I haven't watched this piece of video since the first time I saw it live and yet it's always stayed with me since I first saw it. It just seemed like a very special moment on that occasion when time stood still and watched as well, ultimately because that Eva Cassidy song is so incredible and heart-wrenching but the skating did well to match it and make it a whole.
I don't remember who won in 2002, I don't really remember the circumstances, but I remember THIS skate. I was familiar with Eva Cassidy's incredible version before I watched this skate, and when the first strains played, I knew we were in for something very special. I DO remember you, Michelle, every time I hear this song. I remember the most ideal pairing of artistry ever to grace the ice--your emotional, feelings-laid-bare skating, with Eva's soulful and intimate rendition.
Beautiful and classic, we miss you dearly Michelle, no one has come close since. I'll take a skater who has the love and passion for the sport to stick it out even when it's tough, than a flash in the pan any day, or someone who takes the money/gold medal and runs...grace and class defined. I watch this every so often to remind me what is best about skating.
As much as I LOVE this music, she just doesn't do it for me as a skater. I just don't get the same emotion watching her. A great talent; just not for me.
PLUS: One thing Kwan will ALWAYS have over Tara and Sasha is class. I love T and S as skaters, but what are they doing now? They both, to me, seem like reality-star stereotypes, bouncing from "career" to "career" (failed acting, embarrassing shows,etc) and it's kind of sad honestly. Kwan: Masters Degree, Public Diplomat, Recent Commencement Speaker (honorary Doctorate). Can you see Tara being asked to speak at a University ;) That's what legacy and class are all about my friend.
@getrealandsee Therefore, since greatness has many definitions. I think Michelle Kwan fits the bill and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. If you need a definition then here's one. "Greatness" Definition: the property possessed by something or someone of outstanding importance. The property Michelle Kwan posseses is passion, skill, and strength in her art, and her "outstanding importance" is to the many fans whom she has inspired all over the world.
@getrealandsee Everyone is entitled to their opinion and some people tend to take things too personally on a matter that isn't even their own. However, you should know that a person's greatness isn't measured by gold medals or things they have won, but by the impact and legacy they left behind them. There might have been so many elite artists, singers, actors, gymnasts, etc who probally won awards for their performances and were NEVER were remembered because they had no impact on the world.

The sad fact is that, except for insiders and hardcore fans, figure skating is a sport that really only matters at the Olympics. And in sports that really only matter at the Olympics, you’re judged by how you do at the Olympics. Figure-skating people will put her in their Hall of Fame and forever think of her as a member of the pantheon. But for the rest of us, she had two chances to prove her greatness and she didn’t answer the bell.

Ask an average, hardcore football/basketball fan who never watches figures skating who Sarah Hughes or Tara Lipinski is... they likely won't know. But they WILL know Michelle Kwan, who, to this day, is synonymous with figure skating in the US. Whenever there is an article about skating in mainstream news, Kwan is mentioned as the last of the US superstars of the sport.

What’s really sad is that for all the comforting talk that Kwan will be remembered as one of the greatest skaters of all time despite never having won Olympic gold, she won’t be remembered as one of the greatest skaters of all time because she never won Olympic gold.

In 1994 Michelle Kwan was treated to a trip to Norway...got to experience the Olympics...had an opportunity that no one before her had and no one after her. Oh Scott...Kwan didn't even win the bronze. That was Sasha's who was undermarked against Kwan in both the short and long. i dont believe some of you people. of course these girls want to be the best on their field, its what competition is all about. but the way your're trashing some of them is just wrong. not everyone will agree on who deserved the metals. even the judges will disagree. i liked all the routines, mistakes or not.

An emotion on the ice rarely scene...what character and love she exudes...I never cared she won....It kept her competing and giving us such memorable performances and teaching us all that success comes in many packages...No matter what hateful things people say about her on here....she has millions more who lover her and I am proud to be one of her fans....and to honest ALL the talented figure skaters who have shared their gifts with us. What a beautiful sport!
Sarah instantly became America’s sweetheart because of the charm, sweetness, unaffected naturalness and grace that she displayed along with her enormous talent. She further endeared herself to Americans when, after winning her gold medal, she dedicated her exhibition skate to the victims of the World Trade Center attack on 9/11

I'm a big Kwan fan, but Sarah Hughes definitely deserved the gold medal that night. It was just her moment. But Kwan still skated a magnificent Exhibition program..and how much is this a testament to her heart; with this only being an Ex program yet for it to be one of the most memorable in history? This was Michelle..even with all the accolades, she won people over with her passion and fantastic programs.
UGHHH break out the pepto. It looks like Kwan is about to double over with all those pained facial expressions. Someone took the gold she thought she was entitled to and Kwan is now weeping away. Haters will always be haters. That's their job. A story will not be complete without a villain. So Michelle's fans (like me) let the hater do her job--we can only hope she gets actually PAID for it. It seems that as long as she skates "with her heart" judges will automatically place her first at the expense of real athletes who literally break their backs to push themselves and this sport to be the best they could be. Fortunately for the sport, Sarah Hughes restored some luster with her dazzling, nothing-to-lose, gold medal performance on the last day of figure skating competition.
Namely, that judging results are predetermined by reputation and that only major spills can alter the outcome. That if Kwan fell down three times, she would still get at least a bronze medal because of her stature in the sport.
Kwan rarely received the highest technical mark in competitions. She was often outscored in many meets, but the rule is that the ARTISTIC mark was the tiebreaker in those days, and she was BY FAR the most interpretive skater of her day, if not of all time, which is why she was very often a winner over someone who could do a triple/triple but bore you to tears or just be graceful. Michelle was much more than that...she was never "given" wins, which is why she has a bronze/silver Olympic medals.

I don't remember who won in 2002, I don't really remember the circumstances, but I remember THIS skate. I was familiar with Eva Cassidy's incredible version before I watched this skate, and when the first strains played, I knew we were in for something very special. I DO remember you, Michelle, every time I hear this song. I remember the most ideal pairing of artistry ever to grace the ice--your emotional, feelings-laid-bare skating, with Eva's soulful and intimate rendition.

PLUS: One thing Kwan will ALWAYS have over Tara and Sasha is class. I love T and S as skaters, but what are they doing now? They both, to me, seem like reality-star stereotypes, bouncing from "career" to "career" (failed acting, embarrassing shows,etc) and it's kind of sad honestly. The sad fact is that, except for insiders and hardcore fans, figure skating is a sport that really only matters at the Olympics. And in sports that really only matter at the Olympics, you’re judged by how you do at the Olympics. Figure-skating people will put her in their Hall of Fame and forever think of her as a member of the pantheon. But for the rest of us, she had two chances to prove her greatness and she didn’t answer the bell.

Ask an average, hardcore football/basketball fan who never watches figures skating who Sarah Hughes or Tara Lipinski is... they likely won't know. But they WILL know Michelle Kwan, who, to this day, is synonymous with figure skating in the US. Whenever there is an article about skating in mainstream news, Kwan is mentioned as the last of the US superstars of the sport.

However, due to her lack of intelligence, she didn't anticipate anyone asking where Sarah and Tara finished on that list lol! They aren't even on it! Oh Scott...Kwan didn't even win the bronze. That was Sasha's who was undermarked against Kwan in both the short and long. Pity points for screwing up again gave Kwan another shiny token to take home...never really was a champion and has zilch integrity...but oh well...it is delightful to see the look of pain and shock that the gold wasn't going to be outright handed to her here. She apparently thought it was going to be...gold costume, gold music, puked short, simple long, coachless...NO RESPECT

U.S. Figure Skating had set up an “NCAA tournament-style bracket with 64 of the greatest skaters and duos in the history of the sport.” The skaters were seeded according to on-ice accomplishments, historical significance, and public perception.

Too funny...now Tara is the one upsetting the crazed Kwan defenders. Of course she is being called ugly just as she was when she won...of course she is being ridiculed for her reaction to her win (but Kwan can thumbs down, boo, wrinkle her nose). Holy Moly...who's next...can't possibly be that not everyone is blind to the corruption and resents the favortism. Tara wouldn't qualify there. She won everything and moved on. And Tara just happened to cream Kwan 4 of their last 6 meetings including Nats, Worlds, AND the Olympics so you betcha Shelly was breathing a HUGE sigh of relief to know that she can bungle through worlds and still be handed the title. An emotion on the ice rarely scene...what character and love she exudes...I never cared she won....It kept her competing and giving us such memorable performances and teaching us all that success comes in many packages...No matter what hateful things people say about her on here....she has millions more who lover her and I am proud to be one of her fans....and to honest ALL the talented figure skaters who have shared their gifts with us. What a beautiful sport!

I'm a big Kwan fan, but Sarah Hughes definitely deserved the gold medal that night. It was just her moment. But Kwan still skated a magnificent Exhibition program..and how much is this a testament to her heart; with this only being an Ex program yet for it to be one of the most memorable in history? This was Michelle..even with all the accolades, she won people over with her passion and fantastic programs.

She elevated skating's credibility as a performance art while maintaining its athletisism. 9 national titles and 5 world championships weren't just happenstance. That's athletic longevity and consistency that nobody has matched. Would love to say the same for Tara, Sarah, and Sasha, but can't. Amazing skaters that either diappeared or couldn't do two consistent performances in a row.

It seems that as long as she skates "with her heart" judges will automatically place her first at the expense of real athletes who literally break their backs to push themselves and this sport to be the best they could be. @djwertheimer though getrealandsee writes comments in an "in your face" kind of way, it really is true that Michelle diminished skating's credibility as a sport. How come there is so much venom describing Tara and Sarah when talking about Michelle? Yes, she has beautiful moves, but truth is that Tara and Sarah EARNED their golds through determination, gutsy, and athletic performances. And not by reputation and popularity. This is first and foremost a sport, NOT a beauty pageant.

@allenglandlawns I agree that Sarah and Tara earned their gold medals...no question there. @getrealandsee has just a little too much bitterness when it comes to Michelle however. Artistry is a HUGE part of figure skating and Michelle had marvelous edges which both Tara and Sarah lacked. If compulsory figures were brought back...it woud have really shown Kwan's all-around gifts for skating.

@pwinks84 Yes! You are so right. Michelle is a throwback to the days when this sport favored clean edging and artistry. She was simply living in the wrong era. Today, its athletes are performing powerful jumps, fast spins, and complicated steps. She didn't push the sport in that direction as Tara and Sarah did.

djwertheimer OMG seriously? Did Kwan's PR team pay you to write this? Sacred? Gratitude? Read up on other skaters who did contribute and spoke like competitors not spouting 'let my heart sing' crap .Kwan really damaged figure skating's credibility and as far as sacred...oh please!

Namely, that judging results are predetermined by reputation and that only major spills can alter the outcome. That if Kwan fell down three times, she would still get at least a bronze medal because of her stature in the sport.

Kwan rarely received the highest technical mark in competitions. She was often outscored in many meets, but the rule is that the ARTISTIC mark was the tiebreaker in those days, and she was BY FAR the most interpretive skater of her day, if not of all time, which is why she was very often a winner over someone who could do a triple/triple but bore you to tears or just be graceful. Michelle was much more than that...she was never "given" wins, which is why she has a bronze/silver Olympic medals.

@pwinks84 That Bronze belongs to Sasha and kwan most assuredly was given wins, propped up, favored, but even at that think OLYMPICS. The BEST skaters earn their scores, up the ante, and actually realize that this is a competition...not a given. Let her have her powder puff medals...let her boast and brag (humbly of course) but the fact remains she is not the best!! And that little trick in 2006 cost her a lot of respect but cost FS so much credibilty...but not to worry..kwan has 'no regrets'

@getrealandsee What the fuck is your problem! I don't mind that not every is a fan of Michelle, but when you attack her personally just proves your bitterness and immaturity. Sasha should have went back to skating 101 and learn to use her edges correctly instead of relying on her flexibility masked as artistry. FYI, Michelle did elevate skating into high art. With Frank and Lori on her team they created many masterpieces, so go wallow on your bitterness.

@citizenlen Oh my goodness. Thank you so very much for allowing that not everyone adores Kwan. She did so much damage to the credibility of figure skating as a sport that it is still recovering. Speaking of 'masks' Kwan masked her lack of athleticism and drive with her 'artistry' ..arm waving, jiggling, and facial grimaces. She is so full of herself that she considered the Gold hers just for deigning to grace the arena with her presence. I am not bitter, btw....Kwan isn't worth it:):)
