@doerlidoe Thanks for comment! About the speed it is always hard to judge from video shots because it seems always much faster than seeing a model in real (must have something to do with the viewing angle and stuff like that). As a matter of fact the vessel is not scale speed even so they have run faster than one would expect. Regarding the engine, yes it is electric power. A real working steam engine would not be a problem at all, there is plenty of room, but E is just easier in handling.
Also, such a big model would also require a rather big and powerful (model) steam engine.
probably nothing that is comercialy available: making it nessesary to construct one 's own engine ( and boiler ). Still this model is a remarkable archievement !
Oh yes, there are many. Just search YouTube for "USS Arizona RC model" and you gonna find plenty. Anyway most of them are scratch built (no kit or ready-to-run) but seldomly in the same scale as the J O'B from Rolf (1/35 !!) with a total length of nearly 4 meters.
In general you are right but I don't fully agree. First of all video shots from models on water always look much faster than it appears in real. It's just an effect we recognise every time (must have something to do with the angles I guess). The speed of the J O'B in this video is too fast at certain points but as you might see on the wave pictures quite often it fits (anyway the waves are always a quite good indicator to judge on a model boat).
I can't really tell but it is for sure that much that you could buy a nice car from it. But it is not the financial value that counts. It is much more the satisfaction to complete such a project which took Rolf over a period of more than 5 years and many tousand hours of work.
There is definitely a lot to see as Rolf build so many tiny details. But anyway it is a ship and ships wanna get wet - only looking is just half the fun.
Fantastic model, only thing missing is smoke. Amazing to see one of that size. I got to work around the SS John W Brown down in Baltimore Harbor a couple years ago, Amazing! 5*
@DocterJones Thanks for the comment! The vid was taken from her maiden voyage, that is way no 'special' functions have been operated at that time. As a matter of fact there are numberous functions available to be controlled remotely, e.g. cranes, sound, light, anchor, weapons can be fired with flash lights at the muzzle, and and and. Of course smoke from the stack will be shown as well!
Sweet! Then I'm eagerly awaiting any and all following videos you may produce of this ship. I'm still working on a 1/72 scale flower corvette, but funds have been stripped from the shipyard following these tough economic times in the US.
@RetoFor I just double checked with Rolf: Yes, there will be smoke. All the additional functions had been disabled at the time the move was taken. The ship will be fully operational at the occasion of our boat shop end of April 2010. There will be video shots and surely tons of photos available after that. Just contact our webpage (see channel info) to check them out.
Everybody who is interested to see this model in action will have the chance to see it live at the model boat show on April 24 and 25, 2010 in Wohlen, Switzerland. For more Information please check out our club site.
@FJF130 It's my cousin building it in Denmark, and when I can I help. I'm going in maj-juni for a visit and will take pictures / movie of how it's going. I cannot tell you the scale but it's about 2.50 meters long. I'm training doing the airplane launch ramp, because I'm more into planes than ships hehe. But that's easy enough. I'll post videos / pictures when I have them.

Impressive, very nice model. Superb workmanship and attention to detail.
And also very fast, much faster than a real Liberty .
I supose this one is powered by an electric motor.
Would be super to have this model driven by a real steam engine !

Hmm, where could you possibly buy a model boat more than 12 feet long ? Oh yes, nowhere! Except you build it by yourself.

Gorgeous

You need to drive that model as slow as possible to get the scale effect. Speed spoils the realism.

Very good work!!! Very nice Ship!.
Me & my friend we are working on a ~2.50m long Adm.GrafSpee replica, also with plane launch ramp. We're still working hard!

In which scale do you build the Graf Spee? Would you have any pictures of the progress?
