I would like to add that teachers whom I've listened to (Pema Chodron, Trungpa Rinpoche and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche) have all noted that the mind will continue to generate thoughts, but the process of meditation will give you greater focus and control in the long term.
So if you're new to the practice, don't be discouraged because that monkey is running around. Stick with it and he'll slow down in time (but rarely stop altogether).
