  • Anyone else having the string pop right out of the hole when they are winding it? It's driving me mad. Just getting to tuning pitch and the whole thing is then flying off the post

  • I lost my little cranky thingy. :c

  • Thank you for the instructions.... I just got my telly with kluson tuners....before i seen your video i didnt even know what a kluson tuner was, let alone how to change it.

  • excellent observation about twisting the strings,I can see how the twisting action could cause tuning instability by the string either twisting more or unraveling, causing unneeded and unwanted fatigue within the string itself. good job and jus over 4 mins!!!

  • @luckitz Thanks for the kind words....please feel free to hit me up any time if you have questions..!!! -Billy

  • i'm using an american deluxe stratocaster. will taking off all the strings at once before putting them on again affect the tension on the neck?

  • @metalbody96 Do you mean will it hurt or have a negative impact on the neck? The answer is no. There are times when you have to take all the strings off to perform necessary maintenance on the fingerboard and/or frets. -Billy

  • thanks man, i just saw it...

  • thank you so much

  • hey billy, what after change the strings, i mean, with the tension of them, how to change them and be ready to play alive avoiding the risk of being out of tune? cheers from venezuela...

  • @epitafiopadreporras Go to my channel and I have a video on how to stretch strings...I cannot post the link here... Let me know if you have any more questions... -Billy

  • hey billy is it ok to take all the strings off?

  • I have had a jaguar for four days, just broke the high e ,and was playing an Ibanez prior to this. That had a hole on the side of the tuner that the string went through, but the jaguar strings seemed to go into a hole on the top of the tuner. It looked a bit weird so I looked for a specifically fender tutorial. It looks like you pop it into the top and tune. Is that it?

  • @rebornstar26 Yes...follow the video and it will work. Let me know if you have any questions. -Billy

  • @300guitars

okay and since it goes into the top and doesn't come out of another end like my Ibanez did that's why you cut them first right?

  • @rebornstar26 Yes, that's exactly right. Let me know if you have any trouble and I will help. -Billy

  • @300guitars

Sorry to post so many questions but now that I cut it, it barley reaches the hole and definitely can't rap around. I'm thinking about going up to my local shop.

  • @rebornstar26 Did you use the measurements like I showed you in the video for where to cut the strings?

  • @300guitars

okay and since it goes into the top and doesn't come out of another end like my Ibanez did that's why you cut them first right?

  • I have same problem. The tuners have holes in the top. You can't just "pop" it in the top or just just "pop" out again. This is really frustrating and i have no idea how to do it.

  • i want change my strings on my Start, now i have 0.9 fender strings, a lot of people say that the ernie ball are the best. i want play hard rock, what kind of string i need? the 0.9 or the 0.10 or the 0.11 ?

  • @Burnroses Strings are a personal choice. I like .010-.046 DR Nickel Blues strings. If you decide to go with larger strings than .009's then you will probably need to have your guitar set up to accommodate the heavier string gauge. -Billy

  • @Burnroses I would say either .009 or .010's. Find a brand like Ernie Ball that you like. i prefer the DR strings myself... -Billy

  • You push the strings down into the head tuning pegs, how? my tele has a little metal box thing on the back of the head

  • @elliotminorkid The tuners on my Tele are the old Kluson type. There is a hole in the center of the shaft where the string goes. Your tuners may be a more modern type and does not have that hole. Probably a different tuner. -Billy

  • Hey there,

Just want to say this video has made changing strings not only for myself but family and friends a total breeze! Compared to the hack job I made before, I feel like a pro!

    Thanks Billy!

  • @arnoldtheduck Thank you very much for the kind words..!! I am glad I could help..!! Feel free to hit me up any time if you have any questions...!!!-Billy

  • Hey Billy. Thank you very much for this very excellent video!!!!

The first time i tried to restring my strat was in a drunken state round at my friends house, suffice to say the guitar had to go back to the shop where we all had a laugh about it. Was really apprehensive about retringing it again and had being putting it off, but thanks to your video the task was comleted easily and painlessy. Thanks again buddy!!!

  • GREAT...!!! Glad I could help. Ask me any questions....any time!! -Billy

  • If my Fender Stratocaster guitar is set to .09 gauge strings, can I then put .10 gauge strings on without any problems, or do I have to set it to .10 gauge strings, 'cause I've done that with a Les Paul guitar for .11 gauge strings, and that was quite expensive ?

  • @ThornlessSlash you need to get it set up again after changing string gauge

  • what is that yellow thing

also how much string do you put in the tuning hole?

  • Hi there- The yellow thing is called a string winder. It is like a little crank that goes over the tuner and makes it much faster to wind a guitar string around the tuner post. I push the string into the hole until it bottoms out which is about 1/2" or so. Let me know if you have more questions!! -Billy

  • will this work for a kramer imperial?

  • Yes....especially if your Kramer has Kluson tuners. I worked at Kramer back in '84 during the EVH era......fun times. -Billy

  • @300guitars ok thanks alot for the advice :)

  • You got it!! -Billy

  • tnank you , most of the videos only show you the tuners with holes, all my guitars have slots , so this video is perfect, I assume it is slots as I cant see in the video ! what is the diffrence, why do they use slots ?

    Cheers

  • I'm glad this video helped you out!! The slots are just the old style tuners from the 50's and 60's (and even into the 70's). I like this type tuner because there are no loose string ends to worry about. -Billy

  • do you say "break angle" at 1:35? What is it exactly?

    thx in advance

  • Yes, I did say break angle. That is the angle the string takes from the nut to the tuner. The more string wraps you have the more the angle increases....which is what you want. If the string goes through the nut to the tuner at a shallow angle the string could pop out of the nut slot and possibly lack sustain. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions...I am happy to answer them! -Billy

  • i heard its bad to take all the strings off at the same time, is that bad?

  • No, it is not bad. It's not good if you take them all off and let the guitar sit without strings for a really long period of time however. But sometimes you need to take all the strings off for maintenance, pickup swaps, etc. -Billy

  • I have less trouble with floyds but i started out on floyds for some reason after i tune my fender which i just got it doesnt fell just right . ater you cut how much of the string are you putting into key before wrapping ? mail me brotha

  • Can you tell me what your exact question is and I will answer it for you. Happy to help! -Billy

  • I think you mean the length of the bit you put into the tuner. Just put it in there till you can't put it any further.

  • Thanks for this vid mate, it was absolutely necesary.

  • Great! Glad I could help. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will try to help you out! -Billy

  • does this work for a starcaster?

  • Yes. Just follow along and it will work for you and the Starcaster. -BIlly

  • great... now how do you put strings on a telecaster

  • Hi and thanks for the comment! The guitar in the video is a Telecaster!!!! Just copy what I have there, string it up and ROCK!!!! -Billy (PS- feel free to email me and ask any questions)!!

  • Strange how handy this video is - I didn't bother cutting a high E string before/after I put on to my Mustang and it's way too long. It's so long that I can't actually tune it to E, it's in Db at the moment and it won't twist it anymore so time to start again!

  • Thanks very much for putting this on youtube. Now I know!!! Cheers.

  • perfect instruction.

    thx

  • does a fender telecaster thinline have Kluson type tuners? (obviously i have one =) ) and is there any way you can zoom in a bit more on what exactly you're doing when restringing the telecaster? (and what telecaster type is it as well?)

  • This video will work if your tuners have the hole in the middle of the shaft. I think your Tele has them. The Tele in the video is one I built a while ago.

  • Comment removed

  • what happens if you forget to put the b string under the little metal piece.

  • You just loosen the B string and slip it under. Then re-tune. E-Z!!

  • thanks

  • you just hold your finger to the string so you get more reps around the peg? I just wind and i can only get the string to go about one time around to get up to pitch, will the string break if i wind the string more so i can have more reps around the peg?

  • Yes, it will break. You need to leave some extra slack so you can get a few wraps on the string. Watch the video and try it again. Leave slack before you start winding the string.

  • i dont cut them before i put them on i just wind and then cut once i tune it up to pitch

  • There may be too many wraps on the post if you do not cut them before you start winding them and bring them up to pitch.

  • Then you most likely don't have vintage Kluson tuners.

You would have way to many wraps and no way of trimming it once you've wound and tuned it.

  • is the same for the stratocaster?

  • Yes, same method for any type of Fender style guitar with Kluson type tuners.

  • This video really helped me out, thanks man :]

  • Wow, these things are the most frustrating ever. the stupid G and high E strings keep wanting to undo all the work I've done after like a wrap or two.

  • Are they coming unwound during the winding process? If so keep tension on the string until it is tight enough. Or if they become unwound after they are up to pitch then you need more wraps around the post. I suggest that you have 4-5 wraps around the post when the string is at pitch. Let me know how it goes!

  • This method only applies to a guitar (electric or acoustic) that has Kluson type tuners with the hollow post. You put the string right down the center of the post so you have to pre-cut. I hope this helps!

  • oh thank you, now I see it, great video!

  • I've got a Fender telecaster aerodyne, could I cut the strings after I place the string?

I haven't changed strings on this guitar yet, I'm only used to change strings on an acoustic, so I'm kinda confused, is the procedure same for acoustic and electric guitar?

  • I don't see how the ball could get stuck in the nut. Do you mean if the ball gets stuck in the bridge on a Strat or a ferrule on the back of a Tele or hardtail Strat? If that the case you can use something small in diameter like an allen wrench to push the ball end out from the top. You cannot pull it out from behind. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!

  • what if the ball gets stuck in the nut when taking the string out

  • do you have any video's showing the whole "re-string" process?

  • It may look like I am doing something different but it is all the same for each string. Put the string in the hole until it bottoms out. Then just bend it over at a right angle and start winding the string. Please let me know if you need more info. I am happy to help!

  • How exactly are you bending the strings after inserting them in the hole? It appears your giving the D, A, & E a slight kink but doing something a bit more strenuous on the higher strings. Any advice?

  • please help!!!!!! i bought a guitar just yesterday and my string broke so i just need to learn how to put it into the headstcok and into the bridge

  • Thanks. I have a bass with vintage tuners, but I put them on wrong. I just got a Jaguar and it has vintage tuners, but I couldn't figure out how to put them on correctly.

  • No, just keep the E string straight and line it up with the D tuner. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info. Happy to help!

  • dude i need help now some of my strings keeps hitting the fret when i play and produce a weird sound when i play the electric without an amp is this a big deal or not ??

  • If the strings are hitting your frets then your guitar may need to be set up. This is the time of year when my guitars need some tweaking. Check to see if your neck is back-bowed. Let me know if I can help!

  • can you tell me how to change the strings on my fender squier showmaster? thanks!

  • when you measure do you keep the string straight and line it up with the D tuner or do you curve it around the E tuner so that it is actually touching the D tuner?

  • thanks

  • Yeah if yeah do windings on the trebles strings by your hand it's kind of a pain in the ass cause it does just twist out while your trying to wrap it around the post. The best way is just measure you slack and then start to wind the string around the post it's a lot easy and less hassle. Good video.

  • The yellow thing is called a string winder which is essentially a crank that allows you to wind the string faster and with a little more control. They are cheap and available at any guitar shop.

  • What about yamaha EG112C guitar the same way?>

  • The same principals apply- same amount of wraps on the tuner posts. The tuners on the Yamaha do not have the hole in the post like the Kluson. Put the string through the hole in the post and use the same measurements I used on the Fender.

  • Whats that yellow thing that turns the tuner anyway

  • All guitars are restring the same way?

  • Not all guitars restring the same way. This is a demo of a Fender guitar wtih Kluson type tuners.

  • very helpful...thanks!!!

  • so wish I watched this before I just went and fucked up my restringing. grrrrrrrrrrr

  • Actually this *is* pretty helpful, about where to cut the string. I'm getting the hang of not wrapping it manually now

  • Unfortunately this doesn't help me at all. The high E string doesn't want to stay in the hole. A little more detail on that would have been helpful. Really hating these tuners, love the guitar

  • thanks this made things way easier for me

  • but how do u get the strings in the base of it?

  • great video being a novice first time i have re-strung my guitar and this video made it easy.

  • Very useful video.Thanks!!

  • Very useful video. Thanks!!!!

  • thanks man I was really having trouble with those kluson tuners. now it is quite clear!

  • thank you so much

  • omg thankyou so much

  • Excellent video. Thank you.

  • ah man, I feel like a retard. I've only ever had the newer style tuners and had no idea that there was a hole in the centre of these kluson tuners. I went through 2 sets of strings trying to wrap em like the newer style! probably thrown out my inontation now too.

  • Best demo video I have ever seen!!

    This guy knows his stuff
