@narutoo225 Get used to it that musicians with Irish, or Scottish origins usually sing about places (, the country, the land, a town, a river, etc.) as if they were singing about/for their beloved one. Celtic people have a huge heart for their homeland.
I´m not a scot. But I love this land for years and I´m sooooo happy I can go back this year. But there is so much to see, and so many to meet... how could I choose?
Scotland... just everything and everything to love.
@DoomsdayDevice9mm your comment speaks for itself. long time ago I had a love affair with a scottish girl and since then I know what it means to be scottish.
Sorry to say it Norway although nice cant touch Scotland, I spent 3 months in Norway with 3 commando Brigade Royal Marines in the winter of 2006 on Arctic Warfare Training and I agree its nice but as I said not as nice as Scotland
Maybe silly of me to compare - both wonderful. Norway has Fjords etc and more colourful buildings. Love Scotttish highlands and lochs, but the grey stone or white cottages with grey roofs could do with some Norwegian colour at times. But Scotland is less cold and wet than Norway! Scandinavian social, health & education systems the most enlightened in the world. But that's not scenery.
Hi mate, i can't actually comment on Finland because i have never seen it :(
But i have met a few Finnish folk and they have always been very nice people and you can usually say the same for their country as a nice country usually makes nice people :) :P
pop songs aren't about how many chords you can play for fucks sake. and obviously this song is based on a I IV V progression regardless of who sings it. So if you think that Amy Mcdonald lacks guitar skill it's the same as saying that frankie miller does because he wrote it. Anyway, this song is far more than the music that surrounds it.
LOL...it's you that needs to do a search my friend. Frankie Miller did NOT write or first perform this song, Dougie McLean did.
If you're going to be scornful of people who disagree with you it always best to get your basic facts straight first or you end up looking like a moron.
I agree with you about Amy McDonald's version of this song though, I don't like it much at all. My personal favourite is Paolo Nutini's version
Kierannightstalker is right, only scots can really understand and feel this song, i think its not a bad version but no matter who covers it it will put a lump in the throat, wen i moved away from bonnie bonnie alba i thought of this song now and again and it really does sum up wat it is to be scottish, although in reality we are pretty much pish at everything our love and passion will never falter..
For me, this song epitomises Scotland. I love it, I miss it, I will always be Scots. Thank you Dougie Maclean for putting into words what it means to be Scots. Unless you're from this great country, you'll never truly understand the feelings this song conjures up (no matter who sings it!) but listen to it and you'll be a part of it...and we'll welcome you with open arms to the friendliest country in the world. Failte!
It's not the song it's just that the rendition is not the best and to tell the truth there are better songs around that espouse our nation much better than this
I have not been looking at the CW version for their "choreography and posing". They just have nice voices and sing some songs better.
I'm not saying Amy sings terrible - this song just isn't made for her. It would surely be the same should she try to sing "We Don't Need Another Hero" or "My Life Would Suck Without You". Sometimes it is better to stick with the songs that your voice supports. There is no voice on earth made to sing every song there is and sound equally good and fitting at each.
migga86 - Point taken about the voices/songs, and I respect your opinion on CW even though I strongly disagree with it. But, as a Scot, I just feel that this rendition really expresses the theme of the song, whereas, the visual distraction of CW's "performance" detracts from it.
Macdonald is not that unusual of spelling; that is my last name and it is spelled with a small "d". I have seen it both ways on her official site/merchandise, but most often as all one word. Wikipedia is not a reliable source.

@axe8564 Caledonia, essentially, means Scotland. It's a Latin name that the Romas gave to the land where Scotland is today. Hope that helps! :)

Two things;
1) Frankie Miller did not write this song
2) Dougie McLean, who did write it, used Minors when he played it as does every other guitar player who has any basic skill at all.

Her version isn't quite as good as the one performed by Celtic Woman. You should listen to their version.
If Amy sang that song their way, I guess it would have made the top 10.

I think you meant to write it's Macdonald not McDonald or MacDonald. Her website lists it as MacDonald -- so does Wikipedia.
"Son of donald", rather than "Son of Donald" would be an unusual spelling.
