  • I've watched Jim Gardner since moving to PA in 1999. Simply put, he is the best newscaster in the area.

I will say that I liked the signoffs he did up until the mid 2000s better than the ones today. He used to do a final story, and then sign off by saying: "Have a good night, tonight". Now, it seems as if they do sports and weather until the end, and when the sports people give it back to Gardner, he says a hurried "Goodnight". I liked the old way better.

  • @MegaMitchC i'm telling you...jim gardner is part of the family whether we know it or not....the man is simply the best....we trust him...we listen...and we look up to him...the man is the best for 32 years!

  • I CAN'T IMAGINE LIVING WITHOUT THE SIGNOFF OF JIM GARNDER!! THE GUY IS PHILADELPHIA!!....LONG LIVE JIM!

  • Local news juggernaut. The newscast other local newscasters watch. No match.

  • i want a jim gardner mask.

  • nightline is next on channel 6....action news continues at 6:00am with Monica Malpass, Rick Wiliams and Dave Frankel...now for Dave Roberts, Gary Papa and the Entire Action New Team..I'm Jim Gardner Have a Good Night Tonight

  • I hope Ch. 6 never gets rid of Move Closer to Your World.

  • they will NEVER get rid of Move Closer to Your World. That makes 6ABC the most watched news program in the deleware valley!! I heard that theme since I was born and i rememberd it all my heart!

  • "I'm Ron Burgundy...you stay classy, Philadelphia."

  • god this reminds me of being a kid

    thanks

  • action news.. MCTYW theme.. nightline.. the philly days!

  • I live in New Orleans but grew up in Philly. I'm 32. This song does nothing but bring back memories from my childhood. I hope WPVI NEVER changes this music. Thank you for the post and the memories.

  • I am with you there!!! It actually get me a bit emotional....b/c it makes me think of home...

  • still gives me goose bumps...every time i listen to it...and I STILL LIVE HERE LOL...it's the best..an absolute staple for my entire life...i was born in 1970

  • As long as there are Philadelphians there will be Action News and MCTYW Theme Music...Count on it!

  • csworldwide101, your exactly right. WKBW-TV in Buffalo, WPVI's former sister station used Move Closer to Your World from 1970-2003 and now their newscasts are Terrible.

  • MCTYW is back as the theme on WKBW (as is their Eyewitness News title).

  • I hate when motherfuckers ask questions when they see an old video of a newscasts like "When will they change their music?" or "The music is old, when will they drop it?" I hate when people are like this and don't respect tradition. Because a station have use the same theme for a long time, doesn't mean you would ask questions like that. Many folks here would agree with me on that, since this is the best theme in the Delaware Valley and it still is today. MCTYW is the staple of Channel 6!!!

  • hopefully not.

  • they will never change their theme. MCTYW will stay forever!! Maybe they will modernize the theme. I love MCTYW, at my high school we used it for the morning annnouncements.

  • 6 is the BEST in Philly!!!! I love this closing!!! Thanks for posting.

  • Now you know why WPVI continues to use "Move Closer To Your World" while ABC-owned and operated/affiliated stations use "Eyewitness News"

  • I hope Channel 6 never gets rid of MCTYW.

  • Can I get an amen?

  • I can't imagine them changing it now and to what? that generic Eyewitness News theme that a lot of other ABC stations seem to use? I'd hope not. I don't understand why other stations don't use MCTYW.

  • There would be riots if they ever flat out change the theme to action news, I would protest!

  • They changed it once in the 1990's but everyone hated it so they changed back to the MCTYW theme.

  • They changed it to a DIFFERENT VERSION of it, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Viewers got uber-pissed after a week, so they changed it back to the original 1970's incarnation.

  • @AdamStabelli555 MCTYW?

  • @AdamStabelli555 If they did...they can kiss the ratings good-by to KYW or WCAU. They learned their lesson from 1995 when they changed it to the orchestral version for a week.

  • @AdamStabelli555 same here!!!

  • Oops, I meant AshburnStadium, sorry, fingers moved too quickly.

  • I always enjoy hearing MCTW. There was a time in the 70's where it seems one station in just about every market had it. Don't take my word for it, just follow the advice from AuburnStation. It lists stations all around the U.S. that used it, and also has some opens from some of those stations.

  • There was a time when WPXI in Pittsburgh (NBC) used a variation of the theme, as did WJET, the ABC affiliate in Erie. They both dumped it... but that's OK, because it really is the quintessential Channel 6 theme!

  • WNEP in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre currently uses the "modernized" version of MCTYW that WPXI dropped, and has for roughly 15 years.

Before that, their theme was the actual Move Closer To Your World.

WNEP and WPVI have a few things in common: News themes, respected news departments, and totally dominant local news ratings.

  • Move Closer To Your World my friend take a little bit of time Move Closer to Your world my friend and you'll see.

  • There's a bunch of other lyrics to "Move Closer To Your World".

Go to southernmedia-nmsa*com/audioplayer.php?version=theme&id=202, where you can find the entire full version of MCTYW. Just replace the asterisk with a "dot".

  • Jim owns.

  • Dave Roberts a.k.a. Dave Thomas on WKBW Channel 7 Buffalo. The host of Rocketship 7. Buffalo's local kids show.

  • A/K/A his real name, David Boreanus, Sr.

Yes, he's the dad of David Boreanus, the actor!

  • Oops - spell check here - it's Boreanaz! Dave Roberts' given name is David Thomas Boreanaz.

  • Jim hasn't changed a bit in years...

  • Has he always done the 6 and 11 newscasts as the sole anchor? The morning, noon, and 5:00 newscasts have two anchors don't they?

  • Yes, Jim Gardner (nee Goldman) has done his act solo since coming to WPVI in 1976.

The other weekday newscasts do run with two anchors - Matt O'Donnell and Tamela Edwards at 5 AM; Rick Williams and Sarah Bloomquist at noon; and then Rick with Monica Malpass at 5 PM.

Weekend anchor Rob Jennings runs solo as well, unless he's filling in on a weekday team.

  • Jim Gardner the don of Philly TV!
