nigel, Davey Richards, Bryan Danielson, Go Shiozaki, and a few more all have the puro style. And ROH is anything but an ECW ripoff; they focus on wrestling with some hardcore thrown in, not the other way around. The point of ROH is to bring a bunch of styles together, and thats what they do. There will be matches on the same card that a puro fan will love and the next match will feature the briscoes and jack evans that they will hate. too many people piss on it, but it's by far the best weve got

  • Johnny Saint wrestled an entire tour for Michinoku Pro in 1996 having matches with Yakushiji and MEN'S Teioh. I am almost certain that he wrestled his last match in 2000, not 1996.

He hasn't slowed down a bit. What a wrestler...

  • america loves Johnny Saint, a legend

  • Myself, my mum, my partner and my friends were in attendance for this show.

Mr Bagga, I have to say this, you've done the British wrestling scene proud.

Well done on such a great show.

  • John Atkins hits the nail on the head, "this is the SPORT of Wrestling at its very best." A true masterclass and an absolute pleasure to watch.

  • Wow, Saint's a league above any wrestler that ever lived, at 65 and debuted 49 years ago. It is commonly thought he retired in 1996, but he admitted in an interview he went on to wrestle in England until '98. When you compare his skills now to other wrestlers of his age or any wrestler of any age, he is a phenom.

  • He actually stopped wrestling in 1999, after his one and only match in Japan for Michinoku Pro, versus Naohiro Hoshikawa. Great match.

  • That match was in 1996 at the 'These Days' event. He forfeited the Lightweight Title following that match. He continued to wrestle in England on and off until 1998.

This was not his only M-Pro match. He did an entire tour. Highlights of one of his other M-pro matches made it to one of their commercial releases.

  • That's odd - in the video I have of that match, the programme states that it's in 1999. Must've been a glitch or something.

I should've realised it wouldn't be his only match - given the way Japan works, it must've been a tour. Dim of me.

  • No biggie. Just thought I would share some of my useless knowledge.

    Pearl Jam fan are you?

  • Not particularly - why do you ask?

  • Evenflow << Pearl Jam song.

I could watch Johnny Saint wrestle for hours. And never see him do the same thing twice.

  • Ah, right. I just got it from Raven's "Evenflow DDT", which, I think, sounds better than "The Raven Effect". Now I get where he got the name of the move from.

    Thanks.

  • Funny because "black" is also a Pearl Jam song from their first (and awesome) album.

  • Ah, right - I just took the "Black" part because I liked the name of Chono's step-up yakuza kick, the Shining Black.

  • Every active British promoter should watch this and realise that this is British wrestling at its best.

Every active British wrestler should watch this and realise they should stop trying to be American, Japanese and Mexican and concentrate on making British wrestling unique again and this is what it should be to set it apart from the other different styles of wrestling. This is British wrestling and what made it so damn good and unique back in the days of World of Sport.

    Well done to LDN.

  • That was a pure pleasure to watch. Not only did it bring back fond memories it had the technical splendour thats missing now-a-days.. Keep up the good work LDN
