A GTX380 will be about 10% to 15% faster 5870 from what specs suggest, but will also be hotter, more power hungry, more expensive and in very very late to market.

Fermi should hit shops in Feb/Mar/Apr, by that time you might aswell have bought a 5800/5900. ATI 6000 series is set for launch in October 2010.

It's not running on only 1x6pin or 8pin connection, that's just not possible for a GPU like Fermi. It's a huge die, 3 billion transistors.

I imagine it'll run with 2x6pin or 1x8pin + 1x6pin connection like 5850/5870. That doesn't mean it'll have similar power draw though.

Fermi isn't a card full stop, it's the name of the chip/architecture that will power both Tesla (workstation, hpc) and GeForce (consumer, gaming) cards from Nvidia in the future.

A Tesla card based on Fermi would be able to play COD4.

There are no patent disputes with Fermi that prevent it going on sale, Nvidia isn't in dispute with ATI.

DirectX is Microsoft's technology, ATI was just first to market with a card that supports DirectX 11.

ATI may have helped Microsoft during the development and ATI cards may have been used, but that doesn't grant them rights to it. Where did you read they own parts of DX11?

Nvidia may have underestimated ATI 5000 but they were not complacent. Fermi was meant to launch in November with Windows 7 but they're having difficulty producing such a large chip, now it looks like Feb/March at best :)

DX 10 cards can't run DX 11 games because they don't meet the requirements. For example, a GPU has to have tessellation and support for DirectCompute to be DX11 complaint.

ATI has always ensured complete compatibility with the latest DX releases in new cards. 2000, 3000 and 4000 series cards support features pulled from DirectX 10 (pulled because Nvidia couldn't be bothered to implement them basically) :)

Physx was pretty much made by Nvidia and for Nvidia so you wouldn't be seeing it in ATI and you don't really need it since not many developers are gonna put their eggs in Nvidia's basket when more and more ATI cards are being sold.

also, nvidia's cards are geared still towards high texture filtering (while that is the older technique) ati has shifted over to true processing to replace filtering in the near future. ati does have the newest and greatest technology its just waiting for game makers to catch up

Nvidia still uses DDR3, so even if they have over 1Gb of data, and over 512Mb of output, their cards are still weaker than ATI. My reasoning? Play any game at max settings. NO, not 4x or 8x AA and AF, I mean 24xAA and 16xAF. You will see ATI spank the shit out of Nvidia because of the GDDR5 being able to take full advantage of highest settings.

Even bench websites like tomshardware or guru3d don't use max setting.(you can force 24x AA n 16xAF by using the GFX's setup menu, example CCC for ATI)

I don't know about you guys, but on alot of those benchmarks the GTX 295 beat the HD 5870 almost every single time, coupled with the fact it performed better on both the Pi and 3D Mark Vantage tests.
