Don't fret, it's made right. The stop needs to be right where it is so you don't have a loose and floppy log which will cut your arm off. A stop on the other end? that makes no sense. I've sawed with a buzz saw for forty years.
It should have a back stop instead of a front stop would keep you from pushing your hand through but than again alot of old people are faulty in their thinking lol.
why do cut small lenghts and not larger ones ?
