Most people seem fixated on 'squillo' & volume instead of the qualities that make true artistry. Bergonzi had it in abundance - style, great diction, beautiful colour of the voice & most importantly, he had the gift of sincerity in his delivery. I heard him the Maestro many times, met him & he was as humble as he was great!
On peut toujours discuter sur les nuances mais avec Bergonzi, Bjorling et Corelli nous tenons à mon avis les trois plus grands Manrico. Cela reste affaire de gout.
I'm sorry to disagree with your criticism of Bergonzi. From the 50's on this man was known as a heroic workhorse of many opera houses around the world. I find his highly disciplined singing as elegant as Richard Tuckers and as correct [exact]
as Jan Peerce's. These two elements are what I listen for as they're what I was trained to turn my radar on everytime I went to an opera or listened to a record.
There has to be something between you and Bergonzi ,Max.Everybody has their rights to opinions,BUT I beleive that you know something about singing. You know that Jussi Bjorling was a great tenor and in the field of Puccini and some of the French repetoire he had no peers. His 1944 recording of Nessun Dorma casts the longest shadow and as one person wrote his voice was one of un shed tears.BUT Max I can appreciate other great voices but with you its got to be personel or you are just a NUTTER.
For what it's worth ... Bergonzi is the tenor who first made me fall in love with opera back in the '60s. My mother bought me the famous early '50s "Butterfly" recording with Bergonzi as Pinkerton and Renata Tebaldi as Butterfly.
IMO, Bergonzi's duet with Tebaldi at the end of Act I is beyond incredible. His voice just radiates sensuality.
Let be fair now. Maxhansendk is an idiot for lying about "coinesseurs" not liking Bergonzi, but there's no need to insult Bjorling. Bergonzi may have had italian diction, vocal size and (perhaps) phrasing over him, but Bjorling has vocal beauty, range and squillo.
To maxhansendk. Bergonzi is a lirico-spinto tenor greatly admired (bel canto's specialist only) for his pointed diction, beautiful legato and elegant phrasing. Sorry, but your comment is uninteresting.
Bergonzi is ALWAYS on my list of favorite singers. First - he has a lovely sounding voice, light and unaffected with plenty of character in his tone - beautifully produced sound. This clip makes him sound like he has a faster vibrato than I have heard on his recordings. Remember - singers are human and are affected by all sorts of things. Anyone who criticizes him I say - LET'S SEE YOU DO IT BETTER.
On a personal crusade against Bergonzi eh? what did he do to you? Nobody says he has the beauty of tone that your idol Bjorling had, but there must be something wrong with you that you have to post insults against him all over the place. If you have criticisms to make substantiate them. Show us your insight
Bergonzi triumphantly reminds us here that Trovatore is a bel canto opera. He exhibits virtually perfect bel canto style while merging the strengths of Corelli, Bjoerling, and di Stefano in addition to giving this all the feeling and emotion (in the audio, not the video). Practically 100% complete!
Not just one of the greatest Verdi Tenors of the century , but also a great voice taecher and coach. Bergonzi is such a great artist. istayed in his hotel in Busseto and met him while there years ago. I watched him coach young singers as well
Bergonzi sang into his 70's. One can easily appreciate the immense contribution this marvelous singer made for opera and his loyal and knowledgable fans. Corelli, who is the only tenor to record [in studio] the ending in a blazing double-note--a high C that produces an intense dramatic effect. Bergonzi, here, changes the sound slightly on the same ending note. All in all Bergonzi was an operatic workhorse. A wonderful gentleman and one of the greatest Verdi tenors ever.

The passion and intensity are 100 times bigger in Parma 2006, as sang by Marcelo Álvarez. You can hear his Pira on Yutube also. Bergonzi is one of my favorites, but Álvarez is really on fire in his Pira with a perfect C at the end.

La grandezza di Bergonzi é unica ed indiscutibile. Peccato che non la si possa apprezzare nel filmato poiché non canta dal vivo ma é doppiato.

Thank you for posting this. Bergonzi's passion and intensity, along with his great voice, are sadly missing from most opera performances today.
