With each star you got on the Haunted House, the missions became much more difficult, i lost some lives there.

Both the piano and the huge eye in the last mission nearly made me crap my pants..

I remember the very first time I ever played this game. When I went into the room with the piano for the first time, I honestly yelled out because it scared me so much. And I've met a bunch of other people that got the crap scared out of them when they saw it! It's just one of those things that you wouldn't think it would be that scary, but somehow it is!

I think I know why,

Ghost are impossible to see (exept big boos in Super Mario) because they are spirits that move through the air. Some of them have unfinish bisness on earth (litterly) so they scare some people by doing crazy things like moving objects, playing the piano, make unidentify sounds, and anything else you can think of.
