The RNLI has a Personal Injury Benefits scheme for crew members and other specified operational lifeboat station personnel who are injured on service or exercise. This is not an insurance policy, but is self-funded by the RNLI. We write to the Lifeboat Operations Mangers of all crew who have accidents to offer assistance if they require it. Loss of earnings up to a maximum set level are payable for up to two years, provided medical certificates and proof of earnings are provided.
Beyond two years, an accident disability allowance may be awarded at the discretion of the Trustees.
The RNLI can also provide assistance with medical treatment through our Employers' Liability providers, who offer a rehabilitation service to assist with helping them get back to work as soon as possible.
In the tragic event of loss of life whilst on service or exercise in the RNLI's lifeboats, the RNLI will, again at the discretion of the Trustees award a Dependents Pension to the spouse or partner and also for any dependant children, together with a lump sum payment.
As a charity, the RNLI has a duty to spend its supporters' money wisely, and the simulator is a great example of this. It's not practicable (or safe) to purposefully run an ALB aground or to frequently engage in multi-vessel search and rescue training scenarios around the coastline of the UK and Ireland. The simulator enable our crews to assess their response to these types of emergency in a safe environment, and the feedback we've had from them has been very positive.
the one thing about the modern RNLI that really scares me is the mind-set of "We have an organisation, so modern-mined that the Rnli has sold it's soul and those of every person going afloat: Read the Green Book: see just how much your life is worth.

Only the Cox'n has control of the boat.
The rest is playing games.
It is nice to play these games, but there can be be no substitute for experience.

the one problem with this is the fact that all the unit is stationary. its very weird to have the outside "moving" and your kit stood still lol
