Russia is a large country with many culturally different peoples. It has every thing from snow and ice in Siberia to cotton fields in it warmer climate. Huge farming areas for grain and other plant growth to a wealth of oil. It heavy industry is amazing and wide spread. If your and American reading this and cant see anything good about Russia i suggest you open some non american books and read or view something that has not been verbal diarrhea from Amercian writers narrow propogated views.

I,m a Canadian and i believe that Russians are nothing more than human beings that are building up there weapons to stay on top of possible threats as we do here in the west. Yes we are culturally different but they bleed and die in war as we do and there families hurt for there loss as we do. In the end were are all the same.

@flyguy4fun good post, flyguy, but I'd say more - Russians and Canadians are not different culturally as you may think - look around in Canada and you'll see there a lot of immigrants who are REALLY different culturally as compared to Canadians, then Russians are - you will never tell a Russian Canadian or Ukrainian Canadian from yourselve as Russians easily accept Canadian values, that is not so about many people from other countries (especially moslem) who want to impose their rules on you.

And may I ask where did you pull this information out from? russian's spending is $50bn for 2009. Where the crap did you pull 800$bl peace time and $1.1 trillion? This does not account for the fact that many of its defense contractors have been in disarray. Even the MIG cooperation is facing bankcruptcy right now. And if not for Boeing's help, similar fate would have befallen on Sukhoi. Its defense facilities are in grave danger, where most equipments are obsolete and worn out.
