my cat does that by her water too. she is trying to get an even standing and trying not to slip tho. i ended up getting her a higher dish and putting a carpet under it.
My family has speculated that perhaps black cats are particularly sensitive. I have had two black cats in my life, and the first one was VERY sensitive, and my current one is, in some ways, even more sensitive. Not much of a sampling, but still…
it's an attempt to cover his food.He is eating it but at the same time a part of his brain is wanting to protect his food from other cats by covering it or hiding it.My guess is this cat's owner has another cat in the house as well.
My cats paw around their food and water dishes. I've read they're either following the instinct to "bury" their food, or marking the area with their scent. But as far as I know that's just using the front paws (?). You cat is very sweet, btw!
I have noticed that cats "dig" at the water bowl when they have kidney problems...I've lost too many older cats to kidney failure not to have seen this behavior, and it scares me. Sorry.
Hahahaha! My kitteh does the front paw digging thing before he drinks his water. I never really understood that. it's as though he is getting comfortable before he lays his fatass down next to the bowl to drink. he is so cute! lol
My cat does this around her food bowl after she's eaten. It's just another way to mark their territory. Like when they rub up on your leg. They aren't saying "I love you" they are saying "I own you."
a few months ago my cat started doing the same thing this cat does with her front feet. I think it might just be a thing they do, there's no underlying problem there.
As the proud mommy of this kitty ( His name is Prince Addington the 3rd, and no, there were none before him, I just like the sound of his name), I can honestly say that 1. it was not a neurological problem 2. He was NOT taken away from his mom too early 3. There was Nothing on the floor.
He is just a kitty that gets super excited about fresh water. I love all the analyzing though! My two favorites were the neurological problem and him being taken away from his mom too early. Classic!
My cat Squishy does almost the same thing but with just her front feet. Then moves the bowl with her head. I've had to buy a heavier bowl so she dosen't tip it over. It's funny to watch her do it!
most of those people are probably just parroting things they have read on the internet, and quite possibly have never even had a cat of their own (due to many people seeming to think that you can force a cat to do something),
@thebarrowsbunch nice name lol.my cats name is sir hidealot because we lost him for 4 days when he took his foodbowl and hid behind the washing machine. at the age of 3weeks.
@thebarrowsbunch wow this is so fucked up :| my cat does the EXACT same thing when he's about to eat and I can't for the life of me understand why. he's also black and also a boy, lol
@thebarrowsbunch Your kitty is super adorible! I personally knew there was nothing wrong with him. A couple of my kitties have unique ways to express when they are excited about fresh water or treats XD
lol... and how do you know this.. i would like proof of your resources.. :) .. you mean you fail because you don't even have proof.. and not all instincts remain.. if it was the case how come not all cats do this? please explain i'm curious
Not true. In the wild many animals instinctively know that digging a small hole in the mud near a water source will allow them to extract the water. This is useful during dry times, and also to avoid crock's near rivers.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah but cats are domesticated, they're not wild animals.. it's like saying all dogs NEED a pack because they come from wolves, in fact not all breeds do.. only one breed of cat carries a wild gene... lol you probably own a cat and i'm sad you don't even know this yourself.. and in the wild.. kittens are never taken away from their mother early to begin with.. ontop of all of this.. i don't know a cat.. i'm disapointed lol. Your cat is not wild so it's not digging at dirt.. it's domecticated
If cats don't have instincts then why did you just explain the kneading instinct in your original post?
Everyone has instincts, even humans. The fight or flight instinct is a big one. Do you think about pulling your hand away from a hot burner or does it happen without thinking? We have maternal instincts too. Instincts are part of being an animal.
Seriously, I hate how I can't watch cute cat videos without some animal cruelty nonsense sprouting up. There are many other LOGICAL reasons for the cat to be doing this. Like, I dunno, a slippery floor?
Just relax, okay? I hate when animals are treated wrong as much as the next person, but going overboard (coughpetacough) won't help anyone.
lol i never said it was animal abuse.. no one was hitting the cat no one is trying to kill the cat and no one is neglecting it either.. i think someone needs to relax a bit to even say "animal abuse" when no one even mentioned it
cats scratch the floor when something is dirty or smelly....even when it's their own butt :D but looks funny ^.^ never so a cat doing it like this one :-)
My cat does something like this too, but only with the front paws.. I think she used to have a feeder tray before we adopted her so she does it out of habit.
Maybe he/she doesn't like the floor and how it's slippery, so they do this funny thing out of a memory of falling on it. Sort of like trying to establish your footing on ice.
