ok say its 2011 what did u do with all this? i have some boxes my self but they dont expire ti;; 2015 and if i dont use them by then i will give them to the homeless ! just thinking did u do the same?
Ive had MREs that were more than 10yrs old and they were still good, but it all depends on how there stored and what type of food it was. Ive also had canned food 8yrs old and older that i had left from the Y2K scare and it was edible, of course canned food will last longer than MREs. If u can find it, thu i dont think they make it any more, the maple nut cake is great and so r the BBQ meatballs.
Wow, that's a lot of MRE's. I never got my hands on military MRE's yet, but the Sure-Paks, aPacks, and Menu C's are good. I always like to keep a couple of crates in my house in case of a rainy day. You have a mighty fine friend there to just give you 8 and a half cases of MRE's just like that.
do you like these shelves i was afraid they would buckle under alot of wieght, also are they reasonable priced cuz im a teenager and dont want to put out $150 bucks for a big metal one
Only use MREs for bait in your traps! YUK! I preffer to make my own MREs. Date them and I use a Food saver to suck out the air from the bag. You can getthese at Walmart.
I picked up some MRE's from the army surplus stores... the guys at the store were saying that they don't come with exp dates on the boxes... obviously they lied. I hear ppl eat MRE's far beyond their exp dates - what are your thoughts on that? I have mine in my emergency pack so it is cool and dry...just don't know how old it is.
@OneFabFisher - The date on the box is not really a "expiration" date - its more like a test date. When that date is reached, your supposed to eat one of the meals to see if its still good.
As for MREs expiring - yes, they expire. I opened one on a hiking trip, and was was expired. It was so nasty tasting I could not eat it - and it had a funny smell to it.
@OneFabFisher Store your MRE's in a cool area, you'll be fine. I'm currently eating MRE's from 1998/99 and they're great. If you're concerned about long term food issues, buy freeze dried in #10 cans and you'll be eating them in 20-30 years. If an MRE package is bloated or expanded, don't eat it, just like a can of food with bulged ends.
Man i wish my friends would give me 8 cases of MRE's , lol.
Thanks for taking the time to do what you do, you should know there are alot of people that appreciate it! Ever thought of writing the exp dates on the end of those boxes so you can more readily see which to grab, like if someone else is to be doing the grabbing?
Sorry, but you're storing emergency supplies, that will probably not be used for years, in your living space. Why don't you build a storage shed that can be locked and store your camping/emergency supplies in there, so you're not having to live like a pack rat ? I agree with preparing, but the way you're living is crazy and is a real grind on your everyday life.
I love this thread about the chance of being away from home when the stuff hits. It's really not an issue to me. You plan, and try to figure for the WCS. Easy plans, like no less than half a tank of gas, bag of supplies in the trunk etc. You can't plan for everything, but you can be way, WAY ahead of the curve.
I have a 3 year stash that I rotate out as I go on my "field trips". I use dry ice to seal my longer term MREs in tubs in a bath of CO2 as the dry ice "melts". The CO2 has helped me extend my MREs effective life between 1-2 yrs if stored below ground level (basement?) cool & dry. It also prevents creepy crawlies from surviving any incursions into my stash.
@Hostiler60 - Koreys lives with his mom - my exwife. So most of his stuff is at their house.
How much room does a teenager need anyway? He has some clothes in the closet, a dresser for more clothes, a computer desk, the top bunk of this bunk bed, the center that holds his TV, game cube, playstation, shelving system next to the TV center, night stand next to the bed,,,,,,. So yea, I think Korey has plenty of room.
@survivalistboards: You tell 'em brother. Seriously...how much room does a kid need Hostiler60? That's a much larger closet than I have in my master bedroom...lol
@survivalistboards My point is you can be prepared as much as you think you are, and be out at a shopping mall or somewhere outside of your home and a disaster hits and none of the preparation matters. Kind of scary don't you think?
@tylertyler82 That's why most people who prepare carry some kind of kit in their car--somthing to help them get home where their long-term stuff is. Don't be scared--be prepared!
@tylertyler82: Actually, the preparation does pay off. Most people shop within a few square miles of their home. Where I live...I have a mall, grocery, gas all within 3 miles. Knowing I have stuff at home gives me a plan, a goal, and incentive to move my rear back to my house rather than stay where I'm at with my thumb in my rear wondering what the heck I'm going to do next.
@tylertyler82: I don't get your point either. Knowing he has a "base camp" with supplies, he has a goal (and I'm sure a plan) to get back home ASAP. Once there, he can at least hold up while he figures out what is going on without having to worry first about "what the hell am I going to do for food/water".
@tylertyler82: That is a good point. But knowing your options means that you can still get to your "base camp" even if it takes two hours on foot. While everyone else is freaking out and running around wondering what is going on and trying to ramsack stores for food and water, you can still focus on your goal of getting home. Those first few hours after a major event are critical and you don't want to be wasting them trying to gather items to try and survive for the next few days.
@tylertyler82 So what do you suggest he do? Put all of his supplies in a trailer and drag it around with him everywhere? Unless you're concerned about a nuke going off, you'll have time to get back to your place/shelter. I have a storm shelter here at home but that doesn't mean I race back here every time I hear thunder. Can't prepare for every scenario my man.
The dates you read are the 5 year inspection dates, not the expiration dates. The shelf life of MRE's are temperature dependent. According to test data I have read:
If stored at 80 deg constant temp. they will last for approx 3 years.
If stored at 60 deg constant temp. they will last for approx 10 years.
As long as the MRE's are not sitting in a CONNEX or shed in the sun temperature should not be a problem. I've eaten 20 year old MRE's with no problem. Chuck the cool-aide powder and enjoy the rest.
storing food inside of the house is never a good idea for long term storage, as the temperature is too high for optimum long term storage needs. you know that these MREs wont last more than 2 years max at the average house temps. so i hope you will eat all of these before xmass!? you did try to handle the humidity problem, and most people over look that, but you need to lower your temp for all those MREs to last longer.
@survivalistboards Yeah it seems to me that storing them in the house where the temp stays consistant would be better for them than outside where the temp could go from freezing to hot to the touch (like in a shed) would be. Also, do you know if its true that a person can store rice and beans for 25 years in 5 gallon buckets? I was told as long as its kept completely dry either one could even last longer!
@Rocdenindy - the color indicator gives you an idea of when your MREs should be tested. There is a red circle, with a red inner center. The closer the two colors of red are - the sooner you should test your MRE stocks..
@calixtesaint I buy the hanging dehumidifiers at Home Depot. The ones we've been getting are for clothes closets and have a little smell to them. But they work Great.
@filoIII At least 12 yrs. They were from 1991. They were the last outdated MREs I've eaten. The M&Ms bag had disintegrated to the same consistency as the cocoa-mix powder...actually, they were both of the SAME composition...
Sorry Corey............NO closet for you! HA HA........One of the things I love about your videos is that they are informative at the same time they seem so "normal American family".

@Spacestuff4me - Store MREs in a shed, where it can easily get over 100 degrees in the summer? Those MREs would cook themselves in the Texas heat.
Your probably looking at 110 degrees in the shed. At those temps, the MREs would spoil in a matter of months, instead of years.
