@OropherThranduil We could argue about Best's abilities as a drummer forever, you don't like him and I do, but I'm not out to change your mind on the matter. However, regardless of how good a drummer he was or not no one deserves to be used and disguarded the way he was, if the beatles only saw him as a temporary member then they should have told him that was the arrangement, not make him believe he was working towards a goal as a member of the group.
Pete's style was heavier than Ringos, as to could he have done those songs, we'll never know, and so what if George Martin didn't like pete's drumming, Bert Kaempfert did, so that's a matter of she said, he said.
and only 3 years later the beatles american distributor hired bernard purdie to overdub drums onto all their hamburg sessions songs for a release because they still sucked balls.
you don#t seem to get what the anothology was all about, it was to show how pete was simply not a good drummer, but not even that, it was just to show something from every point of the beatles work, i mean they also included some stuff where stu plays bass, i guess in your opinion stu adn pete were the greatest rythm section ever.
While that title belongs to Ringo and paul.
and well, I listened to petes solo work, and he doesn't write and does not even play the drums alone.
@OropherThranduil Guitar was overdubbed actually and i've heard those recordings played back to back with the versions that were released everywhere else (those overdubs were only done for the us market) and they sound the same, so they removed petes drum track and rather foolishly replaced it with a drummer doing the same. If Best's drumming was as bad as you make out his versions would have not been released in every other country in the world.
Pete wasn't a very good player.I stood behind him and his brother one night and watched them playing drums together in the Cavern.Everytime a drum roll or cymbal smash had to be played Pete stopped playing and his brother did the tricky bits, then Pete would join back in keeping time.I like Pete Best he lives not to far from me and I have met him a few times but it was his playing that let him down.
@themanfromutopia1 complete rubbish. his brother wasn't there with him when he was in the beatles and he was good enough to be there drummer for over 2 years. During that time the beatles were not known as "that band with the shit drummer", so dont make me laugh by suggesting Best can not play drums.
@FabRadio I saw him play at the Cavern in the 1980s not with the Beatles. And his brother did play all the rolls and all the fills. And Pete is a shit drummer make no mistake about it.Just ask George Martin if you dont believe me.Back in the 50s/60s not everyone could afford guitars or drums (just been a problem with the Germans ww2 a few yrs earlier) but if you had them you joined a band regardless of how good you were.Pete was, and is a crap drummer.End of story.X
@themanfromutopia1 No it's not end of stroy, whether you like it or not, you are not the final say on matters. I've heard pete's drumming, like it, and think he is a good drummer.
he looks like a serial killer or sean penn.I don`t know why,but there`s something utterly unsympathetic about him ;? Yet he doesn`t seem agitated orr I don`t know mad about it...

Pete, bless him, was there on the ground floor and can never be relieved of the memories that he must treasure above all. But, we were & are all fortunate enough to have spent the last several decades (those of us who are of that vintage) with an irreplaceable and enormously lovely fellow called "Ringo Starr." Of whom, there is only one of in this world & certainly provided the final catalyst in order for this paricular brand of alchemy to become realised. He is as essential to the mix as any.
let's face it, pete was long on looks, practice space and sex appeal. he was short on drumming talent when it mattered, tho. still...the most laid beatle up to 1962. if i were lennon, i'd fire him, too. ;p

I think his lack of personality is due to the fact that he hasn't been in the public arena like the rest of the Beatles. He sounds just like any ordinary scouse lad who you might meet in a pub on a Saturday night, and who would entertain all with his story's involving his pigeons!!!
@TheMelamia Agree, but I think it was more that he just didn't play to the same level as the others. Even George Martin noticed, so Pete, unfortunately had to go. Maybe alittle more diplomatically, but young, star struck rockers are known for their courtesy all the time.
@1039sflem I feel bad for Pete, he seems like a nice guy and all. Even if he WASN'T, I'd feel bad for him anyway, given what HE must feel he missed out on. I even believe the idea the McCartney was probably jealous, and his dismissal was done heartlessly. Nevertheless, he probably had to go. Even without considering musical ability, just imagine those early press confererences, or the movies, with Pete instead of Ringo. 2:00 to 2:20 of this clip pretty much show why that could never happen.
@2112murphy Maybe not, but he knew the record deal was on the table and was booted out within weeks of their first hit. He spent 2 years with the beatles paying his dues, 2 years he could have spent doing something else.
@2112murphy No, it makes as much sense as killing yourself because you lost the winning lottery ticket maybe.. but not just because "someone else" won it.
@beatlesgirl978 Well, Pete's younger brother Roag was the love child of his mother Mona and the Beatles' road manager and personal assistant (and later head of Apple Corps) Neil Aspinall; so I'm sure that created conflicting feelings in him, too.
you can't help but feel bad for this guy :( he tried to commit suicide during the peak of Beatlemania before his mother and sister talked him out of it
From memory one of the main reasons he was dropped was he was not a very good drummer. Would be interesting to see him behind a drum kit beating out one of the early Beatles covers
3:05 "drummer was a guy called Sonny Moore" Skrillex =O
4:24 "where are we going guys? to the top" I think george martin also mentioned that saying while the beatles recorded the white album to get them motivated etc. but the saying was longer
John: "When the Beatles were depressed-thinking the group was going nowhere, and this is a shitty deal, and we're in a shitty dressing room-I'd say, 'Where are we going, fellas?' And they'd go, 'To the top, Johnny!' And I'd say, 'Where's that fellas?' and they'd say, 'To the toppermost of the poppermost!' and I'd say, 'Right!' Then we'd all sort of cheer up."
@OropherThranduil ...and the fact that Lennon told the story like THAT and Pete Best told the story the way he did is at least part of the reason why Lennon endured, and Pete did not, sadly.
@OropherThranduil He played on several songs written by lennon and mccartney at the decca sessions and did fine. anyone would think ringo made the beatles the way some carry on...
I know their decca audition, i have their earliest bbc recordings with pete, and they're all inferior to everything ringo had his hands in.
and just because you like it, well, george martin didn't like it, they needed some real drummer for what they wanted to do.
he just hadn't the beat in his blood.
and please, don#t tell me you think best could have done Rain, Tommorow never knows, Strawberry Fields forever, Ticket to Ride, Something, helter Skelter.
And what about Ringos imaginative fill work, you know, the one that is praised by Phil Collins lime this:
Starr is vastly underrated. The drum fills on the song "A Day in the Life" are very complex things. You could take a great drummer today and say, 'I want it like that.' He wouldn't know what to do.
He also was a human metronome, you know Elvis first drummer, D J Fontana, after playing with Ringo said that about him.
He also was perfect, really, you know that according to Mark Lewisohn, there were fewer than a dozen occasions in The Beatles' eight-year recording career where session "breakdowns" were caused by Starr making a mistake.
i don#t think fucking Bonham had such a perfect score.
@platecrumb yeah letterman is a sly type, he pretends to be warm and friendly and waits for you to bring your guard down after hes gained your trust, then he hurts you.
Pete you may have been with the Beatles for like 2 years but Ringo have been with them for like 49 years. face it dude you are writing books making movies and telling stories about the Beatles but you didn't go through the soul shattering journey that Ringo went with Paul George and John. so his basically milking what could have been.
People are kicked out of bands every day, his bad luck it was such a biggie! Anyway he's made a bit of cash out of his anecdotes so not all bad. People step in front of buses every day, more cost involved there - context people!
@payoutstructure Context? How about the depression he went on to suffer from and the fact he almost killed himself. Yes, there are "worse things" in the world, but everytime you have a problem in life do you say "la de da could be worse????" Of course not, no one does!
A good drummer but a bit shy but not everybodys extrovert, funny or opinated as the other Beatles were. They changed the world with their music but they paid a personal price for it, and with Lenon it was a tragic one. I don't think Bete would of been jealous of all the drugs and infighting that happened at the end of the Beatles.
Since Ringo kept out of all that stuff, who knows, after the breakup he was the only one everybody still liked, lennon also never talked shit to ringo, he respected ringos opinion, ringo also was i tihkn the only one who said to him if he really loves yoko it's okay with him.
if u were him each day would be torturelol why r the audience laughing? i feel really bad for him. horrible how some people feel the need to take their own insecurities out on others by being deliberately nasty. as others have said, he knws the beatles better than anyone else ever will.
It must suck to be pete best. Getting kicked out of the beatles to learn they're going to be the best band ever made and have BILLIONS of fans for 40 years and Billions of more in the century!!...oh well. lol
@Filip3anut Yes that's true up to point but they other Beatles paid a heavy personal price for enormous fame and wealth. Mind you Lenin, George and Ringo were sued for their billions by Paul when they broke up in 1970. Then there was British tax man who in the 1960s, helped themselves generously to the Beatles fortune. I don't think if Pete had stayed in the group he would have survived with all the drugs and the madness that engulfed the band as the 1960s progressed.
He is one of very few ...including us MILLIONS ...who WAS and WILL be forever more- a "beatle" and has intimate knowledge of them as people. WE will NEVER have that .
He is also legit in as much as he has finally been included on official product -making him bona fide part of the beatles legend -without him they may never have gotten "the sea legs' it takes to tough it out -he was a good drummer who was in an unfortunate situation ...i play drums well -so i know of what i am talking
@gregboyds Why only yesterday ...the UN called me up and asked me what to do about libya and palestine -and i am having dinner with richard dawkins and edward de bono ....then later that night ,i'm jamming with clapton ...can i help it if i know everything ?
S*** happens. Nothing to freak over. Met Best a couple times and he's a modest, sweet man who has nothing bad to say. He's incredibly humble and a beautiful character. So...no one should pity him or dislike him because of something that he couldn't much help happening.
@446646 He was their drummer for over two years and played almost 1,000 gigs. Hows that not a "long time". In terms of "on stage" hours, he drummed more than Ringo! So no, anyone who says he was a drummer for a long time is not stupid, they are using common sense.
@446646 He "didn't play that long", if you had been their drummer for 2 years you might view that somewhat differently. I hate it when people act like he was in the band for five minutes. He wasn't. And they would have never got rid of him had fame not come at that time, because Ringo Starr would have never joint them!
@weirdcitykid Best has never been given a real reason, and many (if not all) of the reasons that have been suggested have been disproved. He was their drummer for over 2 years and was arguably the most popular member of the group with the female fans when they were playing the clubs. He certainly has a stronger personality than Ringo Starr.
I think maybe they were a bit jealous of him. It's normal human behaviour to be a bit jealous of the guy that attracts all the girls - I mean we all know someone like that and yeah - I sometimes forget to invite that friend to parties etc. lol.
While barely mentioning Pete Best, Geoff Emerick in his book gives a very good perspective of how things went between the members of the band. Possibly the most revealing point is that he never even shared a cup of tea with them, even though he was part of almost every session, from their initial test to the last Abbey Road session. The more you read about the Beatles, the more you realize they all had major personal problems and weird behaviors. Pete Best was quite simply a victim of that.
Dear Pete Best: You dear boy were the real rebel, the ultimate cool character and John knew it too. "Did that swift eclipse tourture you ? A star at 18, then suddenly gone. Down to a few lines in a faded anual, but I remember you...I remember you." Love you always for being yourself....Molly
I can't imagine what Pete Best went through during the Beatles' peak period of success. I mean, he couldn't escape the songs playing everywhere, taunting him, reminding him how cruel life could be. Unless he became a religious nut, he must had superhuman resillience to make it through those decades.
@xingsheng1 Not really, he bought every beatles record! Some people know that life has to go on, he had 2 choices : go on or stay stuck in the past... he decided to go on!
Pete Best and his mother really formed the Beatles if you think about it. Considering they were not reconized besides in their home town of Liverpool in England. until performing in Germany is when people actually started seeing their talent from all over the world. As we all know Mona invited them to perform in her night club. From what I've heard his looks were also very different from the other 3 so they felt he really didn't fit too well for the forming of the Beatles.
George Martin didn't want to sack Best, because although he thought he was a shit drummer, he knew that his good looks could make the Beatles VERY marketable to teenage girls. The other 3 Beatles however were adamant on sacking him, because they were jealous of him getting most of the girls and being more attractive than them (Paul especially), so he was replaced with Ringo was a shitty drummer and unattractive. Go figure.
@cabrerajohnny15 If that's true, then how come pete's drumming skills carried a whole band (the all stars) who were voted 2nd most popular band in liverpool in 1963 due to the fact pete best was their drummer. ringo never did that. how come on the only video tape of the beatles playing the cavern (in 1962) the audience are shouting "we want pete best"? ringo would have probably been worse off than pete best now had he not got the job in the beatles!
@FabFM ok you may have that point but yet again i dont thin the Beatles would have got any shity drummer of the street they saw that Ringo had at least some tallent and if i recall the Beatles got Ringo since he was the best brummer in Liverpool
@cabrerajohnny15 If Ringo was the best drummer in Liverpool then how come merseybeat magazine always ranked Best higher? Pete Best and Johnny Hutchinson (the latter of whom some claimed the Beatles asked to replace before they asked Ringo) were always regarded higher than Ringo. Don't rely on Beatles publications printed after 1962 to give you all the facts, read something printed at the time!
@FabFM well you may have those points but in my opinion The Beatles were badass withput Pete Best and come on some cool songs like Yellow Submarine Octopusus Garden wouldnt exist without Ringo
@cabrerajohnny15 Well of course it wouldn't have sounded the same, that's obvious. I never said it wouldn't. I'm not slagging off Ringo anyway, but I think it's sad people have to slag off Pete Best.
@cabrerajohnny15 Ringo is not really under-rated, he is given a lot of credit, unlike Best who many label as a "crap drummer" just because they don't like the fact he isn't one of the known Beatles, not because of his drumming.
@alienhuman - It's more accurate to say that people in general follow certain fashion and style trends during different eras, and in the 1980's, the so-called "porn stars" were no exception. They looked like everyone else; everyone else didn't look like them.
@jias188 Well you got find some work after the Beatles and that does pay you know a lot pennies. I mean he couldn't have been a lawer or doctor that would found a cure for cancer.
Weather Ringo was better fit or not, you got to feel for Pete having just missed the best show on Earth during the last century.

And they'd go, 'To the top, Johnny!' And I'd say, 'Where's that fellas?' and they'd say, 'To the toppermost of the poppermost!' and I'd say, 'Right!' Then we'd all sort of cheer up."

@OropherThranduil ...and the fact that Lennon told the story like THAT and Pete Best told the story the way he did is at least part of the reason why Lennon endured, and Pete did not, sadly.

pete (thankfully) didn't endure because his durmming sucked.

@OropherThranduil I have listened to what he played on - the polydor and decca sessions - so lets talk - Best can play drums!

@FabRadio
Pete was allright for covering 50s rock songs.
But on the Beatles selfwritten stuff he would've been lost as early as 63.
OropherThranduil 1 week ago
@OropherThranduil He played on several songs written by lennon and mccartney at the decca sessions and did fine. anyone would think ringo made the beatles the way some carry on...
FabRadio 1 week ago
@FabRadio
OropherThranduil 1 week ago
@FabRadio
OropherThranduil 1 week ago
@FabRadio
He also was perfect, really, you know that according to Mark Lewisohn, there were fewer than a dozen occasions in The Beatles' eight-year recording career where session "breakdowns" were caused by Starr making a mistake.
i don#t think fucking Bonham had such a perfect score.
OropherThranduil 1 week ago
@OropherThranduil I never said Starr was a bad drummer, just that Best was a good one.

FabFM 4 months ago
A good drummer but a bit shy but not everybodys extrovert, funny or opinated as the other Beatles were. They changed the world with their music but they paid a personal price for it, and with Lenon it was a tragic one. I don't think Bete would of been jealous of all the drugs and infighting that happened at the end of the Beatles.
Professor6871 8 months ago
@Professor6871
Since Ringo kept out of all that stuff, who knows, after the breakup he was the only one everybody still liked, lennon also never talked shit to ringo, he respected ringos opinion, ringo also was i tihkn the only one who said to him if he really loves yoko it's okay with him.

Filip3anut 9 months ago 2

S*** happens. Nothing to freak over. Met Best a couple times and he's a modest, sweet man who has nothing bad to say. He's incredibly humble and a beautiful character. So...no one should pity him or dislike him because of something that he couldn't much help happening.
mirakay83 10 months ago
How can someone say Pete best is the best drummer? is he didn't even play that long, you guys are just too fucking stupid to realize that.
446646 10 months ago
@446646 He was their drummer for over two years and played almost 1,000 gigs. Hows that not a "long time". In terms of "on stage" hours, he drummed more than Ringo! So no, anyone who says he was a drummer for a long time is not stupid, they are using common sense.
FabFM 10 months ago
@446646 He "didn't play that long", if you had been their drummer for 2 years you might view that somewhat differently. I hate it when people act like he was in the band for five minutes. He wasn't. And they would have never got rid of him had fame not come at that time, because Ringo Starr would have never joint them!
FabFM 10 months ago

I never heard of this guy...what's the deal why they kick him out?
weirdcitykid 10 months ago
@weirdcitykid Best has never been given a real reason, and many (if not all) of the reasons that have been suggested have been disproved. He was their drummer for over 2 years and was arguably the most popular member of the group with the female fans when they were playing the clubs. He certainly has a stronger personality than Ringo Starr.
FabFM 10 months ago
@FabFM
I think maybe they were a bit jealous of him. It's normal human behaviour to be a bit jealous of the guy that attracts all the girls - I mean we all know someone like that and yeah - I sometimes forget to invite that friend to parties etc. lol.

pauljhongeorgefan 10 months ago
While barely mentioning Pete Best, Geoff Emerick in his book gives a very good perspective of how things went between the members of the band. Possibly the most revealing point is that he never even shared a cup of tea with them, even though he was part of almost every session, from their initial test to the last Abbey Road session. The more you read about the Beatles, the more you realize they all had major personal problems and weird behaviors. Pete Best was quite simply a victim of that.
lanhet 11 months ago
ringo is so much better,i dont know about drumming but i am talking about the image of the group
MyDreamside 11 months ago
Dear Pete Best: You dear boy were the real rebel, the ultimate cool character and John knew it too. "Did that swift eclipse tourture you ? A star at 18, then suddenly gone. Down to a few lines in a faded anual, but I remember you...I remember you." Love you always for being yourself....Molly
mollymaemorrissey 11 months ago
I can't imagine what Pete Best went through during the Beatles' peak period of success. I mean, he couldn't escape the songs playing everywhere, taunting him, reminding him how cruel life could be. Unless he became a religious nut, he must had superhuman resillience to make it through those decades.
xingsheng1 11 months ago
@xingsheng1 Not really, he bought every beatles record! Some people know that life has to go on, he had 2 choices : go on or stay stuck in the past... he decided to go on!
FabFM 11 months ago
At least he's not pulling a "Dave Mustaine" and bitching about it.
BrettDixonMusic 1 year ago
Pete Best and his mother really formed the Beatles if you think about it. Considering they were not reconized besides in their home town of Liverpool in England. until performing in Germany is when people actually started seeing their talent from all over the world. As we all know Mona invited them to perform in her night club. From what I've heard his looks were also very different from the other 3 so they felt he really didn't fit too well for the forming of the Beatles.
TheSnapz1 1 year ago
George Martin didn't want to sack Best, because although he thought he was a shit drummer, he knew that his good looks could make the Beatles VERY marketable to teenage girls. The other 3 Beatles however were adamant on sacking him, because they were jealous of him getting most of the girls and being more attractive than them (Paul especially), so he was replaced with Ringo was a shitty drummer and unattractive. Go figure.
Anon371 1 year ago
I think it's nice that even though Ringo became more famous, Pete had a nice attitude about it, and he didn't diss him or anything in this interview.
lukefonfabre26 1 year ago
God why does every one say pete was better than Ringo if you don't know Ringo wad the best drummer in Liverpool at the time not Pete
cabrerajohnny15 1 year ago 4
@cabrerajohnny15 If that's true, then how come pete's drumming skills carried a whole band (the all stars) who were voted 2nd most popular band in liverpool in 1963 due to the fact pete best was their drummer. ringo never did that. how come on the only video tape of the beatles playing the cavern (in 1962) the audience are shouting "we want pete best"? ringo would have probably been worse off than pete best now had he not got the job in the beatles!
FabFM 11 months ago
@FabFM ok you may have that point but yet again i dont thin the Beatles would have got any shity drummer of the street they saw that Ringo had at least some tallent and if i recall the Beatles got Ringo since he was the best brummer in Liverpool
cabrerajohnny15 11 months ago
@cabrerajohnny15 If Ringo was the best drummer in Liverpool then how come merseybeat magazine always ranked Best higher? Pete Best and Johnny Hutchinson (the latter of whom some claimed the Beatles asked to replace before they asked Ringo) were always regarded higher than Ringo. Don't rely on Beatles publications printed after 1962 to give you all the facts, read something printed at the time!
FabFM 11 months ago
@FabFM so why didnt they replace pete with Johnny Hutchinson
cabrerajohnny15 11 months ago
@cabrerajohnny15 Because Hutchinson was good friends with Pete Best and didn't rate the other three Beatles that highly!
FabFM 11 months ago
@FabFM well you may have those points but in my opinion The Beatles were badass withput Pete Best and come on some cool songs like Yellow Submarine Octopusus Garden wouldnt exist without Ringo
cabrerajohnny15 10 months ago
@cabrerajohnny15 "Yellow Submarine" would have existed without Ringo Starr, because it was written by Paul McCartney!
FabFM 10 months ago
@FabFM i Konow that Paul McCartney wrote it but what I tried to tell you is that it wouldnt have sounded the same (sry should have been more clear)
cabrerajohnny15 10 months ago
@cabrerajohnny15 Well of course it wouldn't have sounded the same, that's obvious. I never said it wouldn't. I'm not slagging off Ringo anyway, but I think it's sad people have to slag off Pete Best.
FabFM 10 months ago
@FabFM i respect the guy but i feel its not fair that Ringo is always underrated
cabrerajohnny15 10 months ago
@cabrerajohnny15 Ringo is not really under-rated, he is given a lot of credit, unlike Best who many label as a "crap drummer" just because they don't like the fact he isn't one of the known Beatles, not because of his drumming.
