It had a $4500 upper limit and after the program ended would have prevented a lot of cars from being wrecked as now good used cars are far more expensive, more so than the trade in value.
We in Austria had also a wreckage-bonus for turning in cars which are 15 years old and above. Most of these used cars were in good condition from top to bottom. Only the government restricts the CO2 output of the cars and declares environmental zones with green, yellow and red labels depending on CO2 exhaust. Producing new cars needs a lot more energy than driving an old car till it's ready for crushing.

Next to our local UPS Hub is a junkyard where many of the cars were these turned in ones. I as a car lover was about to cry everytime I saw what was there: ok, a lot of junk like early 90s Opel Vectra oder VW Passat, but also cars like BMW E39 5 Series!!!!, Volvo S40, and even a Jaguar XJ300.... all these cars could have stayed on the road for another at least 5 or 6 years.

Cash for clunkers was an interesting program.
It had a $4500 upper limit and after the program ended would have prevented a lot of cars from being wrecked as now good used cars are far more expensive, more so than the trade in value.

We in Austria had also a wreckage-bonus for turning in cars which are 15 years old and above. Most of these used cars were in good condition from top to bottom. Only the government restricts the CO2 output of the cars and declares environmental zones with green, yellow and red labels depending on CO2 exhaust. Producing new cars needs a lot more energy than driving an old car till it's ready for crushing.

Next to our local UPS Hub is a junkyard where many of the cars were these turned in ones. I as a car lover was about to cry everytime I saw what was there: ok, a lot of junk like early 90s Opel Vectra oder VW Passat, but also cars like BMW E39 5 Series!!!!, Volvo S40, and even a Jaguar XJ300.... all these cars could have stayed on the road for another at least 5 or 6 years.

Yea that cash for clunkers is a horrible program. All that energy to destroy perfectly good cars, then make new cars, i mean it's just a complete waste. This Volvo is a good example, the engine ran perfectly fine and would last a good while longer easily. People I think need to learn that their driving style contributes more to their fuel economy than any ridiculous program. I regularly got 28mph out of my 24 mpg rated V6 and it was fine. Clips like this makes the world hate the US honestly.

The non-turbo ones get ~28mpg highway, and the turbo ones are not cars you'd just trade in for a Prius. The previous owner of that car deserves a smack.

@godscuttingyoudown who ever said i dont repair my own cars?? since this program it has become more difficult for me to find older cars that i can service myself. i have a 1989 camaro, i installed a 350 v8(car had a 305). i swapped heads, installed a performance camshaft, bored out throttle body, high flow fuel pump, headers, 3" cat back, limited slip rear axle, and a performance chip. all while keeping this car emissions legal. dont make assumptions dumbass
