  • I LUV IT IF SHE CAN TELL ME OR WHISPER TO ME WHERE HER "SPOT" IS.....LOL...BUT I LUV HER...R.I.P.

  • why does she do her eyes like that? It scares me....

  • @Goin2Back I think her eyes are so sexy.

  • I love this woman to death but does anyone notice that she may be tweaking during these interviews, i.e., coke, specifically, the eyes widening?

  • @trytobefly i noticed. she definitely had a dangerous love affair with blow, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. regardless, R.I.P. phyllis you were one of the best.

  • @trytobefly yeah that was scary

  • @trytobefly i noticed the same thing and wondered what that was!

  • she says it's sad because she is just jealous of petite short women because they are dainty and prettier.

  • WHAT happened at 2:46? She was obviously, rudely interrupted but there was more. Something was obviously edited out.

  • WOMAN HD SOME ISSUES

  • There are many beautiful women at 6'' and over - Phyllis, Vanessa Redgrave, Uma Thurman to name a few---- they are more than women, they are goddesses!

  • I'm devastated by her loss, not ony because of Phyllis herself, but because i can't even think of somebody who was this eloquent and thoughtful. A true inspiration.

  • @nenaphillips I do not think it is anything wrong with saying that she had a nice figure when you are a woman too. If she was here, she may have thought you were just giving her an innocent complement.

  • I remember hearding about her death on the radio, and I actually pulled over on the road, and sat there is shock. She was a wonderful talent. She is truly missed. I'm still a fan.

  • And another thing. Fuck the tall thing. Who cares. She's taller than me but I would have been waxing that ass. I would have her legs wrapped all around me. Who cares about having some moron who's 6'5". That's what I think, anyways. She was a beautiful woman.

  • I know why she was depressed. Her thumb was exercising instead of those lips. What a shame those beautiful lips went to waste.

  • Don't sleep on "Gonna Make Changes!" That song is a true anthem for our people.

  • she was so intelligent, eloquent, chic and she had a great head on her shoulders, I just wish she had the Joy of the Lord in her life that would have kept her! what a loss!!

  • she was such a sweetheart! I just hate how malicious darkness is in it's attack on the meek

  • When i watch these interviews of her....I see such a classy, intelligent, confident woman. It just shows you how people can make ppl believe they are soo happy even when they have alot going on...however she always noted how she just couldnt get it right with her personal life...you were so talented and special ...just so sad you could not reach that peace within urself ...R.I.P. queen...u are not forgotten at all...u can never be or replaced.

  • Look at how phyllis hyman does her eyes at the 3:00 mark, lol I remember meeting this guy in manhattan and my eyes would do the same exact thing , scared the shit out of him lol guess its a eye reflex

  • A timeless wonder. The youth of today need to hear her and see what real music sounds like, what real women look like. Was blessed to see her in person many times. She'd take yout breath away. What a loss. "BJ" & 40 Plus

  • @silverfrazier59 what does that stand for?

  • Comment removed

  • she had beautiful eyes

  • phyllis is awesome beyonce boooooo she str8 but not this str8

  • @Eminemwify891 Beyonce likes to be half-dressed. I do not like that. I have never seen Phyllis dressed that way, which makes me have high regards for Phyllis.

  • very captivating woman, very intelligent.

  • she exudes a cool calm eloquence and she makes you want to to ask her more - a very engaging personality

  • Someone said that MJ's statement to Phyllis made her cry. She was a very sensitive person despite her capacity to be somewhat abrasive.

  • ICON

  • she was sooooooo BEAUTIFUL...as a kid this what I grew up on..grace in your face...(she is FINE and a "FUNNY GIRL"...i always loved women with humor). I wish she was still here...

  • do ya'll know she killed herself.sad so talented and so unloved...God bless her

  • Her suicide note read in part:

"I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you."[2]

--- STOP COMPARING BEYONCE TO EVERY SINGER IM TIRED OF IT DA SHIT IS GETTING OLD FAST----

  • @MSBENZ24 I think the comparison comes in to play when you look at how famous and wealthy Beyonce and Rhianna have become without a pinky amount of talent compared to Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson and a few other GREATS. Phyllis was by no means as financially blessed. But talent, it was truly a gift from GOD.

  • SHE IS SO PRETTY. SHE'S A LADY. GOSH I WISH THE STUDIOS WOULD MAKE BEYONCE, RIHANNA AND THEM GIRLS TAKE SOME LESSON FROM HER. VOCALLY AND HOW TO CARRY THEMSELVES

  • @princeadore85 I think the comparison comes in to play when you look at how famous and wealthy Beyonce and Rhianna have become without a pinky amount of talent compared to Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson and a few other GREATS. Phyllis was by no means as financially blessed. But talent, it was truly a gift from GOD.

  • Man I'm 6'2" and I would not have had a problem approachin' Phyllis Hyman. Ain't nothin' intimidatin' about a tall woman to me. If anything, the height makes them even more sexy.

  • @MegaManZeroV1 I feel you on that...I'm only 5'7 & wouldn't have had a problem approaching Phyllis...she was truly sexy

  • @MegaManZeroV1 Me either. I'm 6'3. I'd love to have been with Phyllis

  • @MegaManZeroV1 Hey after seeing interviews about her I kept thinking the same thing, i'm 6'2 or or 6'3 I would not have a problem approaching Phyllis Hyman either. She had that total package, voice+class+articulation+beauty!

  • LMAO, I can see her with a machete!!!

  • 4:36-5:42 section is what I wish these foolish ass kids with American Idol dreams would listen to!!

  • Just like with other black entertainers who left us too soon she is sorely missing today. Especially with the crap that passes for music these days!!

  • for all who may be depressed, just give it time.before you take that drink, that narcotic ask yourself would GOD be pleased with my choice....I`ve been there and survived

  • I love phyllis hyman,My favorite would have 2 be "As You Are". Doe's anyone know why she doe's that with her eyes? I noticed she doe's it in a lot of interviews.

  • hers eyes are tired duh

  • Riding the Tiger, and You know how to love me, are my favorites!

  • She hated riding the tiger lol

  • @Futureindiestar16 You weren't to mention that song around her. She tought it was a "gimmick" (listen to Johnny Gill's latest hit). I thought her voice and the bass line in that song were a perfect match though.

  • Phyllis was a grand diva!!!

  • somewhere in my lifetime,,, is the best song

  • u must be old

  • I'm in my mid-twenties, and I don't really remember much about Phyllis Hyman. I know that Mary J. Blige once said that she looked up to Phyllis Hyman.

Since I've had the chance to listen to some of her songs and see her in a few interviews like this one, I think she was fabulous! Intelligent, articulate, vivacious, funny, what a loss. I wish that someone could have stopped her from taking her own life, it's so tragic. I wonder what she would think about the artists of today like Beyonce??

  • @sweetscorp, I am impressed that you took the time to get to know Phyllis Hyman. My favorite song by her is "You know how to love me"

Check her out on Face book too, for more info!!

  • @sweetscorp Yes. People should have prevented her after they knew she had badly poisoned herself before. However, they must have thought that she would not poison herself again. Because after being revived from the first poisoning, Phyllis expressed that she was happy she did not die.

  • When I Give My Love (this time) is one of my favorites too.

  • I LOVE HER STYLE!! she knows what shes talking about!

  • Wow, I have watched parts 1, 2, & 3 and Miss Hyman is quite well spoken. It makes me so sad that she felt such despair in her life although she freely share her gift with world.

Rest in Peace Phyllis and I hope you indeed did find peace.

  • Aside from being SOOOOoooo Talented, she was such an Articulate, Intelligent, Classy, Sophisticated LADY. May she rest in total peace and tranquility.

  • If she's talking about who I think she is, I ALWAYS thought he was an asshole.

  • Some would say that Phyllis didn't love herself, and that is why she commited suicide. In my opinion I believe that when she was told that she had a Dis-ease that would be with her forever with no hope of change, may have contributed to her decision, because Phyllis was IN made it a point to be IN control of everything in her life, so to tell her that there was something she COULDN'T control she wasn't gonna have. She was gonna go out her way on her terms.

  • Well Phyllis, I'm 5'7 and I like my women at least my height or taller. You are fine as gold to me. Forget MJ, he didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

  • Ive heard A LOT of things about Phyllis over the years. One of them being, that she was terminally cranky. But in any interview that Ive seen of her, she was always a class act. I love a lot of chick singers and overall I cant say that anyone resonates with me the way Phyllis does. I cant explain it....her songs take me right back to what my life was like as a kid growing up in Wash, DC...my childhood is linked to her music, til the day I die.

  • She was asked on what her favorite song that she made was ? Iam very surprised she never said " You know how to love me ' --which came out in '79' , that song is so powerfully beautiful , just like her .

  • Read, "The Strength of A Woman; The Phyllis Hyman Story."

She had several opportunities. She could have been "Shug" in the Color Purple, She could have done Vegas with Bill Cosby and could have been up there with Whitney Houston because of Clive Davis.

She performed in "Sophisticated Ladies" and was great but because of issues backstage, she wasn't invited back.

With drug issues, low self esteem & other problems; it got in the way of her success.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs Wow! I would like it, if you would email me the other things you have heard about Phyllis. If you do not mind.

  • Raven-Symone from the Cosby Show looks like her.

  • Ghetto fab Beyonce can't touch this classy, confident, talented icon; and don't mention signing. Music has been dumb down for people like Beyonce.

  • @sk84lif3everydayCO beyounce leaves nothing to the imagination. She grinds and opens her legs as wide as she can . But this lady, ah this is class!

  • @sk84lif3everydayCO I so much agree with you. Thank God someone said it. Thank you.

  • @sk84lif3everydayCO I dont not like beyonce,..i take that back, its not that i dont like her..cause i have to admit that she is the baddest female entertainer out right now, but im tired of her ass...shes over exsposed. However, why do we keep bringing her up out of no where? the more we bring up her name..the more attention she gets. lets stop bringing up the bitche's name, especially when whatching video's that has nothing to do with her.

  • @barbarasboi After watching her it looks like Beyonce may be modeled after her

  • @sk84lif3everydayCO CLASSY? CONFIDENT? she took her life... ho, how confident.

  • @isaiahcansang SHE HAD A MENTAL DISORDER SON, SHE WAS DEPRESSED- SHE WAS HATED ON, SHE WAS LONELY. eVERYONE A=HAS THEIR BREAKING POINT AND I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH O\F REAL LIFE YOUVE EXPERIENCED BUT THINGS CAN TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORST VERY QUICKLY- ITS EVEN WORSE IF YOU HAVE A PSYCHOLOGICAL (BIOLOGICAL) AND NO SUPPORT SYSTEM

  • @sk84lif3everydayCO CO CLASSY? CONFIDENT? she took her life... oh, how confident.

  • Keke Wyatt looks ever more like her, but man..nobody could hold a candle to Phyllis in the looks department in the 70's, early 80's, right up until her last years. Those gorgeous lips, sultry eyes.

  • @doldromofthemerry yes.... where is my liner?

why dont we wear heavy eyeliner like this today & bright lips? I thought she was a make-up artist

  • 80's.

  • She was referring to Michael Jordan. LOL.

  • Yep. It's in the book

  • She was really cool in Kill Reflex. Looked fabulous. Used her own wardrobe. I think.

  • Why does she do that thing with her eyes???

  • Good question. She only does it while listening to a question, not while answering it. She might be unconsciously mimicking the interviewer.

  • now if i had a pistol, or a machette thats intimidating lol love it when she said that :)

  • The interviewer is a dummy. Who doesn't know that any real singer prefers a live performance to the studio. The crowd is the inspiration.

  • Today is June 30, 2009, 14 years after Phyllis Hyman died. I never knew her music that well but as a young singer, I decided to show respect to her career. Rest In Peace- love, Darrel Carter

  • LMAO!!!! Luv her facial reaction at 2:45 when she was interupted...

  • Life is short people. She died 4 years after this video. Overdose of pentobarbital and secobarbital. The over dose of secobarbital is what took down Judy Garland too. May God bless them both!

  • What I really love was her honesty with regards to men and her difficulties in that area. Most folks like to give the impression that they have no such difficulties. Thank you for the candor & ur musical contributions to the planet, Ms. H. ..R.I.P.

  • KIMORA LEE SIMMONS WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT PHYLLIS HYMAN IF THEY EVER MADE A MOVIE OF HER LIFE STORY!!!! Just an opinion:)

  • I always thought vivica a fox toni braxton or deborah cox

  • True that. There is a resemblance and something about the aura. Now the singing might be a problem.

  • Kimora is a spoiled bratty bitch! She lacks the passion and pain within the soul to make her 'believable' in a Ms. Hyman role anywhere, stage, film, or TV! Kimora Lee ain't got no Substance to her spirit--Phylis had substance and depth in spades. OAN: Kimora never loved Russell..she said in print, "he was awful in bed.." That wasn't some exboyfriend, that was ur exhusband and father of ur children. Even if ur no longer w/a guy, some things oughta remain sacred. ie: their sexual prowess

  • oh phyllis WHY!!!! we all loved you sooo much couldnt you see that you were never alone never

  • yeah...the hands... i always liked that about her...

  • Phyllis had the most beautiful hands. Long and graceful and always maintained. Just a side observation.

  • She was a hand "model" at one point. Yes, they were very large and square.

  • R.i.P! she will be missed

  • Yall wont beleive what I just found I was on wikipedia doing a search for the name phyllis in greek mythology. and the lady phyllis committs suicide by hanging herself on a tree . wow !

  • did she commit suicide?!!

  • yea she commited suicide

  • that wasn't kool..I hope she did it with a just reason, maybe it's due to the bipolar thing she had and the stress of life, business and inability to balance the two! She prolly overplaying her role in life!! It's kinda tricky trying to balance brains n looks! She's trying to hard here to sound intelligent!! She should have prolly taken life slightly more easily and laid back, no hurries in this vain and uncertain lives we lead!

  • Phyllis was diagnosed as bipolar, if I am not mistaken.

  • how was she TRYING to sound intelligent she WAS and conducted herself in a proper way.

  • if you say so

  • That's what people who are multi-dimensional do. Phyllis Hyman was a very intelligent complex woman. She wasn't trying, just being.

  • If she was just floating and being then she should have been around today! I know these kinds of ppl and she's defintely not multi-dimensional. Doing too many thing at once people say multi-tasking isn't multi-dimensional is somethng else but not that! She was trying to be more than that was necessary.

  • We are all entitled to our opinions. We will agree to disagree. Keep living son.

  • that thing she does with her eyes...my sister does it and she's bipolar too. I know its irrelavent but still

  • She looks like Lalah Hathaway.

  • she reminds me of phyllica rashad for some reason

  • I agree

  • Why dude wouldn't stop talking while they're interviewing. TALK DURING THE BREAK DARNNIT!!!

  • She makes me want to be a better woman. I miss her. RIP Phyllis. You are touching people still.

  • Miss Phyllis the Fashionista, the youngins of today have nothing on the ladies of the old school!

  • That was a really good interview, thanx 4 posting it. I really really really dig her authencity. She's just too "real", and I appreciate that in an entertainer. Especially bein' a big fan of rap where everybody's livin' a fairy tale. But the thing I love the most about her was her love for her race, that's very rare. Black folks really gotta start lovin' and lookin' out 4 each other. R.I.P. Phyllis. wish you could've found happiness down here on earth.

  • Breath takingly beautiful nubian goddess

  • testify!

  • she tried to kill herself a yr b4 this interview in 1990.she was engaged to b married so tht squashes the idea tht all she needed was a man and she wouldnt hav killed her self.not true.she needed self love, something she never had....yall should read her bio! yall wood love it.thts where i got my info!=)

  • She had self love. I know how it feels. when no one wants you . Being alone is hard and having someone right there with you can mean a whole lot. Phyllis didint want to hurt anymore thats why she killed herself

  • Ur delusional...she did love herself else or she wouldnt go forth in life and to do so much great works while she was alive. All she needed to be complete at this peak of her life is someone to share it with that wont take advantage and that appreciated her. Life sucks when u been hurt a lot &can get lonely w/o a monogomous significant other

  • who is delusional?

  • u should read her bio. phyllis struggles thru the most of her life. she was very unhappy and insecure and had little self worth. if you dnt bleve me the take it up with the person who wrote the bio..which i read...

  • I think I'm the only one who understood what you said. I just finished her book. She had plenty of love from people around her and people who tried to stop her a number of times but your right when you don't love yourself or see your life as one worth living and saving than it's only but so much people can do to stop her from what she did. Sadly she didn't love herself.

  • thank u. i dnt understand y pple keep saying phyllis loved herslef. these are obviously pple who have not read her bio.even with out her bio it is common sence that pple that kill themselves usually donot have self love. im not insulting her. i love phyllis. just speaking facts.its sad but true.

  • Thank you I agree %100

  • She was soo unhappy in that relationship.. if she didnt love herself she wouldnt have went forth with her musical career&produce great work. She is crying out in her songs. Thats how she really felt

  • u should READ THE BIO.yes its true that she was crying out in her songs.but wen you READ THE BIO u will seee that her shrink AND pple who knew her closely AND phyllis herself all say that she never had self love. as i sed before. if u have a problem with that take it up with. JAS0N A MICHEAL the man who wrote it. and once again! PPLE WHO HAVE SELF WORTH AND SELF LOVE DONOT COMMIT SUICIDE! READ THE BIO READ THE BIO READ THE BIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Her eyes tells her life story.

  • yep thats what i get...sadness from her eyes.

  • I wish I could kiss her lips .

  • I promise yall if I ever get famous I will make PHYLLIS HYMAN's name be known to everyone out here

  • I agree my man. I'm goin to do the same.

  • :) im gonna wear phyllis tshirts lol

  • ME TOO!

  • SAME HERE!

  • I know she was thinking dont start with me, I know where you live lol

  • I agree with antiann52, I wish Phyllis could have convinced herself that everybodies going to die anyway. I myself have had suicidal thoughts, But i always tell myself nobody lives here on earth forever we all will die eventually.

  • I agree, but sometimes people cant deal with it like how others might. If phyllis felt that it was her time to go, we should respect that

  • she's so expressive with her eyes lol...too cute

  • I be doing the same things with my eyes lol I love it

  • Man, this is so great to see Phyllis in the latter part of her career. Excellent video quality. There's so little of her posted on the internet. Thanks so much for posting!

  • I think Phylis had a lot to live for. It's sad that she didn't believe that. I wish that somehow she could have found the strength to not take her life. I am not judging her, that is God's job. No one else should either. RIP, Phylis

  • well sometimes we all dont see it

  • Phyllis seemed like she would snap on somebody in a minute - you could tell that she was visibly irritated by the stage hand...I love her, but I wouldn't have wanted to be on her bad side :-)

  • lol she'll knock somebody the hell out lol go phyllis

  • Beyonce needs to learn from this classy lady! She is a great communicator.

  • Beyonce was not even on anybody's radar when this video was filmed yet for some reason you feel the need to bring her name into it. As a Beyonce fan I have watched this video almost a dozen times and didn't feel the need to bring Beyonce's name into it. I LOVE how articulate and candid Ms. Hyman was in her interviews and I can say that without degrading another artist. It's sad that I can't even watch a damn Phylis Hyman video without Beyonce's name being brought up.

  • forget beyonce

  • I agree

  • My ex looks so much like Phyllis that it's scary! She was a beautiful woman.

  • I love the class Phyllis exuded and so talented. I do wonder what is wrong with her eyes throughout this interview , she kept making them big everytime the interviewer would ask a question, anyone else notice that.

  • @dreswifey25 I have noticed it. So, I think she was trying to listening more actively to the interviewer.

  • it is truly sad that she did not get treatment for being BIPOLAR....in another interview she describe the classic signs/symptoms of this mental condition....very sad that she committed suicide the night she was to perform the APOLLO.

  • what a great thing to say to a person who passed away loser

  • Has anyone seen the Kill Reflex? I would like to see it. :)

  • found it on Amazon on VHS, it was never put on DVD. Only bought it because Phyllis was in it. Okay movie

  • it hurts me everytime i see and interview of hers she was so poised, confident i mean she was a sexxy woman (no im not a lesbian but i do give credit when its due) lol but what hurts me is that she was so unhappy and took her on life, i wonder why?

  • She keep getting hurt by men. After a while of continuous heartache full deception the agony becomes overwhelming and paralyzing. I totally understand it cuz Im dealing with it now. Pray my strength

  • At 5:44 why did the camera man zoom in? I think the crew was inexperienced. That probably annoyed her.
