That's a great tip. I will look for that shoulder mount. In the mean time I'll use my mono-pod that came with my tri-pod. It does help with lowering the shakiness.

you can have a steadycam with vest and everything and the image could still look like crap, or do what i did, run trough a 200 feet corridor with your tripod and some specialized running and boom as steady as in the movies! as joe said it's not the gear it's how you use it! :)

Haha I used to do the same thing with the tripod before getting that shoulder mount. Best 30 bucks ever spent! Although, one of the extra attachments for the mount broke, but now it's just shorter.

that's the mount i am getting, this is the only one that even makes sense. i can't see forking out over $700-$1000 for something i could build myself for pennies on the dollar. I found the Velbon 687 tripod like you have there before but it looks like you have a different fluid head on it. most of the velbon's are pan head which is why i never chose them before not a fan I'd rather have a fluid head that i can put on a slider if i wanted to later on personally

Woo! the cowboy studio shoulder mount i got mine last month, works amazingly! Joe- im sure you have reflectors but i thought id tell you, theres a 5 in 1 reflector on amazong, one side is a flag, gold reflector, silver reflector, white reflector, and the center piece is a scrim, bout 3.5 feet in diameter, and only $15

Joe, when I shot my stuff on the 60D I had problems exporting in FCP. The video quality turned out terrible even though I tried several exports and even H.264.

Maybe talk about the editing part and how you import and what you export your final footage as after colour correction and effects are added?

best image stabilization is tripod. Any time i can use a tripod i do, unless the shot requires alot of movement or the handheld movement is an effect it is always the worse option using a handheld setup and its also extremely lazy if you ask me!

@Tweek5470 no, rolling shutter has never really been an issue for me. I find I try to avoid it while shooting but when editing i discover that I never really end up using any footage that has rolling shutter issues.

I really like that this wasn't just about using a tripod in the conventional way or software image stabilization, but using an affordable shoulder mount and a different way to make use of a tripod, which most amateurs will have.

It's just crazy how expensive the photography and filming gear is. And I'm not talking about the cameras or the lenses, but about the rigs, steadycams, dollys and other stuff. They are quite often ridiculously overpriced.

That $30 shoulder mount is a real bargain ...
