I use LEGO Digital Designer a little bit, but mostly I prefer to sit down with my bricks and plan something out, after which I would order anything I'm missing from Pick-A-Brick or Bricklink (more often). Cheers!

@Subareed More information on making long curves from straight pieces of LEGO 9V track can be found in issue #1 of the free online magazine Railbricks (Google search). When making the slight turns, the overlap between each piece of straight track is smaller, resulting in increased resistance -- multiple power connections at different points around the layout helps keeps the voltage up and the trains running at high speed! :-) Cheers!
