I have a pair..I have the Bikila's . They are great. I walked in them for two weeks, and got acclimated to them..and the first time I ran in them..I ran farther and faster before having to take a break. They are amazing. I can't wait for the next pair.
I Have a pair. IT's true it takes the pinkie a week or two to get comfortable. Also, it really strengthens your calves if you run in them because when barefoot you naturally run on the pads of your feet, which is all calf muscle building. I bought mine at REI for about $90. I really dig them.
@bushnewman hey man im also from around lima (Bellefontaine) and ive raked the surrounding 50 miles for retail that has these and theres none your best best is to go to the website size yourself (following the website's provided sizing steps ) then the cheapest i can find is MTB shoes at around 50$. godspeed to you
@IampureSol : I bought a pair of these last week, and made the hideous mistake of hiking in them, I was limping for two days from stepping on jagged rocks the whole way. On a trail that is dirt or grass they'd be fine but it was very much like walking barefoot on rocks for 5 miles uphill, not that enjoyable.
@wreckelite 9 months is quite good! I wasn't that lucky and I only wore them occasionally. I'm now thinking of getting a pair of Bikila's instead and hope that the new line is of higher quality.
@mrrrxxxxx I like those but my problem is that I have to wear 34s and they have that size in limited styles/colors. I have a 35 for wearing with socks in my PT uniform but the toes really are too long.
@wreckelite Oh, I thought you were a guy. True about the sizing, but Bikila is the same size as Classics, which means if you wear size 34 KSOs, you should get size 35 Bikilas. Size 35 is still hard to find though...
After I tore my ACL two years ago, I noticed it was a bit painful when I would jog in regular cushioned running shoes. One thing I would notice is that when I would be barefoot, it was almost pain free. I'm definately getting these. I've been trying to get them for a while now but they seem to always be sold out in my size. I know it sounds weird but it's true. No joke.
meh.... this is pure marketing, if you want to have shoes that are as close to barefoot as possible just get a pair of good plimsoles that have a thin rubber base. An example would be Onitsuka Tiger's Tai Chi shoes, they are slim and are laced, and so they probably have a better support.. if you are worried about the thin base, don't I have been wearing my Onitsuka Tigers for 1.5 years, almost every day, and they are only JUST* beginning to wear down.
I like your advice, but I don't think this is pure marketing. Sure these are expensive, but the whole idea is for your toes to SEPARATE. The shoes you wear are comfortable, but your toes do not separate.

since when do people wear shoes when they go swimming? You wouldn't use Fiver Fingers as Climbing shoes either, cause they don't have the proper ankle support for climbing. Use toes to change direction? Don't make me laugh! 99.9 % of forces used to change direction comes from your legs, not your toes.
1) Some bodies of water have sharp things at the bottom, e.g. broken glass. Also, when swimming is used to get from one place to another, it doesn't make sense to leave shoes behind.
2) Some people will climb to get from one place to another. Changing into and out of specialist shoes is awkward.
3) Toes are useful for controlling traction and balance. Not being able to use your toes puts you at a disadvantage when forced to change direction quickly, especially on unpredictable terrain.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
1) Sharp things at the bottom? Five fingers can't protect you from that... where are you going? people still don't really wear shoes to swim! what kind of swimming are you talking about?
2) Oh and whos fault is that, can't be bothered to wear the proper footwear is the person's fault! As I said before, for general climbing, Five fingers does not give enough support to protect the ankle.
3) Dude really? Does it really make that much difference?
1) Rocks and shells are often sharp. So are broken glass and pieces of metal. Five fingers resist all of these.
2) So, you're saying I should always wear shoes with ankle support, in case I take a short cut through a car park, over a fence, or up the side of a building?
3) Yes. Have you ever played tag against traceurs? wrestled on wet grass? Attempted tricking in the rain? Rage froobled?
Sandals are good, but there is also evidence that because your toes are in constant flexion (or curling) to keep the sandals on, this is bad for your toe joints in the long run. Also $15.00 socks would not protect your feet from thorns, rocks, or water.
Still, I have had a lot of fun trekking in Teva sandals. Having air around your feet is great. And they have straps, so you don't have to work your toes to keep them on.
guys if you want to start barefoot running start slowly.... If you have been wearing shoes with a lot of support, dont just go straight to all vibrams or all barefoot. Start mixing in one or two barefoot routines on a soft surface per week. Then it will be easier.
Okay, so these have really caught my eye and Ive heard some really good things about them, however Ive got one question I cant seem to find an answer to. I am getting ready to take on some pretty serious military training in about 3-4 months and I was wondering if these would be a useful conditioning tool. I like that I can train different muscles that normally wouldn't be taxed as much, but mind you while in the military I have a 10 mile PT run that I will have to take in combat boots.. Input?
Train with your military boots dude! Here in Sweden we get boots months before we start, to get our feet used to them. Walk far, and trough terrain you would normally never even consider. It is also easy to damage an ankle without the ankle-support a large boot gives..
Hoped it helped!?
I am going to buy these to use at campsites, bathing in the sea, climbing, sprinting, and kicking some monkey ass =)
2) Read up on Emil Zapotek, the Czech hero who started running in the military
3) Train in combat boots and Five Fingers, mix it up and keep your body guessing
Believe it or not, you don't need ankle support to run. In fact, once you get your feet used to running barefoot, you'll be safer than ever. I used to have low arches before I started running in these shoes.
Im using shoes with good ankle support, but it really feels like something is missing... Are these shoes really as good as they say? How long did it take for you to run like (or better) your ordinary running shoes?
I haven't been timing myself lately, but I'm doing a 5k in a few weeks so we'll see. I will say this: I enjoy running again for the first time since freshman year of high school.
The idea of ankle support in a shoe is like saying "I don't want to break my arm, so I'm going to put a cast on it." Sure your arm is safer, but it can never develop it's natural strength.
i hav the clasics in a w36 and like i hav pain like on the ball of my foot and my toes when i walk in mine iv had mine for 2 days now and i ran a mile today...during the mile it didnt urt at all but now it dose....is there any thing i can do about this or r my feet going to get used to this d like be fine?
Your feet will get used to it over time. Some discomfort is to be expected, since you are now using muscles that aren't really stimulated with regular shoes.
Yeah well I do Parkour so I run in them every day. I do lots of hardcore work on them and they look brand new. They hold up really well! Hope this helps... if you need any more help just message me.
That's good to know, I was worried about the sole being too thin and wearing down easily on asphalt and pavement. I'll probably start running in the grass anyways. Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah don't be worried at all about wearing down the sole. Im sure you can attempt but you'll fail. They are great because you build up a lot of muscle in your feet =D
These are amazing, since I started running in these I no longer get shin splints. They take a while to get used to though. I actually ended up getting the KSOs. Thanks for recommending
I wouldn't recommend too much pavement with these. Our feet were never designed to take the stresses of running on cement.
I run with the STKs on grass and dirt roads. They're brilliant for that. I'm a cross country runner and would never recommend running on roads anyway. Start out very easy with these because you're arches and calves/achilles will need time to adapt. Try walking in them for a week first and gradually add them into your running and you'll be amazed.
I actually found that out the hard way... I came home on my first run and my feet killed me, but every time I ran in the grass, my feet felt so much better. I was sore the first day but I'm quickly getting used to it.
My experience is these are no worse then running shoes on pavement. Then again I've had no problems running totally bare on pavement so I may be abnormal. How would you actually compare them to running barefoot?
Interesting about the pavement thing. I find that I'm far too ginger about walking around bare footed but when I've got my VFFs on I'm confident to run.
I haven't been doing it long, and don't want to make it sound like I'm an expert. For me I like the sensation of barefeet. I know it sounds newagey but feeling the texture of the ground makes me happier when walking etc... I walk dogs for a living (for now) and in 4 years have never had a dog with a cut paw. If this is true for them, why not us?

yes real smart walk on this things step on a pointy rock a little glass or such and expect to go barefoot for reals in some clinic unable to wak lololololol who comes with this stupid ideas ?????
Hey, I have a friend who stepped into broken glass. The glass got stuck in the sole but it did not get through to his foot. You should at least try to get some facts before you make a fool out of yourself.
I went on the website, picked out a couple of pairs that I liked. but then I noticed they don't deliver outside of north america, I live in Scotland. please Help!!!
No you don't wear socks with them. But, if you buy the classic or the sprins, the open top lets your feet breath so they don't sweat as bad as in a regular shoe. And if they do start to stink, you can just throw them in your washing machine with a cold water cycle and let them air dry. DO NOT DRY THEM IN THE DRYER MACHINE!! It will make them shirnk.
these shoes are ridiculously AWESOME. If Vibram were a public company, I'd be buying tons of stock in it, because this shoe is going to BLOW UP in the same way that crocs did.
what surfaces are recommended/ not recommended for running in these; track? pavement? how well do these work for sprinting on a track? can you get them w/. cleats?
no u cant get them with cleats. best surfaces ive found r grass/gravel. track starts to hurt after a while but ull be noticably faster without the padding of a regular shoe. ive found pavement isnt very enjoyable after just a few minutes of just walking. theyre best on natural survaces not artificial ones.
I walked around Virginia Beach (on the strip) barefoot for hours. I loved it, don't get me wrong. 1st barefooting experience ever! But, after a while my soft feet were starting to hurt because of no protection. This is a great middle ground to those wanting to go barefoot but without the pain.
So far I'm enjoying mine...for practice of silat, martial arts and just hanging out. Ha, ha....didn't Al Bundy on Married with Children propose this shoe back in the 1990's !!! ( after head trauma and believing he saw God ) ???
I have tree pair and I seen in this vid theres different colors than those advertised of the website or any retailers website. What gives? I want new colors!!!

Don't you love when people with knowledge introduce you to unique concept ?
Just got mine at Atlanta Shoe Expo ( thanks Jeff !) and I love them .
Looks like Nike Free paved the road to general barefoot awareness .

what surfaces are recommended/ not recommended for running in these; track? pavement? how well do these work for sprinting on a track? can you get them w/. cleats?
HumAnimAlien51 2 years ago
no u cant get them with cleats. best surfaces ive found r grass/gravel. track starts to hurt after a while but ull be noticably faster without the padding of a regular shoe. ive found pavement isnt very enjoyable after just a few minutes of just walking. theyre best on natural survaces not artificial ones.

So far they seem enjoyable!
