Totally agree with anton1990. In fact, there is a trilogy "Once Upon A Time": Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time the Revolution (called "Duck, You sucker!" or "A Fistful of Dynamite" in the US), and Once Upon a Time in America. This one is the second film of the trilogy.
If only this masterpiece would have been named after it's French title, "Once upon a time in the Revolution", it would have gotten the praise it deserves!
the thing that i like with this movie is that the "modern" world meet the "old western " world and togheter they fight against each other.. kinda awesome though
Was there anyone better than James Coburn from the magnificent 7 to fistful of dynamite and of course the Baltimore Bullet,Each was better than the other,There will never be another James Coburn !!

I watched this the other day, great film, but I didn't understand the final flashback where John's friend kisses his girlfriend. Anybody care to enlighten me what the situation here was?
@bradshawvincent she was in love with both, but Sean's friend rats him out to the Black and Tans (or whoever, this film is massively anachronistic viz the Ireland stuff (Sean has an IRA flag but he's hanging around Mexico c. 1914, the IRA was formed in January 1919)) under torture (and jealousy?) and he shoots him in the bar.
@macchilavel thanks thats interesting maybe we have to allow some artistic license? so the mexico revolution was in 1914?? maybe he was there towards the end of it? just guessing.
@bradshawvincent nah, it's just that Leone needed a jaded revolutionary and the Irish revolution was the nearest and most popular thing around (historically speaking) - the Mexican and Irish revs are the metaphorical backdrops to a story about idealism and cynicism. It's almost as much about the Italian civil war his youth - which is why it's fine to have Gunter Reza pottering along in a very un1913 tank and Sean wasting his troops with a machinegun that won't be invented for another 20 years :)
@macchilavel thanks thats facinating. you seem to have a good knowledge of history,at least much better than mine! do you study or teach it? i suppose when your dealing with universal themes like these,a bit of mix and match, does no harm.
@timokho123 nope, at the bridge scene Sean (James Coburn) is using a MG42, one of the most famous bits of Nazi weapon design ever and 29 years out of date. But at least you were polite about it.
This theme takes me back to when I was six years old and my dad had to go into hospital. I was so worried about him that I couldn't sleep for days, so one night I crept down stairs at about 2am and this movie happened to be on TV. Even at such a young age it brought me peace, and now it reminds me of that time so long, long ago. God bless you dad.
When I saw the directors cut... I realized... this is a MOVIE... in all it senses and should be. Please folks, take a step from the vampire flicks and whatch a movie. This gives you all what life has to do with it. Maybe too many male roles... but yet again... fantastic movie... it's a MOVIE. Longing for a daring director... and pleeeeze... do not TRY to make a remake.
ahh - this is reharmonised - I had a ennio moricone cd once and it had ANOTHER different version of the theme tune - where from arises such crazy assymetry? What and where is the one I remember from the american film version shown on British TV in the early 90's while I was drunk and crying?
There is actually another version to this song on Hollywood Records thats sounds better in my opinion. But my copy is in bad shape. Wish i knew someone that had it.
great film,i love the part when he kills the two british soldiers in the pub, what a great hit on the brits,by the irish natives,we will always spill the english blood on irish soil
I feel ashamed I only just saw this film today...All the wasted years! This is now my favorite film ever now. The soundtrack really does compliment the movie and vise versa in perfect symmetry!
Revolution.....is very safe for those who don't have to fight!!! but reap the rewards...such a screen play....love this movie .......such honesty!!!!! Belfast Calling.....Freedom!!!!! Please answer soon.........
one of the most influencial films dealing with revoultion and all the elements that are incuured, politically and personally, because to have a revoultion you need people and their private feelings to be expressed! what a truly beautiful film on every level of cinema!!!!! incredible!!!!
