What can one say about Angela that has not already been said by so many yet I for my part would like to say that I included this scene in my book "New York's Opera Society". This scene having impacted me so much that I felt it had to be in my book about opera.
I must admit I'm always torn between tears and giggles when i see this scene. The giggles are for the little ritual coughs to remind us that this beautiful river of sound is coming from a woman dying of a respiratory disease
I just find some portrayals of rodolfo to be so dry, and his just made me fall in love with him completely, and don't get me wrong, mimi's portrayal was amazing, I was just so taken aback by how much I was missing in some other portrayals. (hehe cough cough Villazon cough cough)
omg he is SUCH a good Rodolfo. When he started crying I was balling. and when marcello was like "couragio!" that was the most convincing crying from a rodolfo I have ever heard. He sounded so pain ridden...I just loved every minute of this.
bon... il est un peu trop émotif. Ça brise le dramatique à mon avis. Gheroghiu est magnifique dans le rôle Mimi mais je ne suis pas sur de Alagna comme Rodolfo... je suis sans doute trop vendu au style de Carreras.
alagna is truly heart rending, perhaps he thinks of the death of his first wife and the mother of his daughter. apart from this sounds over toned at 9:32 and on when he hollers 'mimì' 'mimì', but I think he's doing it on purpose, to add extra drama or maybe because he's overwhelmed by his emotions. wonderful, at any rate...
Oh my God, I couldn't even imagine trying to do this scene with a loved one. I would get far too involved, it would be too painful. This must be so difficult, especially for Alagna, who lost his wife several years ago... But, man, does it pay off for a beautifully heartbreaking scene!
They both are GREAT! Their performance is so MOVING. In this scene particularly you can see their mutual love and tenderness as a husband and wife. So they make a glorious couple on stage as well, apart from being great actors!
poor alagna, he really knows the feeling how to lose someone he loves as she is dying in his arms... the same happened with him in reality, that is why his crying is not exaggerated, I think he cries over the lost one right now...
A better criteria instead of a reductionist list proclaiming someone as #1, #2 etc is this: Has a given tenor, soprano etc produced artistic excellence in whatever he specialized? The answer to that question when it comes to Pavarotti is yes. The answer to that when it comes to Domingo or Carreras is definitely a now. They were good enough but nowhere excellent and unique.
ignorant question here...I've only seen this once but it was quite memorable...specifically does the theme at 3:41 appear elsewhere? This is something I've been unable to get out of my head since seeing this in Vienna years ago.
I have seen La Boheme several times and this aria, in it's entirety, is the final duet between Mimi and Rodolfo. You may have heard some artists performing a portion of it elsewhere, but it is definitely the glorious music of La Boheme. Go to FATHOM EVENTS at a local theater to see the Met LIVE from New York on screen. The new season starts in September. Absolutely wonderful!
Perhaps I could have worded my question better. I know this is clearly Puccini, my question was more directed toward where the melody at 3:41 appears in the rest of the opera. I think it may be tied to when Rudolfo gives Mimi the bonnet but I could be wrong. Does anyone know where else in Boheme this melody appears?
It appears in the aria "Si.Mi chiamano Mimi," in the first act when she sings the words -Sola mi fo il pranzo da me stessa....and -lá in una bianca cameretta...

Hey bugbear! As I expected, you are absolute dilletant in opera! Yes my little bugbear these stars are GREAT SINGERS, there are no better spinto tenor as Alagna and lyric soprano as Gheorghiu nowadays. The modern three are: 1Cura 2Alagna 3Vargas as older was 1Pavarotti 2Domingo 3Carreras:) and not 1Pavarotti 2Kraus 3Aragall:( and sopranos may be 1Gheorghiu 2Fleming 3Netrebko!!!
