@bigturtlehand "Self Actualized" Is that your Indian name? "How, me big Chief Self Actualized. Me smoke 'em self actualizing pipe." Let me be frank with you. Do you mind if I'm frank with you? OK, I'll be Frank and you be Sally... Sally, we have to talk. You have developed delusional fantasies about Reality. I don't want to preach to you but Sweet Sandled Lord Jebus in Comfy Air Conditioned Heaven, you have GOT to get a grip. Life's about Accepting things, not constantly Denying them. I think...
Pasty white over-educated American ignoramuses are so enchanted with their own delusions about the world. We silly yanks are forever performing the most ridiculous stunts just to impress other equally misinformed, pampered, self important douche bags. The whole world is moments away from collapsing, "society" is imminently doomed, yet we have energy and $ and attention being paid to extravagant, close ended, unproductive, unimaginative endeavors. Damn, it's just more crap by idiots, for idiots..
You only came here to be a fucking troll so gtfo. McCandless is someone you obviously don't understand, you don't understand reaching self actualization. That is fine. But don't hate, criticize, and insult something you don't understand.
OK, so doing your "own thing" is a rule of thumb for life, but does it also include recklessly endangering yourself? What's the point of doing the big macho explorer routine today if there's no more physical frontiers? These guys, and gals that hurl themselves at xtreme nature are only masturbating. These senseless exercises in vanity profit no one but the egos of these poor, chemically imbalanced adrenaline junkies. They need treatment, not celebratory attention. And that's my puny opinion.
@KingKook You most likely you're everything you've just criticized: conceited, egotistical, you jerk your cock all the time, you're an idiot, disappointed, frustrated humanity. but doing so does not solve your condition. I feel sorry for you.
@KRISYSable Yes, of course I am everything you've described. How else would I know what I'm talking about? See? Life is more complicated & fascinating than even you can imagine. Your pity for me is an expression of your own insecurities & feelings of inferiority. It's textbook psychology 101. So, if we are done reciting obvious, irrelevant facts, I'll advance this friendly discussion by suggesting you spend a night sleeping on the runway of an airport. That would be an exciting adventure, aye?..
dear friend from underdeveloped intellect, my superiority not need to be expressed in a 'veiled' way as you try to do, it is clear from your own inconsistent response.I know places that are very close to those in which you suggest me to go and spend a night, in which you do not have you ever spent one instead you talk like a spoiled child. instead of talking nonsense, you should think about living things and then talk, silly man.
@KRISYSable WOW! I am impressed! You have thoroughly confused me. I don't have a clue what you're trying to say. Is English not your first language? If you want me to respond, please tap three times on the steam pipe... That's a joke. there's probably not a steam pipe connecting you and me. Get it?
@KRISYSable Do you always imitate Yoda? Find out who Yoda is before you respond with one of your strange, silly answers. Yoda. That's who you sound like...
The thing is, the real dude from Into the Wild was TOLD by locals that wintering at that camper was a crazy, stupid stunt and he did it anyway 'cause unfortunately he was emotionally/mentally compromised. He wasn't daring and brave, he was ill and misguided. Mental illness drives people to extremes. Sean Penn is mentally compromised so he was irrationally sympathetic. The story he told was inaccurate.
@KingKook I agree Sean PEnn is a total idiot, and the decision that kid made was also very stupid... But the great thing about that guy (McCandless) is that he took a different road... and didn't let people tell him what to do! He did what he wanted. Yes Alaska was stupid, but his life was not
just saw this on skytv here = awesome! I assumed, wrongly, that Sean Penn would be just another actor whose characters would be more interesting than anything in their personal lives. Jon Krakauer is a really interesting character also. Really inspiring, great viewing, great work! thx
just read both books (krakauers into thin air and boukreevs The summit) I think krakauer is a pussy , he left people for her fate ,and destroyed the reputation of a real hero.
boukreev went tree times out in the storm ,to rescue the clients of his own expedition and the clients of halls to.
meanwhile krakauer didint tryed to get out of his tent,
buddy....krakauer's not a guide and didnt come on this climb to help ppl summit...also...this is everest....i mean r u kidding....he may have had enough energy to GET to the others....but there was a better chance that he'd die with them...surviving everest in a storm is enough of a reason for him not to go.....as for boukreev....he's a strong climber and also a GUIDE.... that is what he does....
I agree, read both books and others besides. Krakauer may be a good writer but i lost all respect for him with his critisism of boukreev. That man was a true hero and DID save lives.
@tartanbeastie Yeah true, but tho i think its irresposible to take a job as a mountain guide at 8000m peaks at all, i think u can only be the mountainguide for other persons if ure able to guarantee a sort of safety for ur clients.
with any dangerous sport there are no guarantees, and only a fool would give a guarantee. Boukreev was a world class climber and as such did what he could.
Any climber, new or old knows that there are always risks no matter where in the world or what mountain you climb. You can do what you can to minimise risk but if there were no risks at all for many the excitement and enjoyment would then be gone.
u didnt get the point -.- I idnt say that u shouldnt be allowed to choose to perform dangerous sports or other activities. I just critizised that there are commercial mountainguides at 8000m peaks, because the profession of mountainguiding is defined as leading someone who is a less experienced/weker mountaineer at the mountain. to my oppinion this is a responsibility u just can't take, because if something takes a turn for the worse, high altitude mountaineering is a matter of life and death
Any1 know where I can watch this whole episode? I live in the UK so it hasnt been played over here I dont think so was just wondering if there was anywhere on the internet I could watch it?
You don´t even know how to spell Boukreev you arsewipe.
Boukreev pulled off one of the most incredible mountain rescues ever (for which he received the American Alpine Club´s highest award for bravery) while Krakaur laid shivering and useless in his tent.
The blame for the tragedy that day really lies with Rob Hall for not sticking to his turn around time.

well said. I believe Jon Krakauer is completely without credibility. Jon was without the experience or knowledge to pass such judgements as he did in his first book. He's destroyed a man's reputation, while simultaneously building a career for himself off the back of lies told in 'Into Thin Air'. I will boycott all of his work and recommend everybody else do the same.
Are you trying to insinuate that I'm not qualified to pass comment on 'Into Thin Air' because I've not climbed Everest? I've come to my own conclusion about Jon Krakauer based on the vast amount of debate that has taken place within the climbing community, and particularly by those climbers who are far more qualified to make judgements than Jon Krakauer. Please read 'Then Climb' by Anatoli Boukareev to get a more balanced view of what really happened.
"the climb" is just as biased as krakhauer's account, and if you're basing your judgment on krakhauer solely off that, then you're a dumbass, because each party's accounts of that day were based off of their own faulty memories of what happened while they were all semi-conscious and at the brink of death.
My comments are supported by the MAJORITY of the professional 'climbing' community and 'climbing' press, not sensationalist journalists. This is my opinion and others are entitled to disagree; but surely without the need to denigrate the debate to petty name-calling?
Just exactly who are we talking about here pal? What criticism by the professional climbing community has thrown at JK? To my mind, he stood to gain NOTHING by being critical of AB, who, let us not forget had repeatedly pissed Scott Fischer off with his selfish behaviour.
You seem to think you know Pean. even if you're right...who cares? He made one of the best fucking films i've ever seen. You must not understand the meaning behind the movie or something.

You're lucky to be here, too many of you liberal assholes....like spoiled rich kids that talk about how horrible their life is. Reason #1: You have the right to bash your own country and nobody can do shit about it!
