  • Disis great song gutt

  • after all these years im still a fan, music with meaning

  • One of my favorites from Talk Talk, but I don't think what we're listening to here is the actual performance; rather, it's the studio version dubbed over the live video.

  • hey fuck, et is nederlands

  • thanks for posting!

  • Mark, we need you back. Now.

  • Epic.

    One of the best songs.

    Ever.

    V.O.I.D.MK20 (M.A)

  • Imagine being in that audience! Goosebumps!

  • Sublime.

  • Mark was a genius. And TT wanted to expand its horizons. Only real fans were interested in Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden. But die-hard fans that got it weren't enough to satisfy EMI.

The later, non-pop work is BRILLIANT. And I would give almost anything to have more from Mark. Come back to us.

  • OMG this is beautiful!

  • OMG this is sooo embarrassing....making him go on stage with a song about his brother...Im shocked he agreed to this...I understand him SO MUCH about leaving this whole shit...

  • @66femo He wouldnt have to if he didnt want to.

  • @i7fan yes, this is why this here is their last live performance ever. EMI needed a "single" to promote the album and this one was chosen because it is the "easiest" or least experimental. They did it, they even made a video of it, which M.H. totally regret. (I read it in an interview with him somewhere) And if you watch the interview before this performance, Mark refuses to talk about anything here. He just didnt want to jump through hoops for corporate music business executives any more.

  • @i7fan soon after this, litigations between the label and the band began..so this is why I dont like to watch this..because in my head it symbolizes the beginning of the end. But its just me :)

  • when you read all the comments on the net about mark hollis it all seems a bit sad like he's dead or something, he just decided to retire to be with his family, i would love to meet him one day, just to thank him for the pleasure he ( and lee and paul ) gave me through his / their music, good on ya mark ! thanks !!

  • ive got lifes what you make it on my phone, when it goes off people look and try to work it out who sings it,i told a young kid he said the phone company, i said yes ,didnt want to hurt his feelings ahhhh bless him ,he told me he had emiem on his phoned i said never mind youll learn one day the true meaning of music i said go back a few years to the 80s,he looked at me and said you must be really old,i bit my lip and went home,

  • I don't think it's an intentional lip-sync, I believe the band did perform something with the little they had, and improvised around the original beautifully, in true Talk Talk fashion, but the producers probably dubbed over the original track, with clear reinforcement from TT's record company too...

  • This is the ringsignal on my cellular phone.... :) I think that says it all....

  • This is obviously dubbed. Sad. I would love to hear some variation on this song.

  • the best song of all times..........

  • hauntingly beautiful

  • i really wish this was actually live and not lip sunk

  • @mindbodylightsound10

Me thinks the sound is out of synch with the clip by quite a bit.

  • A band that was way ahead of their time. I notice this trend in bands/artists that are not disturbed by external factors such as, doing what's required, following the trend of the day, aware but not affected by what's going on in the world. Once u know the truth of the matter, its interesting to know others' views on the same matter.

  • Lol, Countdown?? I thought you meant the TV quiz.

  • lip sync though.

  • Spirit, hear it.....

  • too good

  • Why di dthey break up?

  • @rulinghabs Got the end of what Hollis wanted to do, I guess. Couldn't make music that was commercial enough for record companies. This song is so timeless.

  • sends shivers...

  • sends shivers .....

  • Pamberjack - I think you're right.

  • so bloody amazing, loved em all these years and will never get fed up with them, who needs todays so called bands not me

  • naturally I jest. They spoke to me when I had problems: real band.

  • just had to post again, as this is so moving me today

  • talk talk are posing poo poo.

  • @tranmer3 why do you put down such a top band you show us you know nothing about music Talk Talk rock. now go get youself a comic and go watch tv.

  • Without reading through the 6 billion comments to check for repetition, can I just say that I don't think this is live. It sounds remarkably similar to the album track - especially in the vocals. Yeah?

  • what an incredible song this is. talk talk are one of the most under-rated bands in music history.

  • Absolute genius. I miss Talk Talk so much- saw them live back in 1986 in Buffalo, NY and it was an amazing, emotional show. Perhaps Mark and Tim stopped when they realized they couldn't keep up the same intensity for future albums. The fact that they made the albums they did is amazing and a feat that many, many artists could never achieve. Indeed, they did invent a genre of music that has influenced many and I am thankful we have the music we do... and some extra solo work as well.

  • good talk

  • good talk

  • we want talk talk back !!!!!!!

  • emozionante riascoltarla, fantastica voce Mark Hollis !!

  • etereo e fantastico Mark !!!

  • Short hair, no sunglasses but same awesome voice !

    Talk Talk hymn.

  • Mark Hollis come back, we need you, your voice is beautiful

  • its about time mark hollis/talk talk were in the music hall of fame.

  • todays music cannot reach this

  • shit who cares its talk talk we know they can do live, just great stuff,we need talk talk back to rid us of all of todays so called talent yes

  • this isnt live...such a shame...

  • It's playback because it's practically impossible to play this song live as it was recorded in the album. In the album there's a lot of improvisation, mixes and takes..the guitar was modified to a peculiar tuning ,at the end it has a whole choir, etc etc. Mark Hollis never wanted to play live these song for the same reason but Emi made them for commercial ends

  • @darkduende Indeed! everything in the 80s was playback on these programs, so the people on youtube should stop complain.

    Enjoy the song!

  • @darkduende

Regardless, they clearly must have been performing SOMETHING, even if it only vaguely resembled the original recording.

Seeing as SOE was never recorded again outside of the studio other than here, the audio track of this little performance is priceless for Talk Talk fans.

  • @darkduende

Unless (this only just occurred to me), Mark Hollis and co. actually mimed it while the TV execs played the real music over the speakers. In which case, forgive me.

But I think that Talk Talk really are playing a live version of this song and the original recording was only played back for people on Television.

  • lip-synching = BAD

Shame on these Dutch (I think it might be Dutch) TV producers overdubbing what a great live performance it must have been.

  • I agree but TOTP and all those shows were lipsinging in 80s and still.

  • But the problem is that they even overdubbed all the original instrumentation, it basically sounds exactly the same as the studio version.

  • @degree7 It's Dutch, but their probably just playbacking, Mark Hollis isn't even attempting to look like he's playing his guitar

  • I LOVE love love talk talk and Mark, but this is DEF not live. It is absolutely the LP version. This is a chart show of the past I guess? it's what was 'done' s'pose

  • this song is very nice ..but in some notes it falled in too string sound....the voice is wonderful ...He cut his hears ..IT's a pity ...I like him in passion look .here with a chemise a la porte is too sexy...

  • Classic

  • is this really live? sounds like a playback..

  • Hollis has such a beautiful live voice. Incredible.

  • Probably no other band in Modern history has pulled off such a drastic change in musical direction and gained fans almost 20 years after the fact.

  • Wow man what a statement! You took the words right out of my mouth, well you didn't, but you said it better haha! "Spirit of Eden" and "Colo/ur of Spring" are just the most amazing sounds I know.

    Further out than Floyd! :o)

  • what do u mean? what about the beatles? going from love me do to a day in the life in 4 years..

  • but the Beatles never abandoned their top 40 popular music sound. Talk Talk on the other hand completely abandoned mainstream music and went unconventional with their ambient jazz textured sound. Some truly beautiful music they made and even though I like their New Wave stuff too it's a shame they quit just as they were getting more interesting.

  • @brfts2001 I'd track down Mark Hollis's solo album from 1998 if you havent already, continues in very much the same vein as Talk Talk only using acoustic instrumentation.

  • @brfts2001 Exactly what Pink Floyd did. Both bands went on to make musically superior music.

  • @brfts2001 I'm a HUGE Talk Talk fan but I have to disagree with you on this one. The Beatles Revolver was pretty strange for the times. Especially Tomorrow Never Knows. Sgt Pepper got even weirder with string arrangements. The White Album has a few "commercial" tracks on it but a lot of it was too bluesy or just plain weird (Revolution 9, anyone) for radio play. Give the Beatles credit where credit is due. And then give Talk Talk credit for inventing Post Rock. Both brilliant.

  • @brfts2001 the beatles and talk talk were exactly the same...they followed themselves...they were true to themselves...these are not consciouis decisions on their part...they find out who they are along the way,and go with that...we don't know who we are in the future...you shouldn't say talk talk quit when they were getting more interesting...they've taken it to a level higher than anyone else, that doesn't mean they can go further...the solo album from mark was not that good....

  • @brfts2001

And I think this is the best of talk talk. Great band.

  • @darkmaides Yeah, that George Martin bloke was quite talented alright!

  • "Uh ... sorry love, what's that you were saying?"

  • And where is Mark???

    I need more Talk Talk!!!

  • It will be allright. I am mostly not a fan of lip sync, but it is another chance to get to see the Greatest band that ever was -perform.

Even with todays digital technology, it must be difficult to sync image and sound.

    Mark you're the Best

  • MARK...come back !!! We are waiting...

  • As much as I love Talk Talk (and I'm a huge fan), this performance is hogwash. It's a lip sync. Hollis isn't even playing the guitar, he's too far away from the mic, and where are the keys and choir coming from? Too bad, because I'm sure it wasn't their decision - probably the TV show's.

  • I think its just a bad sync between image and sound.

  • uh . . . how does that explain the piano and choir? And I'm sorry, but if you listen to the recording it is *exactly* the same. Being a musician myself, I'm sorry to say - it's definitely a lip sync. It's an awesome song, and it's great to see them performing, but it's not live.

  • why not stop after something like this becasue how would you top it

  • I remember buy this Album remembering Songs like " Talk Talk " and i thought " wtf is this ???... 3 Days and a several playthoughts later , this Album was the biggest Love to Musik ever.

  • This sounds VERY close to the recording. Live or not d'ya reckon?

  • I just wonder who was at fault. If you can lip read, maybe he is saying, these television producer freaks are the most disgusting philistines, making us lip sync .... Or they just dubbed over teh actual performance thinking it was being played so that sheep could Baaaaah along to it.

  • an incredible song. hollis's voice is amazing in this. what a superb band these were.

  • The best. I love this song...

  • This song is one of the finest songs ever,Mark Hollis is so underated as a musician,i wish they would reform.

  • the best band ever. especially the later stuff.

  • Mark just had enough of the Music business. The court case with EMI took all of the creative life out of him. When you look at the way Record companies work these day's it's suprising that any original new acts get a deal!

It's all about manufactured 'pop' they seem to have a production line with models or dancers they put in the studio and get some producer to 'play with their voices' and hey presto a 5 minute wonder!

    Rant Over! ;-)

  • Waht about Laughing Stock? and Mark didnt go crazy, he simply decided that he didnt want to make music anymore. He even released a very good self titled solo album in 1998, more proof Mark Hollis has a total grip on reality!

  • spirit of Talk Talk ...!!!!! my best song !!!

  • Just enjoy it for what it is. For any doubters, watch the "live from Montreux" DVD, they were incredible live. Its nice to see him with better hair at least! I wish I could identify what makes his vocals so emotive & moving. Its also wonderful from reading the comments that Talk Talk remains a great secret to those in the know.

  • PLAYBACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the best talk talk song

2 years after their album track "i don't believe in you"

  • Comment removed

  • This kind of reminds me of a Radiohead song...wonder if they were inspired by Talk Talk.

  • They were, Thom York is a fan

  • what a voice........really amazing

  • Terrific song, one of my favourite's from Talk Talk, full of brooding emotion and power, hauntingly beautiful. Thank you Talk Talk!

  • great band..great song.. all the albums were excellent..

  • The Color of Spring is best heard stoned!

  • Wonderful!!

  • talk talk=Mark Hollis=genius

  • awesome!!

  • ten bucks sez he HATED doing that performance.

  • I really wonder why always Radiohead has to pop up in comments on good bands/musicians on youtube. It's so fuckin annoying to say the least !!!! As if Radiohead is a sort of reference, dear god. All bands are different !!!

  • Beautifully crafted, full of depth, this track is without doubt one of the bands best. Play it LOUD!

  • Mark Hollis, what a great talent, I believe Radiohed can pay tribute to him, for each song the play...

  • wonderful Talk Talk.

    Mark Hollis is the best!!

  • indescribably beautiful... nothing is more heart-breaking than a broken man and God how clearly we feel his pain. thank you Mark for being brave enough to show the world.

  • this is the only video ive ever seen of him live without his glasses on

  • Mark Hollis est un grand musicien. Sublime fusion avec les autres artistes du groupe, pour 5 albums à chaque fois de mieux en mieux. Belle chanson. Merci.

  • by far one of Talk Talk's best songs.

  • They're miming. One of their best songs though.

  • 1988

  • what year was this

  • talk talk got better as time passed. ilove all their stuff. have every album. this particular song is beautiful. hollis's voice is incredible. talk talk were a superb band, greatly under-rated. wish they would re-form.

  • It's your opinion. I don't agree with you. Mark's always been the best. His solo album is wonderful.

  • His solo album is simply awesome!!!

  • Dalsu, you are a real dummy if you really mean what you say. Talk Talk were a great band and Mark Hollis a superb vocalist. Your cheap jibe is pretty wide of the mark, and that's being polite.

  • Then why art thou viewing this?

  • Nothing compares to Mark Hollis!

  • O K, the master has spoken!!!!

  • Mark Hollis is simply brilliant. Timeless.

His solo album is a revelation.

  • cant help but listen to this song gets me thinking ,about everything every one,the good the bad only talk talk can do this to me good music never dies,

  • Thanks a lot to simonmode for this video.

  • Such a genius and great voice!!!!!!!

  • Classic Talk Talk. Great voice. Never saw them live. Big mistake.

  • Saw them in 1983. I was 15. Went to see the Psychedelic Furs and came away changed for life. I was amazed, blown away, infected and a changed young man. Simply amazing still 24 years later. My kids love Talk Talk Saturday mornings! Mark Hollis where ever you are... God bless you!

  • still one of the best bands to come out of england pisses all over todays music, even my kids like talk talk teach em well

  • I would like to clarify that I realise this is not truly a 'live' performance, but he does have an incredibly beautiful voice.

  • stop deluding yourselves.

    its mimed.

  • Have you not heard him sing live? He sounds exactly the same as his recordings.

  • Mark Hollis is the greatest vocalist ever

  • Still sends a shiver down my spine, all these years on..;)

  • Couldn't help posting. Sorry to see that is was lip-syncing, but nonetheless, a glimpse of real genius. That word gets thrown about too readily, and in the days of every review on iTunes giving 5 stars, this guy truly deserves it.

  • magico aqui en mendoza argentina tienen un fan.victor.

  • What an amazing experience listening to this song. Incredible band - thanks for giving us what you did.

  • like a strange dream thats takes you out of your body very cool

  • Thank you simonmode so much for sharing this one with us Talk Talk fans. We miss you so much, Mark Hollis!

  • magic...

  • Absolutely amazing voice and sound of the band. I travelled to London in 94 just to buy all Talk Talk albums and videos ... I coulnd´t get them in our stores.

I still love the band - if only they would come back!

  • Talk Talk was my favourite group for many many years and Im so happy to see all the videos!Thank you!!

  • ahh the police, crowded house, or any other reformed band, i'd give it all up just to have talk talk back. come back guys

  • It's great to discover there are people out there who find this song brilliant and Mark Holli's voice disturbing.

  • Did you know this song would be timeless when you wrote it decades ago? You are amazing!!!!!

Please come out of hiding and grace us with your spirit. Because I believe in you!!!!!!

  • The man's an angel. Brilliant. Hair-raising.

  • The man is a genious. Where y'at, Mark?

    COME BACK

  • How can anyone sing so beautifully. How????

Come back Mark. I love you with my whole being.

  • On eof my fav. songs -Mark i love you for this great career

  • Fuckin mesmerized

  • Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are both amazing masterpieces. But this playback performance of one of my favourites songs makes me sick. Shouldn't have done that Mark Hollis. Anyway I love this song.

  • one of the records i want to be burried with...

  • Such a fantastic song. To think this was released as a single, don't know how well it did but i'm pretty sure it didn't chart. I have to ask the question are they miming, as it is exactly note for note they way it is on Spirit of Eden. Not saying that this makes it any less brilliant but just wondering

  • Thank you for posting this. Only heard of Talk Talk about 3 years ago. Seen very little of them until I found them on YouTube. Stunning stuff.

  • your sooooo lucky i can't find laughing stock anywhere

  • amazon has tons used available.

  • stunning. spirit of eden and laughing stock are two of the rare albums i'd class as flawless.

  • I completely agree with Boris. Laughing Stock is an incredible masterpeice, an incredibly timeless and soothing work.

  • Thank you for posting. The best voice ever!

  • This is a timeless song that one can listen to year upon year. Their early popular work in It's My Life sounds somewhat dated, due to those synthesizers. I recall buying their last album Laughing Stock for one dollar in the delete bin in a record shop, and to this day their later work is as good as anything in my music collection.

  • It's awesome, to see a human lay naked and broken before the world. Mark rules !

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome! Thanks so much for this...

  • heatbreaking...

  • Incredible! His voice is unbelievably beautiful. Thank you!

  • Eyes shut to the floor. This is the last Tv show for Talk Talk. Superb album but commercial breakdown.
