The bible never says the world is 6 thousand years old, piss poor readers of the bible say that. The fact of the matter is the bible says the earth was formed at the same time as the heavens. It then sat for awhile and then he did alot of work on it in seven days after the fact of it forming. It totally pisses me off when atheists misqote the bible and its even worse when a "christian" does it all the more.
My experience of Rationalists is that they are people with closed minds. They demand 'empirical proof' but would never accept anything that contradicted their pre-conceived ideas about, say, ghosts or spiritualism or tarot cards. They make up their minds in advance that such things have no foundation in truth. How many spiritualist meetings or tarot card readings have you attended with a COMPLETELY open mind?
"Rationalism never shakes off its status of an experimental adventure. The combined influences of mathematics and religion, which have so greatly contributed to the rise of philosophy, have also had the unfortunate effect of yoking it with static dogmatism. Rationalism is an adventure in the clarification of thought, progressive and never final." - Alfred North Whitehead
Empiricism is about doing the work and finding out for yourself. Rationalism is about throwing your hands into the air and resorting to abstract reasoning.
There is no umbrella term for Rationalism and Empiricism vs. the F word, because the R and E words are diametrically opposed to one another. One is bullshit and the other isn't.
What you're describing chsbcg is a misunderstanding of the subject. Rationalism in terms of rationalism vs. imperisism is about logic yes, however rationalism vs. irrationalism (faith) is an umbrella term for rationalism and imperisism.
Let me just tell you that this is pseudo-rationalism. Rationalism is not about evidence nor experience, it is about thought. Therefore, philosophy of religion is rational because it is using thought for the existence of God and the soul. Rationalism today is Humanist fundamentalism.
I haven't really had much to rant about recently pdoeman lol. Have several more speeches from Rationalist Week 2007 to upload in the near future though.
