...the "grand tradition" pianists, Richter-Horowitz-Rubinstein, etc., never abused their faces...perhaps the Lang Lang listeners will one of these string him up...when he pays with his life for the puss abuse, it will be a moral lesson to all the others...
@zigeunerlieder ...I am not quite sure what you are trying to say or complain about. Serkin and Brendel could and DID learn something from Richter-Horowitz-Rubinstein, but NOT the other way around, pianism-wise. But I am only talking about the puss-mobility here, NOT pianism. On the puss-mobility factor, Serkin and Brendel look OK to me, generally, but I AM proposing that Lang Lang be strung up by his "fans", yes, for his puss-mobility...well, for his pianism too, actually...
Its amazing how many people are concerned about facial expressions. MAybe they should just turn the sound all the way off and watch only! And to compare Katsaris with Lang lang about the expressions is purely unfair.
just like lang-lang with his stupid face gesture but has amazing piano playing, katsaris also... and this is one of my favorite chopin 3rd sonata implementation, with mistuko uchida
Very interesting tricks,actually...Martellato in the first mvmnt, and left hand helping in the Scherzo - nice,indeed...Just the rhytmic structure looks weird a bit, right?
who are you organman52? chopin is one of the most melodic and singing people i can think of besides mozart and wagner. you're what we like to call an elitist. you probably don't even play all that well. would just list to hear some of your interpretations if you know exactly how things are done, and since you are quite, in fact, well known for your astounding performances (live and on youtube)
organman; what is wrong with being pleased with yourself? sign of good health I'd say. There's no instruction of facial expression but there's no indication that you shouldn't be happy with yourself (facial expression/smile) either.. as you've put it; you observe his playing.. I listen to his playing. Should he be like a robot and not look at anything else other than the piano..? my god, stop watching video's if it annoys you, and just listen because you sound ridiculous with your arguments.

The facial contortions, staring at the ceiling, arm waving, self-approval, eyes closing are exactly what the composer did NOT have in mind when he wrote this masterpiece. How dare this man destroy it like this? Once again, it goes to prove that phenomenal technique is one thing, and music is entirely another.
That's exactly the point - there are no such indications in the music.
We all see things through our own eyes, Matthew. When I observe him play, I see a man who is incredibly pleased with himself. That's really all I was saying.
I don't see a man who is pleased with himself. I see a man who is enjoying the music he is playing. Rightly so. The performer's actions do not destroy a piece, the performer's playing does. And Katsaris plays very well.
I'm sorry, organman52, but has Chopin written anywhere NOT to make any face expression...? I think he's just enjoying the music, besides such expressing is way better than being a robot, right?
He CREATES Music.... his creativity is UNSURPASSED.... very intellectual and fun!!! very HARD to do... it's easy to be common (imitating others) and be boring.... than to actually have your own SAY about the music... HAIL TO CYPRIEN KATSARIS!!!!

This comment is the result of brainwashing. How DARE you or anyone imply that someone OTHER THAN CHOPIN had anything to do with the creation of this music? If Mr. Katsaris' POUNDING of the inner voices is the way Chopin intended it, then the entire world is perverse. Well, it is anyway.
love the left hand gesture in the beginning..(after final chord of previous movement) great performance of someone who feels comfortable with the notes. here's a guy who manages to make chopin sound like fun... and moreover: music! 1.28 magical colour.. thanks for posting it!
Dont look at him at all , better listen to his music .. why he is plaing this in different tempos ? mb he smarter of you - greatest virtuosos of the world...\ upload you own video here - and i ll tell u a few "" words about you genial PF
Personally i am under the persuasion that the best pianist who plays this is Evgeny Kissin. He plays it faster but with more feeling and to perfection.
Katsaris is one of the absolute greats. The "diapason" music magazine proclaimed him as one of 100 best musicians of the century. And rightfully so. check him out at www cyprienkatsaris net
I love how he takes time even during the vivace 8th notes... many pianists play the first and last sections in strict tempo, losing much of the playfulness of this movement.
Katsaris has chosen a wonderful tempo - most pianists play this scherzo way too fast and over exegerated. katsaris belongs to the great pianists of our time. and he puts the music in the foregorund not himself

I find it completely silly the way he wants to embellish this piece, both with strange rubatos and weird voices.
Maybe he lacks the self-confidence to accept that playing it the way it was written can be good enough.

it´s lovely the way he show unusual voices in the scherzo, a very fresh interpretation! something different, bravo!!

Forgive me, but did Chopin mark the music with any instructions regarding facial expressions?
He did mark the movement 'scherzo' meaning 'jest', or 'joke.' Surely a genuine smile here and there therefore, is a good thing?
Sorry if it troubles you, but I really enjoyed it.
