i dont know but apocalypse now has something about it that no other movie has, maybe the chaos of its own evolution, my favorite movie of all time so far
I actually think that redux is better than most give it credit for. It does have a lot of drawn out scenes of talking, but "Beyond boring"...absolutely not. They give interesting insight into Kurtz's philosophy and why he decided to fight the war the way he did. That was the driving force of the movie: Willlard trying to piece together the motives of Kurtz as he travelled up the river, and to see it revealed in such a thought provoking way was simply genius.
While also the presentation was miraculous and the ending was brought about after a nice sequence of events with an ample amount of drama and suspicion. Saving Private Ryan was a great war movie. However, after watching Apocalypse Now you'll be changed. What will change you? "The Horror. The Horror."
To place Saving Private Ryan above Apocalypse Now is ludacris. Saving Private Ryan failed to bring forth any emotions when a character died since there was no background and the opening beach scene shows the horror and gores of war, but soon after you have soldiers who hold too interesting personalities to be in the middle of a warzone. For Apocalypse Now, it did drag on a bit, but it showed the transitions of emotions and thoughts of Sheen's character to more than make up for it.
Great choices but giving Apocalypse Now only 7/10 is a travesty. I generally like your taste in movies, except your love for Avatar, but you giving Apocalypse Now such a low score is just wrong, WRONG I SAY.
@SparedSOUP999 ARE YOU KIDDING ME !!!!!! Apocalypes NOW wins the title it was the best war movie of all time it won like 4,000 grammis and it had the best story line to it.
@hongrad you know nothing about movies. And people like you are the reasin Hollywood is making shitty movies. Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Platoon and Apocalyse Now.
saving private ryan....the biggest bunch of bullshit for a war movie ever. piss-poor premise poorly constructed, non-factual,
a squad of men walking through a field in a combat zone bunched up like kids instead of taking the ridgeline and staying 20 meters apart. everyone with a different uniform, TALKING.
after that ...we are in for a bunch of horseshit where every scene is designed to show one of the actors getting his personal opportunity to perform his own death scene.
I regret my comment about the "American Pride" in this movie. I watched the film again and it occured to me that there really isn't a whole lot of Americanism in it. It had been a while since I last saw it when I wrote my comment. Thing is, almost all war movies I've seen are American. I guess I'm just desensitized by them. No offense!
The story focused on the mission, unlike what I remembered last time.
Now stop sending hate messages saying that I'm a communist, because I'm not. (Seriously)
saving private ryan is much more over all entertaining. apocalypse now had its moments but it was weird at times also. not saying it was a bad movie but it is kinda odd id say to call it the best WAR movie from a war movie point of view
A somewhat forgotten war movie that is my personal favourite is the japanese "grave of the fireflies". People can be put off by the idea of an animated war movie but it is genuinely the most heart wrenching piece of cinema I have ever seen.
I'm shocked that no one has listed FULL METAL JACKET, shame on you all. And they is 1 ww2 movie set in the pacific theatre starring sean penn, jared leto, john travolta, n the main guy from the oceans movies. just forgot name of movie.
there's a movie called empire of the sun its is truly a great film it shows you the image of a kid in World War II trying to survive and trying to get back to his parents i give the movie a 10. also great acting :]
I'm not going to bitch about how Jon didn't give Saving Private Ryan a perfect score (awesome does mean awesome), but I personally would give the film a 10/10. Definitely one of my favorite movies. Also, fans of SPR should check out Children of Men.
5: Zombieland 4: Master & Commander 3: Gods & Generals 2: Gran Torino 1: Dances With Wolves Note: I had DOZENS & DOZENS of movies to pick from, and it took me forever to come up with my favorite 5, so I'll put down the 5 movies that nearly made it in (surprisingly enough, 2 of them are Mel Gibson) 5:Apocalypto 4: Mel Gibson's the Patriot 3: The Last Samurai 2: Valkyrie 1: The Lost Boys
@1Minute60Seconds I still don't get how Inception is viewed as a great movie. Sure it was new and flashy but it was SOOO SLOWW starting. Once they started jumping back and forth I couldn't follow it. How about some categories? Comedies, Action, Documentaries, Horror?
@iansucksass If you dont understand the movie then it's basiccly your fault, not the movies, cause I can promise you that Inception has a very well figured story, you just need to see it for a second time to understand it better. I wouldnt say that Inception started slow. It started mysteriously and very interesting and there was amazing action in the very beginning. The beginning was amazingly tense I'd say.
@lansa23 - You act as if there's a time-limit... I only picked two to review, as is the format of the program. If I wanted to review more, I would have - you fucking idiot.
I agree with you about Apocalypse Now--Redux, but I'm not sure why you chose that version; Redux was a release for fans only. My favorite war movies are Paths of Glory, Bidge on the River Kwai, & Hell in the Pacific. If Eastwood, I think Letters from Iwo Jima--Heartbreak Ridge is entertaining but not great and Flags of our Fathers is just too long and not as insightful about war.
I think I would have to say Battle for Haditha was the best war movie because it raised the curtain (to the people who hadn't already raised it, at least) on the mind-bending psyche of soldiers in the middle-east today. It helped portray the atmosphere our troops are in right now and the "kill or be killed" idea they are exposed to.
i have to strongly disagree with u saying that saving private ryan is the best war movie. i would say Glory was the best one ever made. SPR was just about a captain who sacrificed his life for one pvt. Glory was about racial struggle and the intense want for for freedom and equality.
Apocalypse Now is the greatest war film and in my opinon, the greatest film ever made. ( Not talking about the redux version ). This movie blew my mind. I can understand someone who's like 13 or 14 to think it's boring. I wouldn't think someone like you would think so. I didn't find a second of this film even barley boring. Please people .. don't forget Glory, the Alamo, Uncommon Valor. even Red dawn. all very interesting war movies. i just don't want this list to be only ww2 and Vietnam movies.. please think people..
Black Hawk Down ; Saving Private Ryan ; Windtalkers ; Pearl Harbor ; And Platoon Were The Best War Movies ! I Left Out Some Because Its Hard To Write On My iPod Hehe
Full... metal... jacket, and its not even close.Because it covers it all.Tv guide called it an ''uncompromisingly bleak film'',and that's why it's the best.Because all war films should be uncompromisingly bleak.I mean seriously, who wanted to enlist after seeing this movie?
Letters from Iwo Jima, great film. Probably the best one ever made. It shows an interesting story through a different perspective. I really recommend watching the trailer.
this is to much. try watching, assembly,( ji jie hao) a vary long engagement, stalingrad, the best always has to come from the united states, and spielberg. enough already.
That brings me to the fact that it was the 82nd not the 101st who held The bridge at Rommel, and to my knowledge there was no major engagement only minor infantry skirmishes. So yea storming the beaches scene was very well done. Though I want to say that the Rangers landed at point du hoc, but that may not be true. On with the list Das Boot has to be on there. The lost battalion, Patton, and Im sure there's more. As for movies like Platoon and FMJ, better off watching Hamburger Hill.
The 2nd SS panzer division was at Caen on the opposite side of the allied advance, fighting the british. The whole lets make em SS so we don't feel bad about slaughtering them is something that Hollywood needs to get over. Most of the Germans Fighting in the war were not Nazi's and not in the SS. That being said the Waffen SS which is what the second was part of had no dealings with what went on at the concentration camps. That being said they were members of the nazi party. Had to be to get in
Best in terms of historical accuracy, in no particular order. Hamburger Hill, We Were Soldiers, Gettysburg, Gods and Generals, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Generation Kill, Tora Tora Tora!, Battle of Midway, The Longest Day, A Bridge to Far, Battle of the Bulge, The first 24-minutes of Saving Private Ryan. I would just put SPR on the list but it does the normal hollywood bs of having the heroes fight an SS unit. To be precise their insignia was that of the 2nd SS panzer division.

Jonathan gives these movies a really honest rating
he does not just give a movie a 10 it really has to prove itself to him

Letters from Iwo Jima, great film. Probably the best one ever made. It shows an interesting story through a different perspective. I really recommend watching the trailer.

dude what about full metal jacket?!?!?!
theomen88 8 months ago
