I'm not quite taken with the aria, but Cecilia sings wonderfully and yes, that high note is fantastic!

was the high E6 written into the music or was it part of Bartoli's cadenza?

Written, she actually sings this with period instruments in this recording, so in modern pitch is Eb6, but when she has sang it live with modern instruments she sings the E6! as far as I know neither Sutherland nor Callas sang the E6 , their voices were really too big too barely touch it.

Actually Sutherland recalls in an interview that Richard tricked her into singing higher by starting her vocalisation at a different note (since Sutherland does not have perfect pitch). Sutherland can sing E (even touch an F) but rarely does so, I doubt there are more than a handful or recordings available of her E, unlike her Eb which I'd say there are more than 3 dozen recordings available.

Oh yes, Sutherland had a high F#, what I mean is that usually when she got up to those high notes (usually E being the highest) it was long held notes, not fast 16h notes.

This is so wonderful, this is one of my favorite Cecilia arias. She sings it with an incredible ease and she reaches the highest notes with a wonderful clearness. By the way, the whole opera is wonderful to listen to, very recommendable!
