@Nikatsu Its not that its no good, but the contrived way it employes so many ex pro footballers who are not really necessary at all to the story, some are too good so it looks silly and you cant include people like Bobby Moore in the acting scenes cos he cant act ; how can the story account for that lack of involvement by the non acting footballers ; they just look like extras, which they are
Plus as I said earlier, before taking the piss we'd do well to remember that 'soccer' is not an Americanism, the English invented that word. Short for 'association football', the true name for the true football.
Also don't take the piss too much out of the Americans for calling it soccer. The Irish call it soccer as well (what they call 'football' is Gaelic football).
@kisbie Foot-Ball.....Ball kicked with foot......makes sense to me and anyone else who knows what both words mean.....American football would be more accuratley decribed as Handball or HiteachotherwithloadsofpadsonBall
@alski695 There already is a sport called handball. Anyway, rugby's full name is 'rugby football' (league or union) and they use their hands for most of that. I call American football by its other, better name of 'gridiron football'.
@kisbie rugby's original name was.....wait for it.....rugby.....name's can change, and unfortunately rugby has football attatched to it nowadays, makes no sense. So where did the name 'gridiron' name come from?
@alski695 'Gridiron' comes from the markings on the field, said to resemble the grid of an iron stove (apparently). Let's not also forget Aussies Rules football, meaning they're another nation who call our football 'soccer'. And if names can change, why is basketball still called basketball despite the fact they haven't used an actual basket for over a century?
@apetieredet Actually, it's a Hollywood bastardisation of the infamous Death Match that took place between Nazi guards and Soviet POWs who'd played for Dynamo Kiev before the war. It's got a camp novelty value to it though. Where else would you get Pele, Bobby Moore, Ossie Ardiles and the Ipswich team who won the UEFA Cup in an American film?
The movie was based on a true story happened in Ukraine(USSR). Due to the Cold War, Hollywood did not want to glory the Soviets and changed it to France and the Allies.
@coinjoin I'm an American, mate. We call it soccer. My Spanish speaking friends call it fútbol. Are you Australian? I respect Aussie sports. Australian rules football looks like a real mans game.
@Jefgg lol..i know you guys call it soccer..i was only pulling your leg..unfortunatley im Brtitish not Australian...loved this film..i still can remember watching it during easter holidays..they still show it time after time...i think Stallone played an excellent role hence the American way of playing football...if you catch my drift :)..Australian rules is a rough sport a bit like Rugby.. in my house they all follow the Kiwis the All Blacks :)
The trailer (not the movie) sucked. The narrator was so boring. There were so many better scenes they could have used and they could have built up some tension. Wonder why no one saw the film.
This movie is very far fetched, but since I love football, I can tolerate it as good entertainment.
Stallone doesn't pass for a footballer and neither does Michael Caine. And I don't think the Nazis would have a negro prisoner of war with Pele. He would have been shot on the spot.
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I have it on dvd and watch it a couple of times a year. It introduced me to Pele when I was a kid. Love it, great entertaining movie.
i saw this when i was a wee kid on..VHS. Didn't understand why they were playing but I recognized Stallone and pele and didnt care much about the rest.
I like Sly's films but he's no Bobby Moore. He was England's finest captain, a Football legend who led his country to it's greatest triumph, World Cup victory in 1966. I like Sly's films but he's no Bobby Moore. He was England's finest captain, a Football legend who led his country to it's greatest triumph, World Cup victory in 1966. Even Pele called Moore "one of the world's finest defenders and a great sportsman," The world has lost one of it's finest football players and a great gentlemen."
