I've never had a SMS, but I've had a Game Gear since I was a kid, and a few months ago I bought the Master Gear converter which lets the Game Gear play Master System games.
There sre some differences with the Master System I owned. The d-pad on my controller had a button in the center and little joysticks you could attach to it. And the phaser didn't have a red tip.
Im brazilian and it´s interesting to see how the american SMS design differs from ours. The brazilian SMS had separate and universal audio/video jacks/plugs, so you could use any AV cable. Our AC adaptor used the american´s SMS AV connector as the power connector, so you couldnt use any AC adapter, just Sega´s. Also, the "card slot" was labeled "3d Glasses" for us, since no card games were made here. The rest of the console was identical to ours. And the pistol was entirely black.
I really like The Master System. I actually prefer it to the N.E.S. That may be because I grew up with the Master System rather than an N.E.S. though.
Great video series! I LOVE IT! One question I wanted to ask; Who was the narrator for the commercial at the end? He did some big-time announcing deals, from ABC Sunday Night Movie (I think it was), to Disney Specials on ABC, to the SMS commercials of course, to narrating the lead-in TV spot for the pilot for Star Trek: The Next Generation... he was quite prolific! What was his name? :)
The voice over guy's name was Ernie Anderson. He was one of the more popular and prolific voice over talents in the 70's and 80's. His son is Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of Boogie Nights and There Will be Blood. -Ray
Glad you like the videos. We put alot of work into making these to get them to the form you see here. We are currently working on 4 different systems right now so there is more on the way.
i love your console wars of the past videos, some of the best on youtube and i have watched alot of videos on youtube, i have been on for about 1.75 years, keep making them :D

Those 3D glasses are actaully very similar to modern "shutter glasses" that you use at IMAX 3D or on the 3D TV's.
The difference is a regular TV is only 60hz, which relates to 30hz per eye, where as the 3D TV's of today are 120hz, 240hz or even more.
The shutters on the glasses open and close in sync with the TV.
When the picture for the left eye is on screen, the shutter for the right eye is closed.

The Atari Lynx came out a year earlier than the Sega Game Gear and was actually the first handheld system with a backlit screne.

i always disliked the master system controller, so id either use a Sega Genesis Controller, or an Atari 7800 controller.

Ernie also did Break the Bank with Tom Kennedy, and America's Funniest Home Videos with Bob Saget. Both for ABC of course.
