He just was unlucky to be young at that terrible era when democracy failed in Europe. He did not have any say of what was happening. The rich, powerful and megalomaniac (Hitler and Stalin mainly who started the war together) spoiled ordinary people's life. They didn't want war anywhere.
Many soldiers were brave, even some on the enemy side. Kudos for the British U-boats and troops in North Africa. Marshall Harris, though proudly showing his "blue book" is embarassing and remains so.
