@chickenlaise - Hello. I used the stock kanstul mouthpiece I believe which is probably equivalent to a Bach 5C. Sure the mouthpiece can have an influence on the sound but it doesn't seem to be as pronounced a difference as on a trumpet.
Yup, less would definitely be more in your case. Just listen to Chet... The more notes you play the worse your timing gets and eventually your swing feel is completely lost. I've heard some of your other recordings and you can play really well but this one didn't start off well and eventually I had to stop it playing!! Sorry..
Are you playing in the key of D and changing some of the notes from the written score?
I'm trying to learn this from sheet music for piano and voice and it seemed like transposing it to D and bringing it down an octave was the right thing to do.
I have a Le Blanc Flugelhorn. I don't play it too much, though it plays sweetly. I had trouble adjusting from a flugelhorn mouthpiece to a trumpet one for the longest time until I played trombone in my high school's lowest jazz band for one year and baritone in it's second band (we had three), then I never had problems again.
nice, i assume you're developing your jazz improv rep. My advice would be to not be afraid of the 6s,7s,9s,13s etc. they can really help tell your story. Just keep doing what you're doing. personally, i would suggest not transcribing solos or copying licks. Make some up that really speak to you. and stay away from "licks" as much as possible
Ok, free lesson. Your typical scale consists of 8 or 9 notes. 1 through 9. So by saying 6, I'm referring to the 6th scale degree, or the 6 of the corresponding chord. 7 obviously being the 7th scale degree. a 9th being the 9th scale degree (In an 8 note scale this is just the 2nd, but an octave higher). The 13th, etc. (In an 8 note scale the 13th would be the 6th, but an octave higher). We call the 9s and 13s and above, extensions. If you need clarification on anything, e-mail me.
dude, firstly very nice tone - warm and round (nice!), secondly you have good enough technique and you clearly have the right sort of hardware, one thing, with regards to improv (which was nice dont get me wrong), less is more. i think you should chill out a bit. great playing!
Thanks for your honest comment. It's refreshing to hear negative comments on the music as well as positive. I appreciate the fact that you weren't abusive. I'm currently struggling with the "less is more" concept. Bobby Shew once said to me that people told him his solos got better after he injured his right hand and couldn't play as fast.
wow thanks, i never knew that about bobby! they arent negative comments by the way, i think constructive is better. i should really post something myself - i play with tommy smith's youth jazz orchestra in scotland and the national youth one here too. so i only pass on what the pro's have told me. keep it up!
How similar would you say this is to trumpet?I've been playing for 6 months, not a long time. But I feel as though I should workon more challenging pieces.
When I played at U of L, Louisville, KY, Mr. Aebersold made a few visits on our jazz band...Mike Tracy was our director...man that was some great times. Nice playing on the Flugel....
Im about to get a Flugelhorn, listening to you, I know who I wanna sound like, lol, I love your tone, its so damn smooth, it just made for the flugel, nice solo, I like your take on the melody, Its pretty straight, but your timing, the grace notes, it all came together, I gotta post sumthing when I get my Flugelhorn, or when I sound good, or maybe ill do a before/after take on it lol, ~Mb
i have the exact flugelhorn. Kanstul 1525. My favorite flugel of all time.

@NDguy141 Bobby Shew is very personable and it probably helps that he lives in my old hometown and I took some lessons with him.

Hey great sound! I personally prefer summertime kept basic, but what does that matter.

might i ask what mouthpiece were you using in this vid?
the kanstul sounds like a dream, but the mouthpiece has a great impact on sound too.
i just want to know the kit u use to achieve this wonderful, full, warm sound
