One of my favorites from Talk Talk, but I don't think what we're listening to here is the actual performance; rather, it's the studio version dubbed over the live video.
Mark was a genius. And TT wanted to expand its horizons. Only real fans were interested in Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden. But die-hard fans that got it weren't enough to satisfy EMI.
The later, non-pop work is BRILLIANT. And I would give almost anything to have more from Mark. Come back to us.
OMG this is sooo embarrassing....making him go on stage with a song about his brother...Im shocked he agreed to this...I understand him SO MUCH about leaving this whole shit...
@i7fan yes, this is why this here is their last live performance ever. EMI needed a "single" to promote the album and this one was chosen because it is the "easiest" or least experimental. They did it, they even made a video of it, which M.H. totally regret. (I read it in an interview with him somewhere) And if you watch the interview before this performance, Mark refuses to talk about anything here. He just didnt want to jump through hoops for corporate music business executives any more.
@i7fan soon after this, litigations between the label and the band began..so this is why I dont like to watch this..because in my head it symbolizes the beginning of the end. But its just me :)

I don't think it's an intentional lip-sync, I believe the band did perform something with the little they had, and improvised around the original beautifully, in true Talk Talk fashion, but the producers probably dubbed over the original track, with clear reinforcement from TT's record company too...
A band that was way ahead of their time. I notice this trend in bands/artists that are not disturbed by external factors such as, doing what's required, following the trend of the day, aware but not affected by what's going on in the world. Once u know the truth of the matter, its interesting to know others' views on the same matter.
@rulinghabs Got the end of what Hollis wanted to do, I guess. Couldn't make music that was commercial enough for record companies. This song is so timeless.
Without reading through the 6 billion comments to check for repetition, can I just say that I don't think this is live. It sounds remarkably similar to the album track - especially in the vocals. Yeah?
Absolute genius. I miss Talk Talk so much- saw them live back in 1986 in Buffalo, NY and it was an amazing, emotional show. Perhaps Mark and Tim stopped when they realized they couldn't keep up the same intensity for future albums. The fact that they made the albums they did is amazing and a feat that many, many artists could never achieve. Indeed, they did invent a genre of music that has influenced many and I am thankful we have the music we do... and some extra solo work as well.
It's playback because it's practically impossible to play this song live as it was recorded in the album. In the album there's a lot of improvisation, mixes and takes..the guitar was modified to a peculiar tuning ,at the end it has a whole choir, etc etc. Mark Hollis never wanted to play live these song for the same reason but Emi made them for commercial ends
Regardless, they clearly must have been performing SOMETHING, even if it only vaguely resembled the original recording.
Seeing as SOE was never recorded again outside of the studio other than here, the audio track of this little performance is priceless for Talk Talk fans.
Unless (this only just occurred to me), Mark Hollis and co. actually mimed it while the TV execs played the real music over the speakers. In which case, forgive me.
But I think that Talk Talk really are playing a live version of this song and the original recording was only played back for people on Television.
I LOVE love love talk talk and Mark, but this is DEF not live. It is absolutely the LP version. This is a chart show of the past I guess? it's what was 'done' s'pose
this song is very nice ..but in some notes it falled in too string sound....the voice is wonderful ...He cut his hears ..IT's a pity ...I like him in passion look .here with a chemise a la porte is too sexy...
Wow man what a statement! You took the words right out of my mouth, well you didn't, but you said it better haha! "Spirit of Eden" and "Colo/ur of Spring" are just the most amazing sounds I know.
but the Beatles never abandoned their top 40 popular music sound. Talk Talk on the other hand completely abandoned mainstream music and went unconventional with their ambient jazz textured sound. Some truly beautiful music they made and even though I like their New Wave stuff too it's a shame they quit just as they were getting more interesting.
@brfts2001 I'd track down Mark Hollis's solo album from 1998 if you havent already, continues in very much the same vein as Talk Talk only using acoustic instrumentation.
@brfts2001 I'm a HUGE Talk Talk fan but I have to disagree with you on this one. The Beatles Revolver was pretty strange for the times. Especially Tomorrow Never Knows. Sgt Pepper got even weirder with string arrangements. The White Album has a few "commercial" tracks on it but a lot of it was too bluesy or just plain weird (Revolution 9, anyone) for radio play. Give the Beatles credit where credit is due. And then give Talk Talk credit for inventing Post Rock. Both brilliant.
@brfts2001 the beatles and talk talk were exactly the same...they followed themselves...they were true to themselves...these are not consciouis decisions on their part...they find out who they are along the way,and go with that...we don't know who we are in the future...you shouldn't say talk talk quit when they were getting more interesting...they've taken it to a level higher than anyone else, that doesn't mean they can go further...the solo album from mark was not that good....
As much as I love Talk Talk (and I'm a huge fan), this performance is hogwash. It's a lip sync. Hollis isn't even playing the guitar, he's too far away from the mic, and where are the keys and choir coming from? Too bad, because I'm sure it wasn't their decision - probably the TV show's.
uh . . . how does that explain the piano and choir? And I'm sorry, but if you listen to the recording it is *exactly* the same. Being a musician myself, I'm sorry to say - it's definitely a lip sync. It's an awesome song, and it's great to see them performing, but it's not live.
I remember buy this Album remembering Songs like " Talk Talk " and i thought " wtf is this ???... 3 Days and a several playthoughts later , this Album was the biggest Love to Musik ever.
I just wonder who was at fault. If you can lip read, maybe he is saying, these television producer freaks are the most disgusting philistines, making us lip sync .... Or they just dubbed over teh actual performance thinking it was being played so that sheep could Baaaaah along to it.
Mark just had enough of the Music business. The court case with EMI took all of the creative life out of him. When you look at the way Record companies work these day's it's suprising that any original new acts get a deal!
It's all about manufactured 'pop' they seem to have a production line with models or dancers they put in the studio and get some producer to 'play with their voices' and hey presto a 5 minute wonder!
Waht about Laughing Stock? and Mark didnt go crazy, he simply decided that he didnt want to make music anymore. He even released a very good self titled solo album in 1998, more proof Mark Hollis has a total grip on reality!
Just enjoy it for what it is. For any doubters, watch the "live from Montreux" DVD, they were incredible live. Its nice to see him with better hair at least! I wish I could identify what makes his vocals so emotive & moving. Its also wonderful from reading the comments that Talk Talk remains a great secret to those in the know.

cant help but listen to this song gets me thinking ,about everything every one,the good the bad only talk talk can do this to me good music never dies,
Saw them in 1983. I was 15. Went to see the Psychedelic Furs and came away changed for life. I was amazed, blown away, infected and a changed young man. Simply amazing still 24 years later. My kids love Talk Talk Saturday mornings! Mark Hollis where ever you are... God bless you!
Couldn't help posting. Sorry to see that is was lip-syncing, but nonetheless, a glimpse of real genius. That word gets thrown about too readily, and in the days of every review on iTunes giving 5 stars, this guy truly deserves it.
Absolutely amazing voice and sound of the band. I travelled to London in 94 just to buy all Talk Talk albums and videos ... I coulnd´t get them in our stores.
I still love the band - if only they would come back!
Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are both amazing masterpieces. But this playback performance of one of my favourites songs makes me sick. Shouldn't have done that Mark Hollis. Anyway I love this song.
Such a fantastic song. To think this was released as a single, don't know how well it did but i'm pretty sure it didn't chart. I have to ask the question are they miming, as it is exactly note for note they way it is on Spirit of Eden. Not saying that this makes it any less brilliant but just wondering
This is a timeless song that one can listen to year upon year. Their early popular work in It's My Life sounds somewhat dated, due to those synthesizers. I recall buying their last album Laughing Stock for one dollar in the delete bin in a record shop, and to this day their later work is as good as anything in my music collection.

Classic Talk Talk. Great voice. Never saw them live. Big mistake.

I would like to clarify that I realise this is not truly a 'live' performance, but he does have an incredibly beautiful voice.

Couldn't help posting. Sorry to see that is was lip-syncing, but nonetheless, a glimpse of real genius. That word gets thrown about too readily, and in the days of every review on iTunes giving 5 stars, this guy truly deserves it.

Thank you for posting. The best voice ever!
