Wow I can see him now, sitting in at Whitey's Cocktail Lounge on Colerain Ave. in Cinci. musicians came there on Tuesday nights just to jam. Eddie Drake, Jr. Bennett, Rusty York all in a dive breaking a sweat.I spent a Christmas at one of Cal's families house there in the Queen City.
Not only was Cal an important player, he was also a really kool guy, he was alot of fun to be around, and a gentleman, he was a "blast from the past'..
Cal Collins grande chitarra. Suonare con il grande Benny devi avere swing a go go e Cal ne aveva tanto. Grande gusto , bel fraseggio , gran dinamica e grande pulizia con gli accordi. Fantastico !!!!!
Cal was a very friendly individual ......everybody in Nick Clooney's band liked him and he was as reliablle as daybreak. He accompanied Randy Crawford on this Live TV tune .... youtube (dot) com/watch?v=Yio8ai5F5lQ&feature=related.
hey cal collins is my grandfather his son is scott schwan and im scotts son nd if u dont believei wont care... my dad first met him wen he was about 20 in a hotel in fort wayne indiana(: this is the first time i got to hear him play and he is good(:
@bigpickle120 > Cal Collins is my grandma Betty Collins Wilkersons brother, he was a very cool cat, loads of fun at family reunions :) I am priviledge to have him, my father and my youngest cousin as musically inclined :)
I was taking lessons from Cal at a music store in Hamilton Ohio. One day I showed up and they said he had gone on the road with Benny Goodman. That recording was probably not too long after that.
I saw Cal too many times to count back in my days in Cincinnati. Love the chord solos and the down home sound in those lines. I'm still playing some licks I got from him. He's one of my favorites of all time.
It's funny at the beginning when that guy drops something and someone goes,"SHHHH!!!!!" and Cal Collins looks over like," I will end you with my awesome guitar skills!!!"...ya...
Cal Collins deserves his place as one of the great guitarists. Wonderful tasty, swing. His choice of guitar is irrelevant and kids who think a brand makes a difference to great players, just don't understand.
That "hipster DUFUS" on drums is Barrett Deems, who was one of the top dixieland/swing drummers of his time. He was once billed as "the world's fastest drummer." This cat played with Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Dorsey and Jack Teagarden to name a few. . .far from a "figgin' dork" with those sort of credits.
The song is called "Cherry." I got to play with Cal several times. He was a great guy, and obviously--as you can hear here-- a terrific, swinging player.. I think he had a beautiful, personal sound.
I noticed that, too. If you watch Wes Montgomery you'll see a similar thing, a lot of playing with just three left hand fingers, the fourth finger occasionally, and the thumb will grab a note or two every once in a while! I may not recommend these techniques to my students, but they sure work for those two guys!
Wow, I'm old and forgetful. If anyone could do this for me....it would be so GREAT! My favorite recording in the world is Cal doing "Sometimes I'm Happy". I think it's from the San Fransico album. If someone could post just the audio....please....I'd be a really happy guy.
Also if anyone noticed...I left out the "t" in guitar....I hope no one ran to the dictionary to figure out what a "guiar" was.
Oh yeah, Skyline Chili and Little Kings?....good times
I grew up in a beautiful world where Cal Collins was the local jazz guitarist and Millilo's and Richards Pizza were the norm. I picked up a guiar because of Cal Collins and two other guitarists Later in life I traveled all over in the world of music and realized, I'm spoiled. How lucky to have seen and met such a truly gifted and wonderful guy. I hope a million people see this. Thanks!!!!!
I agree. "Blues on My Mind" is one of my favorite jazz guitar albums of all time! Cal's take on "Dream a Little Dream of Me" just sends me. Why isn't this stuff available on CD?

How about Goodman just sittin' there looking disappointed after the tune's finished ?
He was notoriously a hard person to please.

Great guitar player, but unfortunately a Gretsch of this model is not the best suitable instrument for jazz.
One from 40s would have sounded mellower.
But Cal Collins was definitely excellent, i respect his choice of guitar. Maybe i don`t understand which tone he was after here.

Interesting rig: A Gretsch model more associated with Chet Atkins or rockabilly and an Ampeg amp. His tone is a bit too mid-rangey for me.

Just fantastic stuff. And this was the easy stuff for Collins, pimping for Goodman. Get "Blues on My Mind" and find out what he really could do!

Yeah, 'Blues on my mind' is a great album.
Where was this show filmed? TVP Kultura, sounds like something East European to me...
