Honestly, I'm of the impression that the best wrestlers do come from Europe. No offense to any American, Mexican, or Japanese wrestlers, but watching these two is so fascinating. Its pure competition, and as the commentator mentioned, it is silky smooth. These two are some of the best in the world today, and I'm glad that I could see just one round.
The British style strikes me as something that requires a lot of thought, more subtle than the American style. As a indy wrestler would have loved to have had the oppurtunity to go there, but alas it was not to be.
So, this is Pure wrestling. Some of it looks slightly bizarre to me (1:58-2:07), but overall I think it's pretty good. Definitely a change of pace from what I normally watch. (Japanese junior heavyweights, lucha, etc. The really acrobatic stuff.) i definitely like this, though. May have to hunt down more. Sort of curious how Lou Thesz would have fared in a match like this, though. Pretty well, I bet.
@astrosteve Lou Thesz stated in several interviews(if you search, you can find one of them on YouTube) that he thought the best wrestlers in the world come from England, I have no doubt it was from watching gentlemen like Johnny Saint in action.
@CharlotteNCMan Your obviously just trying to wind people up. You dont like Saint or other men over 40 wrestling, that's you perogative, but you shouldn't keep posting about it just looking for a fight. Whether you like it or not Johnny Saint in an internationally respected and admired wreslter who influenced many others styles and still has a massive fanbase today for his in-ring excellence, regardless of his age he is still a draw.
He came to Runcorn wrestling academy Saturday gone, and shown us some amazing stuff, such an Honor! such an honor that he watched our wrestling show aswell!!
If you can't appreciate the last 5 minutes of wrestling you just watched, you are beyond help...quite simply a work of genius by the greatest lightweight wrestler who has ever lived.
Well, the basic idea of a wrestling match is to pin your opponents shoulders to the mat for a count of 3 or make him/her submit, but I think most of the world has forgotten that.
There have been a few "men of a thousand holds." But I think Malenko borrowed the title from Karl Gotch who was living in Tampa, Fla and trained with the Malenkos on occasion. Gotch, however, was trained in Wigan with the likes of Billy Robinson, and he was god friends with Billy's uncle Alfie- who trained Saint. A little bit of history. Saint is one of my favorites.
Johnny Saint is so innovative. You just don't see that sort of wrestling any more. Japan went for the big stiff King's Road style and America went for the high spots.
Skill like that at 66 years of age! It's hard to express how proud it makes me to be a Brit when we have guys who can outclass a lot of wrestlers in their prime today. Britain's pensioners trump the worlds elite! Please post more of Saint and any other british legends if you have any.
Johnny Saint competed on this mornings LDN Capital TV against Jon Ritchie. A rematch has been booked, Mr Saint will be back in action for LDN in the August
British wrestling was always more slow, methodical and caculated than the American style. With British wrestling it was all about holds, submissions and counters..not so much with the (super)heavyweights admittedly...while the Americans liked punches, kicks, suplexes and acrobatics.
The British were at one point in time the best catch-as-catch-can wrestlers in the world and Johnny Saint was one of the best to ever use that style...him and George Kidd.
I was there, it wss a great night with stars including kendo nagasaki, who must have been stareing at ME for about 2 minutes although it felt like 2 hours!
If you like bloated fools that can't wrestle worth a nickel and get by on the strength of their one-liners and what they wear, then yes. Hogan and Flair are truly great entertainers.
Unfortunately most people are entertained by those supposedly bloated fools. And connecting with an audience is truly what matters in proffesional wrestling.
Technical skill, which can be admired, is often irrelevant to entertaining people. It's a sad reality, but western proffesional wrestling is about charisma and character more than technical ability.
This is techincal wrestling...this is a famous style in Britain and they like it. You never see this in America because thats not what Americans like. This is more like...smart wrestling that you have to think about. It's more about move and counter-move rather than beating a guy because a storyline says you have to.
Johnny Saint IS a legend folks, he was my Saturday tea time viewing on STV's Wolrd Of Sport for many years . i was a teenager at the time , now 45 and i still love to see these old time wrestlers from the UK perform .
Someone had posted a three-part Johnny Saint/Robbie Brookside match awhile ago and I thought it was fantastic. It was my first impression of that British style of wrestling and fell in love with it. There's all sorts of little nuances to the way that Johnny Saint reverses and applies holes.
The show features Mal Sanders vs. James Mason, Brian Maxine vs. Johnny Kidd (he wrestled twice), a tag involving Blondie Barrett & Robbie Brookside and also Jon Ritche in action.
I was at the show and it was great. Too many matches today usually involve guys punching and kicking and using chairs to get the crowd excited. Adult members of the crowd were really into the match, but it was a shame to see the kids weren't - especially those sat in front of us, who were talking about what a great match they thought Mark Henry and Batista had on Smackdown. MARK HENRY! BATISTA! They don't know 10 holds, let alone 1000.
Saint could piss allover anyone on the ROH roster, which comprises of "technique and ability...and 30 spots per match" and all of those spots are rehearsed so no wonder some of the young ones don't know how to wrestle properly.
I don't understand? i've heard of johnny Saint and heard what a legend he is, maybe i would have had to see him in his prime? He is very agile for an older man but i'm missing the 'technical skills' that were mentioned by the comentator. Is it purely for the name that people like to watch this or am i really missing the point?
This is AWESOME! thanks for the great vid. I'm a Johnny Saint fan and really appreciate this video! Is he coming out of retirement? Got anymore vids? thanks again!
An excellent display of catch-as-catch-can wrestling. Johnny Saint moves better in the ring at age 65 than Terry Funk can at 62 or even Ric Flair at 58.

wow. thats the biggest piece of crap i've ever seen.two old guys dancing in pants. it was like watching the special olympics, you know what they should be doing but what your actually seeing is just all kinds of wrong. this is why british wrestling died. c.m punk would school them and make it hurt real bad. long live ring of honour and i hope i never have to see anything this bad again.
Well tiger95, you are one really stupid dickhead. Technique and ability as opposed to ballbrained musclemen playing at tarts in ROH or WWF? I know what I'd prefer, but there's no accounting for the taste of retards.
Tiger, I'm going to try and speak to you in much the same way that Johnny Saint wrestles: as a gentlemen.
The kind of style of wrestling you're used to is not wrestling in its purest definition. Ring of Honor, while entertaining, has a very stiff Japanese style but little sense of style. A lot of guys will go out there and just do a series of "cool" moves, including big spots 20 minutes (sometimes 3 or more) that could easily have been the finish.
Ring Of Honor does NOT have a Japanese style in the slightest. It has a piss-poor rip-off of what these spot monkeys THINK is a Japanese style, i.e. stiffness, headdrops and every other move a finisher.
They completely miss the real point of Japanese wrestling, not to mention that they're too clueless to realise that a good wrestler caters to his audience - and the majority of American fans don't respond to Puro style, genuine or ripped off.
People will usually be quick to say ROH guys have a more Puroresu style since whenever they watch an ROH match they see more wrestling than they do in mainstream promotions like WWE and the like. That focus more on big name guys going out there for a bit and not doing anything too stiff to eachother or not doing anything too wild in the ring.
The only time you'll see Puroresu styles of Jr Heavyweight/Cruiserweight, King's Road/Strong Style in ROH is when they bring in a Japanese worker.
Nigel, Davey Richards, Bryan Danielson, Go Shiozaki, and a few more all have the puro style. And ROH is anything but an ECW ripoff; they focus on wrestling with some hardcore thrown in, not the other way around. The point of ROH is to bring a bunch of styles together, and thats what they do. There will be matches on the same card that a puro fan will love and the next match will feature the briscoes and jack evans that they will hate. too many people piss on it, but it's by far the best weve got
Johnny Saint wrestled an entire tour for Michinoku Pro in 1996 having matches with Yakushiji and MEN'S Teioh. I am almost certain that he wrestled his last match in 2000, not 1996.
Wow, Saint's a league above any wrestler that ever lived, at 65 and debuted 49 years ago. It is commonly thought he retired in 1996, but he admitted in an interview he went on to wrestle in England until '98. When you compare his skills now to other wrestlers of his age or any wrestler of any age, he is a phenom.
That match was in 1996 at the 'These Days' event. He forfeited the Lightweight Title following that match. He continued to wrestle in England on and off until 1998.
This was not his only M-Pro match. He did an entire tour. Highlights of one of his other M-pro matches made it to one of their commercial releases.
Ah, right. I just got it from Raven's "Evenflow DDT", which, I think, sounds better than "The Raven Effect". Now I get where he got the name of the move from.
Every active British promoter should watch this and realise that this is British wrestling at its best.
Every active British wrestler should watch this and realise they should stop trying to be American, Japanese and Mexican and concentrate on making British wrestling unique again and this is what it should be to set it apart from the other different styles of wrestling. This is British wrestling and what made it so damn good and unique back in the days of World of Sport.
That was a pure pleasure to watch. Not only did it bring back fond memories it had the technical splendour thats missing now-a-days.. Keep up the good work LDN

Ah, right - I just took the "Black" part because I liked the name of Chono's step-up yakuza kick, the Shining Black.

Well done to LDN.
