A study was done not too long ago on distance run by players and it is only midfield AFL players that run great distances. Most of them don't cover too much more than 5 or 6, the same as an average league player covers.

Even though it is only midfielders and some on-ballers that run the most distances (some up to 14k's a match), the AFL guys have more weight to carry, coz they pack more muscle, so theoretically they should tire easier. But most of them play the whole match, not substituting them every 20 mins after 5 or 6 hit-ups.

Over the course of a season Rugby League get millions more viewers not only through regular NRL games but through interstate and international fixtures, two things the AFL doesn't have. Why? because outside of regional southern/western towns AFL has zero presence in the world.
