I am so impressed with this performance of this song. I think that the conductor's pauses, breaths, and subtle nuances add so much to the meaning of the song. I agree there is a TEMPO dispute out there for all of us hopeless romantics. Personally, I sing it at a slower tempo that what is performed here, but I agree with @noirishluck4me 's comment about discussing the tempo with the conductor... this tempo really does make the song beautiful w/o turning it into a mournful rendition. Bravo! A+
Oh this is lovely!! I sang this in choir in sophomore year of college (if my semesters aren't mixed, they all went so fast!) and it made me want to cry. This is splendidly sung.
@brasco2621 You do use the same arrangement we did, but your interpretation is also done in a quicker, brighter tempo than we did. Ours was melancholy, wistful yearning of love unrequited, steadfast in longevity with patience to wait. Yours is of love found, requited, hopeful of many years ahead and promises to protect until last breath. I do not feel your interpretation incorrect, just different to my preference. And, of all I have seen here, yours is the one I will view. It is the best.
@noirishluck4me Thank you for such eloquent insight. I am honored by your comments. On a more practical level, when I spoke to Mr. Mulholland he indicated to me that there is a misprint in the tempo indication. If taken literally, as indicated on the score, then the overall tempo and mood created will be slower and more towards what you speak of. I chose to go with what Mulholland actually heard in his head and felt in his heart which allows for a more melliflous line.
I sang this as a soprano in the 1982 All-State Honors Choir in Indiana. I am finding that all the versions available here have much quicker tempos, or completely different arrangements than ours was. It diminishes the song for me somewhat, no matter the brilliance of the performance. Am I the only one who feels the song is being treated as a race instead of a wooing love song?
Nice conducting! Good Choir! You're lucky to have had a chance to work with Dr. Flummerfelt. He was one of the highlights of my undergraduate work. Westminster Choir College '01
Ithaca College Choir just did this on tour with staging - as in we were coupled up with a contrasting voice part S/B or A/T and sang to our lovers, instead of on risers - by our last performance I couldn't get through the piece without choking up....
My highschool concert choir went to china for the pre-olympic ceremonies and this was one of the songs we got to sing. It is one of the most beautiful pieces i've ever done and it gives me chills everytime i hear it. the song is just amazing!

@noirishluck4me Both scores look identical yet one is what Mulholland actually intended while the other is not.
