Actually my friend in Vegas was called onto stage as the strait man, and he could not figure out how it was done, even though he locked Teller in the tank. This is water in the tank, so far as he could tell and not just a thin fake water layer.
He did say Penn Did whisper to him that even if he mistakenly guesses the correct card keep saying no....
@quezcatol That wouldn't solve anything, like Jags said, the mask has a breathing device that goes into the nose. Note how you could not see his nostrils. Whether or not he has water in his mask, would not make a damn difference to this trick.
@quezcatol Also I finally realized what you meant. No that would not work because of the fact that as you could see from the respirator, air bubbles were flowing through the water.
Just saying I do a lot of magic as well and you can see at 13:54 fog inside his mask increasing and decreasing......put it on the big screen if you cant see it :) so he could breathe the whole time
@double0handsome The story behind the red nail is the supposedly - When he first began performing, his mother told him to get a manicure because people would be looking at his hands. In response to this, he had all of his nails painted red as a joke. The one remaining red fingernail is in honor of his mother.
@1982tuija I get the feeling that it isn't going to last, but if it isn't, it's a shame because I really, really enjoyed it. At first it seems like an everyday sort of talent show but it's got so much more depth and humor.
Pause @ 09:36. Frame advance and watch Penn walk toward the tank with his hand in his left jacket pocket. @ 09:38 fix your gaze on the top of the tank displayed on the monitor in the upper left corner of the screen (above Dan's head). Frame advance from 09:38 to 09:40 and watch Penn place his left hand (guess what is in his hand) on/in the top of the tank.
@josephsisson You're not "the one" to spoil the illusion genius that's the point. Every 10 comments is some idiot who thinks they are sherlock holmes pointing out obvious shit that's been said a thousand times already.
This effect was created for Saturday Night Live many years ago and has been performed by Penn & Teller many times. Teller always comes out alive to perform another day. Penn has stated more than once that magicians who employ real danger in their acts are immoral and would not be allowed on the show by the producers. Rest assured that Teller was never at any time in any danger. Sorry, just thinking logically. Great entertainment though. Participants reactions to the induced panic very funny!
its fun that penn kinda tells you how to do this trick only thing i hate is that i cant see penn's all the time so im not sure does he give him the card when he holds the key with him :P
nice trick this one i know how it was done... or rather how i would do it but not bad. And its funny because it would have been more real had penn passed out at around the 4 min mark and just stayed that way like the average person.
I thought this was very amature for Penn and Telller. You can see teller's chest breathing all the time meaningthe mask is being fed with air and the struggle with Penn trying to get the key off teller is the amature. No you did not fool us....Please do better next time guys. Very obvious and below your brilliant tallent.
@mit7771 Thank you for your comment and for argueing against me but in a respectful way.. I appreciate it. OK I'll take it as you said. I didn't find it realy funny so thats probably why I was looking for the magic instead of the comic value of it. Therefor, perhaps its just me that didn't appreciate their comedy. Thanks.
My record is like just over 2 minutes.. It would've been more impressive if it was one of those masks that conceals your nose, instead of an open mask like that :)
@doshelly23 Thankfully he didn't die so there will be a new season :P, sadly the new season hasn't been filmed yet so we can expect to see it on TV around halfway through this year :)
@doshelly23 If you look up their tricks then you'll see that they have done this trick several times and he always pretends to die. Just part of the trick to get a reaction from the audience.
@doshelly23 They said it themselves, more than once. They hate tricks that you have to risk your health/life, so they wouldn't do it themselves, he is definitely alive.
@doshelly23 Cmon, do you really think that Pen's and everyone elses reaction would be like that if he really died? He wouldn't joke and crew would run up to the stage with medics trying to save him.
@Chel5ea8oy66 Yes this was the last episode of the first season, there was quite a few other people filmed but never shown, there is going to be a season 2 this year though :)
@rrrrko I'm not 100% sure when it will be aired but I've heard that they were filmed when Mr Teller was in England working on a West End stage show, incorporating magic into it.
Mask has a breathing device. Penn Jillette is very open and honest about never being in any kind of danger in any magic trick he or Teller have done. It is never dangerous, the fact we are all talking about it, is good enough for @PennJillette and @ MrTeller.
Brilliant trick, even though you can see how Penn gave the card to Teller at ~8:50 (when he is holding the key) - the name card is wider than a playing card and there were plenty of time to move that card to the inside of the mask. However, the execution and another person with a timer really make it an amazing show.
@LinX1515 I respectfully suggest that you examine between 09:36 and 09:40. Use pause and frame advance and between 09:38 and 09:40 watch the monitor ABOVE DAN'S HEAD not the action taking place at centre stage.
I thought there was that one guy (magician) that did not use any trick but trained for a very long time and then managed to hold his breath over 15 minutes.
Also I've seen this routine already as they've done it with John Cleese.
@rvaugh230 he's breathing through the googles, as you can see the condensation building up in the glasses, and clearly there's a tube leading from the googles up either of his arms, he always has an arm left or right up the box, and the top of the box/tank is open = unlimited air.
@spartanwarmaster Yeah I believe they have a plant just in case, audiences in Britain are often more polite and less likely to call out to them so just in case no one says anything the plant is there :)
@spartanwarmaster Nope, they do this trick all the time. It's one of their older tricks. First time I've ever seen this trick done where someone actually yelled. Let Him out.
His goggles are connected to an oxygen tank.He is breathing through his nose. There is a tube that feeds him air. There is another tube that takes air which means no bubbles.
Just held mine for 3 min (going by the video time, not the time the girl is calling out. Looks like editing made her stopwatch a little fast lol)... personal best by about half a min, though I am relaxed.
