This song is beautiful as it stands, however you interpret it. This song makes me think of God and my best friend. It makes me think of all the people in my life who are by me which seems to me to be the lyrical effect of the song; a comforting dependence that can be relied on especially in times of trouble or a lack of self. "Oh Lord where are you?" can be taken a few ways but it is up to the listener as to what it means regardless of artist intent. It can be Christian or secular in meaning.
I liked this song prtty much... until the "o lord where are you". Darn it. It's not that I hate chrisitanism in particular, it's just that I never learned how to like a religion of any sort so don't start lapiding me.

My grandma died, and she was like a best friend. When my mom told me, I bit my lip, then felt like I was gonna perish. I trembled and ran back to my room, slamming the door. This song reminds me of the popular poem by Mary Stevenson - Footsteps in the Sand, about a person who sees their life flash before them while walking on a beach with God. The person notices that during the times they had suffered "sorrow, anguish or defeat", there was only one set of footprints walking with them.
