  • en la algunas partes vas fuera de base ...

  • Don't forget to wash your arms? Do you have brain damage?.. :)

  • house music you play has limitations, mathematic ones, so it's impossible to be totally different dj- there are some rules...kids must know you don't tell.

  • 10 people like shit music and poo their pants in public sometimes

  • I heard Primary 1 - Princess in there.

  • haha ur the coolest dj tutor in this universe!!

  • Where you got that cap? :)

  • wats wrong with this dude?

    Nothing, he's a cool guy

  • brilliant teacher

  • 5:10-5:15!! I died laughing!!

  • Amen to organic mixes. No one, apart from from the kind of bloke who salivates over PERFECT mixes actually bothers to turn up to clubs to listen to "perfect mixing". They turn up to have a good time, a laugh, dance, enjoy themselves and feel they had a great night out. Which is why DJ's who are prepared to make mistakes but who are clearly having a laugh get more work than the anal retentive 'perfectionists' (who wonder why no one ever hires them).

  • LOVE THIS VID BUT

HOW MANY FUCKING DJ SETS DOES THIS GUY HAVE?

  • I use the sync button for the soul fact that it saves time. I spend less time lining up the songs and more time effecting the EQs and adding FX. But if the songs have a bpm difference of say 20bpm or so I will let them go out of sync but do it in a way that most people wouldn't notice.... Like let a lead with no kick come in while cutting the other lead and leaving the kick, then quickly chop over and bring it all in. But I often don't need the sync button because I press the play button in time

  • soo...wheres the tutorial?

  • LOL at the slight hesitation before he said "dont do drugs"

  • thanx man :)

  • i like what he says about the synch buttons and the off mixes. some tracks have to be a bit off to sound right. take BURNS-So Many Nights if you play it with diferent tracks youll find that it never quite sounds right while the beats are matched perfectly in a program like vdj. if you run it through a program you see the way the track is made it has to be off to be on if that makes sense. using a synch button will never get that.

though i use everything from decks to programs and controllers

  • Now I feel bad because I use the sync button on virtual dj. I can't afford real dj equipment and when I downloaded it I just found the button and didn't have headphones, I didn't know how else to do it. I am struggling but at least I am trying to learn to beat match myself. Its also hard to get the bpm's to match when you dont have a physical slider to move around. I tend to go too far at once.

  • you look like a chubby deadmau5 :D Dw, you are awesome!

  • Thanks for keeping it natural & organic mixes. Well said! Thanks a lot! No mistakes is a Broken Record Label, Right on, Welcome to my world. What about getting your remixes approved, absolutely no mistake it tolerated. Both ways work . Keep on having fun!~ The awesomeness of unique entities. The only thing that really makes me wonder is how you so dynamically keep up with all these technologies advancements. Must be really cool.

  • He's a great teacher & his videos are very helpful

  • He looks like deadmau5 0.0

  • why does he look like on drugs

  • the correct answer to how long a piece of string is MEASURE IT YOURSELF :)

  • Good video man!!!! Regards from Brazil.

  • i like how you could get it on beat and everything without even using headphones

  • this is my ngga right here...

  • Jonathan, concerning your comment about cheating 06:27 because some DJ's are using a software to mix songs, your comment goes against what you were showing in your earlier video " DJ Tutorial How to mix an Acapella into a beat." . In that video you had posted some sheets stating "Real DJ's plays with Music".

For me whatever you are using to mix songs, you are still creating an art form whatever system or instrument you are using.

  • if the crowd is feeling the music as much as you are, then the mixing the dj is doing is fantastic

  • Dude this guy is so god damn brilliant, it's retarded. Fucking swear I was watching this guy do reviews on the Traktor Kontrol s4 for like months

  • hey dude im a big fan of yours!

  • Feel the music.. That's how you know how long to keep a track in the mix =)

  • LOL! Still loving the jokes in your videos, Jonathan! Keep it up :)

  • i want to start mixing techno and trance , do you have any reccomendations of some good music to start with? . basically like the essential songs when mixing that type of music

  • Got wax!!

  • Got wax!! This is emabrasing

  • Got wax!! This is embarrasing

  • How about mixing one in for two bars at the break then take out the other track at the end of the break.THEN mix the 1st back in and take the 2nd one out. Then go back to the break and do it again and the 2nd time take out the 1st track definitively. The possiblities are endless.

  • SO DO OR DONT DO DRUGS?

  • u gotta do drugs!! lol u cant be that mad!!! great video again.............

  • I agree, you can definitely tell the difference between a Live DJ mix and a mix made on a computer using studio tricks.

  • To all who have aimed comments at me :

If you think it doesnt matter about beatmatching manually, because 'nobody in a crowd cares what the dj does with a mixer' - you are obviously playing in commercial clubs where even the music does not matter, the music is shit and the dj is shit simple.

As for the windmills and flour anecdote, what the fcuk are you on about. Making flour is not done to entertain people you numpty. You are fools who do not understand what it means to be a dj.

  • Lol

  • oh Im in love with you, Im really learning

  • When I first started Djing I thought beat matching was actually tempo matching. I got so good at matching the tempos of songs with the frequency lever that I could match the tempos of all kinds of music on the fly real quick. But I did'nt realize I wasn't actually beat matching. Then I met some Djs that beat matched and there music was almost exactly the same tempo already. They almost didn't even touch the frequency lever. And they said I sucked cuz I couldn't beat match like them. Yeah F right

  • I found it!! Second track is called "Primary 1 - Princess (MJ Cole Remix)"

  • U sure the name of the second tune is correct, I cant find it ANYWHERE! and i NEED it ha!!

  • Nice toones used in this one!

  • You're a trip!!!

  • Would be easier to use the loop function!

  • u r the funniest how to uploader on youtube :D

ur gonna hurt ur back by filmin like that D:

  • Lickable clink haha :D nice video anyway!

  • What mixer is that? great vid btw!

  • @TheDirtySounds

    reloop IQ 2

  • @superbuny007 Great mixer by the way!

  • @jminic

I don't know, it looks very well,

some time ago I wanted to buy it, but I bought a four channel mixer

  • Great video as always!

  • Good call about beat sync anyone can do it...vinyl for the win.....

  • wow dont do drugs, i fkn love u

  • 5 ppl use autosync

  • @streetz23

aktualy 6 but i still liked the video, OOO

  • i wonder if 100-200 years from now, if djs will still be beatmatching at all......

  • loved you 2 different cd players

  • @djscottdog1 Alright mate. Congrats on winning them headphones!! Just saw that phase1 vid a few minutes ago. Peace out...DJTrueSoul.

  • @truesouljs thanks got lucky i gess , it make my day, your an-amazing dj btw , skills i will try and gain in time and and i love you hummer , peace out . william

  • Man, thanks for all the videos in the 2010, now i can call my self a DJ this 2011 thanks to you and your tutorials, i love you, thanks alot!

  • Funny thing that you want our opinions, because I am a VDJ guy. I may only have version 5.2, but it works! But yes, I believe that when a mix is done, for a professional gig, like a HUGE party or some conference, it is good to have a fairly smooth mix, but when it comes to small parties at my place, the mixing can get really bad, especially when you can't be in front of the set the whole time. I agree completely that having a slight offbeat mix is perfectly OK & shows that you're not a total.*..

  • Bigups ellaskins, for another great video.

Good advice and good attitude fella !

    Happy new year :-)

  • beat sync , loses that real mix flavour ,two many mixes to clean ,what happen to them long blends in older mixers, now it lasts a second

  • I agree the beat matching is a must for a live feel although I get sick of screwing up a mix tape on the last record.... GEEZUS!!! I still think vinyl is where it's at but since everyone is getting MP3 for cheap or free these days it is a dying breed.

  • Here is my view on beat sync features... Take photography, old skool photographers will argue that photoshop is cheating, yet it also allows for further digital manipulation that wasn't possible before. Is this good or bad? Sync in Traktor Scratch can allow for say a 3 deck mix, then you think a sample would sound brilliant over the top or dropped at certain breaks. Sticking this into sync and concentrating on the 3 deck mix can only allow for more things to be done... enhancing the creativity.

  • @deanosabbathfan are they earthed?

  • @ellaskins also jonathan the buzz really increases when you touch the arm of the turntable!!!! its really annoying!!!

  • @deanosabbathfan

    HI,

I'm don't know much about vinyl, but maybe you need a new needle?

  • @ellaskins j yeah they are all attached fine like i said before with the previous set up there was none at all???????im confused!!

  • @djspinart really dont know?? its only a numark m1 two channel mixer! ?????

  • What you said about organic mixes and that virtual DJ can be considered cheating are truth. Words from a god!

  • @beatjugglez I agree 100% with your comment. If you use the sync to have more time to do other "tricks" than no-one can say you're not a DJ. When I play sometimes I use it sometimes I don't to make things more interesting. I use Traktor with cdjs btw.

  • I want see how you mix hip hop....

  • @ellaskins hey i think you should make a video in regards to people using the "sync" button in dj software, simply to start a discussion about it. we all know its becoming an issue of topic as of late. i think many people would value your opinion about it, as well as the opinion of other djs, no matter what the experience level. thanks for the vids, keep up the good work :)

  • about the sync button issue. people who use the sync button, imo, are using it for one of two reasons. number one being that they are too lazy to learn how to beat match wich is obviously a bad thing, but the other reason is it can free your hands to many things such as using multiple effects playing with loops, or adding even more tracks to a mix. all of these are goodthings that make a mix completely original and custom to the dj who is mixing. wich is what jonathan suggests. lets talkabout it

  • my friend you are slightly unhinged but you know what your on bout..fair play to ya.I used to be very fond of using the sync on Virtual DJ but after listening to you i will go back to the old way of working which i think is much more real and natural...thanks

  • Hey John, MoD here, Big ups from Canada

I will say I use VDJ, I use the sync button, but only BEFORE i mix the tracks, to get the BPM the same. The timing and everything is all my. I hit play with the button on my laptop, then I use the Nudge ability to push it a little bit this way, a little bit that way, till it sounds right. I hate people who use the sync button to bring their tracks together!

I'll admit, not the best way to do it, but it's using the sync button to the least of its ability.

  • @OMGcybr No it's not wierd, that means you're willing to learn.

  • I watched over 100 of your videos, even though I don't have decks. Is that weird? I plan on getting some someday though. :P

  • @OMGCybr I don't have a girlfriend, yet i watch porn, so i don't see a problem myself.

  • @ellaskins the only issue I find is, I like to chop, cut and do all the other stuff that most "new" DJs are "scared" to do and you get comments like can you leave the track alone. I think most youngsters are too used to these cheesy compilations and don't appriciate the "oldskool" style mixing. Comments on this please, what do you think?

  • @ellaskins you're spot on in regards of "raw" mixing. A perfect example is one of my fave DJs, DJ Pilgrim, his mixing is as raw as they come, rough as guts but more enjoyable than any Ministry Annual out there...

  • It's True, It's True, It's True......

  • Your just right. To me a DJ that uses some sync mix thing, its ok but keep it raw & the feeling you get when you get it right is like a footballer scoring a goal, rugby player scoring a try or a golfer getting a hole-in-one. Nothing beats it. Makes your mixes your own & they are different every time. Happy new year dude. Keep up the great videos.

  • ¥T

  • most of the time people do not even notice when it goes a little off beat! you are right man! keep the organic feeling alive!

  • i think the best way to learn how to mix is from vinyl. because you have nothing to make mixing easyer so you will become a better dj. a vinyl dj could learn to mix digitally very quickly. but if you got a digital dj to mix on vinyl i think they would find it a lot harder because they wont have all the gadgets they rely on using like bpm counters and beat sync.

  • fuck auto mix !!! you can talk bollocks to yourself untill your blue in the face to make yourself feel better about no being able to mix. if you cant don't give in and get some shite program and do it for you.

JUST PRACTICE AND ENJOY and it will come.

happy new year one and all :)

  • thanks j, you just opened my eyes once again for the things that really matter! keep up the good work!

  • You're awesome.

  • your fucking nuts ! you remind me of some guy i know who just trances out constantly and in his spare time Dj's your awesome ! keep it up man and i hope to see you mixing yourself soon live if you ever get round to making it :D

  • hi jonathan great video as usual! got a real problem with my set up ive got my mixer and turtables set up through my hi fi stack with its speakers!! used the same hi fi years ago with my technics 1210s and all worked excellent, just got new turntables and mixer and theres a horrible buzzing coming through the speakers really dont know what to do??????????? wondered if you could help ?? thanks alot

  • @deanosabbathfan r the earth cables atached to the mixer ok?

    j

  • @ellaskins Hey jonathan. Im watching all youre vids about beatmatching and mixing and all that stuff but i dont even got a mixer/decks i only got vdj which is crap xD I want to get a nice kit soon and i asked around and some people advised me a Xone 22 + 2 x cdj400.How do you think about this? and got any tips so i can practice with VDJ before i have my real kit? Thanks!

  • @deanosabbathfan Does the new mixer have phono pre-amps?

  • @deanosabbathfan Usually a buzzing means there is EF interfering with the analog audio signal being sent on your audio cords. The culprit is almost ALWAYS power cords. Make sure all audio cords don't overlap anywhere with power cords. I can explain the physics, but basically it means power cords add awful hissing/buzzing to audio cords they overlap with.

  • @deanosabbathfan you need to attach the earth cables, that's a very common problem so you don't need to worry :)

  • I think what he and many of the old school DJs are trying to get across is that beatmatching is such a huge part of DJing as a whole and if you never do it yourself and always rely on the computers to do it you fall out of touch a bit. The off beat mix he does there does actually sound quite good, makes the DJ feel more alive which is always a nice feeling to dance to. I personally pretty much always use beat sync but still love practicing without it on my own.

  • personally i think it shouldn't matter how you do it, with what, whether vinyl, cd, computer, licking a piece of fine grained sanpaper, whatever it doesn't matter. If it makes a good sound and people drop to it then it doesn't matter and as for beatmatch and autosync, you dont have to use it but if you do then it can free up some of your concentration to make the mix even better so think about that one!

  • Happy New Year :D

  • Pioneer DJM 400 or the Reloop IQ 2 ? Which one do you think is better ?

  • mix with sync is very boring

  • I used to watch this for tutorial purposes.. Now i just watch it for the pure fact that Your hilarious. LOL.

  • Bloody awesome video!!! Quality stuff. =D

  • is he on drugs on the beggining?

  • Your the Best!!! Happy New Years, From New York City

  • i use the sync button and i can beatmatch not much difference to me, if your a good DJ you can mix and make it sound great regardless...

  • Funny to see the 1000 next to the KAM cd player.

  • Jonathan, you are brilliant. Period!

  • I have that mixer too :)

Its the reelop iq.2+ isnt it?

    Best Regards

  • I started using Traktor Pro about a year ago, however I have been beatmatching manually for 15 yrs. Do I think SYNC is cheating? NO! It just gives me time to do other things play with effects, loops or using a 3rd deck for scratching / samples. To me, my performance is tighter, has better flow & using the Cue point I can build using the best parts of the tracks. It also gives u time to deal with pissed up punters making requests

Is a carpenter a proper carpenter if he uses an electric saw ?

  • I love your thinking :D

  • J I am old skool in that I learnt to mix on vinyl and beat counters were for loosers. However, I also appreciate that modern DJ's can use four or more virtual decks and use sample and loops to remix and produce music on the fly etc. they use sync function all the time as they just don't have the time to do it by ear.

  • @foulmouthc1

check out Delimentry and tell me that :D 4 real decks cdj 1000s all mashed up nicley without a sync button and most of the time without a laptop in sight

  • you re the best !

  • I use the Sync button on VDJ, but scarcely. It's SOUNDS like a good idea, but 90% of the time I use it, it's not completely on beat. I still have to fine tune the tempo or use pitch bending a tiny bit.

I agree with what Norway4everAndEver said, we mix for the CROWD. We have to try and make everything sound good for THEM. Even if it's songs/genres we don't like. (lol YMCA John)

  • for beat matching i just sync the grid (in traktor) and tap sync because its not all about being a "real" dj (because no one cares) its about being a good dj

  • @withaspoon94 Spot on. Do what you need to do to keep the crowd happy. When I see the likes of Pete Tong using Traktor Pro and an X1 controller, I think .... "Thats good enough for me!"

  • Most large predictors that would eat you in the Atlantic usually hunt during the early morning hours :-)

  • Have you ever mixed with serato or any other dj softwares or would you rather use cds and vinyl?

  • lol Happy 2011!!! d[-_-]b

  • Check out the brief intro to my digital djing / controllerism tutorials coming very soon:)

  • Man, I could not agree with you more!!!! I have seen too many DJ's out there want to focus on "getting it right", whereas you should bring the organic feel to it, that is, if you are really trying to show off your artistic style. I believe it is essential to be self dependant, I use Serato, and also have Traktor, and as a Serato user, I like that it allows me to adjust things on the fly, rather than push a button, and make it automatic...

This is another awesome video mate!!! Cheers!

  • Personally I think a lot of it also depends on the particular tracks you are mixing, their style and also what point you are at in your set. Certain genres of electronic music are more conducive for long blends whilst others might require quick cuts.

Key matching is always a help when doing long blends as you can push the envelope but all in all if it sounds good and has the right energy for that particular moment then mix it:)

  • if it sounds perfect then it is perfect...

  • Wow most the time i mix with like a phase or two...

  • lolllllllll

  • when you brought in the second track, it sounded amazing!

  • This is why i cover the bpm display in my software ;)

  • HOW FAR IS UP?

  • I dunno i prefer to have it match enough that it feels smooth. Noone wants to have to figure out what beat to dance too if its all over the place. Now if there is a method to the madness and its still dance-able then, by all means, have at it. Anything to mix it up is good though.

  • totally agree its like going to see a band live and the singer is miming. your still seeing them live in theory but its not really them doing the work

  • MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • on the topic of the whole beatmatching thingy.

Personaly i prefer clicking the sync button mainly because it gives me more time to do a better mix for the audince. Most of them doesnt even know whats what. So you just gotta ask yourself. Do you mix for the crowd? or do you mix to "impress" yourself in just one task of the mixing? Dont forget that beatmaching is just one little part of the whole world of mixing. Sometimes i feel like the old school djs feels "threatened" by the new digital djs.

  • @Norway4everAndEver i'm with you there. i use sync sometimes because when i mix i often give myself about 10 seconds to get the next track (random) and get it mixing in so i can keep the beat flowing if the crowd is good at the moment but i useally just use the pitch and see if that works and sometimes like J said go offbeat but in a good sounding way

  • @Norway4everAndEver that's SO right!

if you choose between trying to beatmatch your 2 songs during like half a minute or so, or you play with your fx and get the crowd go crazy, my choise is made quickly!

Of course: computers always crash (even apple's do) so that's the other side of the medal.

But, guys like Atomix (creators of VDJ) don't create a program like that because they know that its worse than 'manualy' synqing, and anyway, if it's possible, why not use it?

  • @Norway4everAndEver

no not threatened belive me :D old school DJs just feel that the newbies should lurn there trade from scratch excuse the pun to help them if you cant beat count and cant beat match then the basic skills arnt there to mix ie you still need to know your basics to bring a tune in off time to know when the change is coming to start or drop the mix by counting the bars/beats the sync button just maches the beats for you it dosent drop that perfect transition ............

  • @Norway4everAndEver

....Continued also the sync button will not will not beat match a live bands record and some of the dance clasics were recorded live with a drummer that will shift beats over time or on the intros clasic example cool and the gang celebration the timing shifts all over the intro if you can beat match then you can shift the timing to compensate hence the old schoole DJs try and teach this to help newbies not because we are threatened theres more to DJing than just club work

  • @Norway4everAndEver If you dont beatmatch manually, how can you call yourself a dj. DJ=Disc Jockey, disc as in physical medium with music on, jockey as in riding and controlling. Pressing auto sync/auto beatmatch is not 'dj-ing' is it. Adding effects and loops to a pre-matched playlist of mp3's does not require any skill at all, think on pal....

  • @DjNikGnashers yeah but as he said, do you want to mix for the crowd or impress yourself? No one really know what you press on that mixer, so who really care?

  • @DjNikGnashers okay, think of it this way. in the old days people used windmills to grind their corn to make flour. Now they got machines that does it for them. Are they still farmers? they do deliver the same flour. the only difference the cutsomer notice is that the flour from the machines is cleaner.

    welcome to 2011

  • @Norway4everAndEver , agree, but yrs ago there where no nasty chemicals in the flour now there is all sorts of sh*t added!

    j

  • @ellaskins what a comeback, haha. i guess we have to agree to disagree :)

  • @DjNikGnashers PING! I think your pot noodle is ready.

  • String = 1.6cm

    London walk = 3.8hrs

    Atlantic float = 20 sec

JK...one thing I am finding with my mixing progression is that my mixes are getting longer and I am feeling more comfortable in the mix, taking my time to do what I want with the tracks I am mixing. Mix as its comfortable for you, what feel rights for you. Everyone has there own mixing style, its comes with time and grows with yoru ability behind the decks.

    respect,

    dj deanthomas

  • @milan118 do not buy djx750, because its piece of crap, i like more pioneer because they are the best, if you cant afford for new items, why dont u get preowed ones from ebay or gumtree, they are pritty cheap, and look like brand new, i bought cdj 400 for 300 pounds 3 month old and they look brand new, im getting djm 800 on january 24 lol my birthday, will check out ur channel if you like electro house check out my mixes and tracks :)

  • Video DJ mixing are popular now. Why don't you do a video on Serato Video SL that allows music video mixing that never possible with traditional deck.

  • lol dude u'r tottally on xtc

  • great video made me lol and inspired

  • ellaskins i am just wondering but do you produce your music? please reply thanks bro

  • @DJT3K9ine hope to get abelton live soon

    xx

    j

  • Another wacky yet outstanding video, happy new years jono!

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with you beatsync comment. "Real DJ's" whatever that means, should never use beatsync, you just become an expensive jukebox.

  • i use virtual DJ but i used a paper to cover the BPM so i actually do the mix : ) takes time and practice and screw up but i am only human : D
