Eliseo Orefice (played by Giustino Durano) to his nephew Guido Orefice (played by Roberto Benigni)
Guido: (learning how to be a waiter) How far do I bow? I suppose I can even go 180 degrees.
Eliseo: Think of a sunflower, they bow to the sun. But if you see some that are bowed too far down, it means they're dead. You're here serving, you're not a servant. Serving is the supreme art. God is the first of servants. God serves men, but he's not a servant to men.
Soundtrack question: When Guido (? Joshua's father) is shot, what's the name of the song that plays during that scene in the movie? My computer named it "The Journey That Had To Be" but I can't find it anywhere online....
This movie is real masterpiece of cinematography. I've never seen a movie with such a balance of hysterical comedy and serious drama. Roberto Benigni was brilliant. Nicoletta Braschi was impressive too. The movie won 3 Oscars I would give it more. Life is Beautiful is one of my all time favorite War movies - along with Escape from Sobibor (1987), Schindler's List (1993), Savior (1998), Enemy at the Gates (2001), The Pianist (2002) and Black Book (2006).
This is more than just a movie. This masterpiece affected me in such a way that I locked myself up in my room and cried for hours together! And every time I watch this movie, I'm filled with pure rage against Hitler.. To such a great extent that I desperately wanted to go back in time to mutilate that motherfucker into a million pieces and flush them down my toilet!!! FUCK YOU HITLER!!!
we watched this movie in Italian class and our teacher didn't tell us one thing before-hand, so I got really sad at the ending! D: I don't wanna spoil it for anyone else, but I can't believe that happened to him!
@ianredford2001 I'm from Germany and i think this movie is GENIUS! ( So don't put us all in the same drawer. >.>) i cried, because i was really ashamed of what the fascists did...and generally what happened in this war. Damn wars. ._. Why? We are all human, aren't we? So why is this necessary...
the germans prohibited the film in all their cinema in Germany, and they boycotted the film, just for you to know.... OUR NAZI friends are still the same after 60 years
I can't believe this. To prohibited something in the era of internet is simply impossible.
However awesome movie. Is there a part when German officer with strong voice ordered something and R. Benini translate him in a funny way. What the german originally talked about?
@ladomiroff The german officer was explaining why the Jews were in that concentration camp, what they should do and what happens if someone tries to escape.
I love this film, it is simply amazing. I had to be strong not to cry. Guido was the best dad. Even when confronted with adversity, he managed to make his son smile and enjoy "the game". It teaches us so many lessons about love and family, simply amazing.
no!!! noooooooo nonono! why ALL scenes settled here in italy in ALL movies have this &%$!!£ mandolin!!!!! why!! it spoils even this soundtrack I can't believe!!!
