Man i gotta say this guy is pretty amazing, although he doesn't play with the typical Bach style he makes it work. and i noticed that he uses the same shoulder rest as me, a Kun Bravo
I was lucky to attend many years ago a few lessons with Mr.Kavakos in a seminar, during my conservatory studies...he is simply amazing....as a violonist,as an artist as a person...
He is not a violinist. He is a complete Artist and I do believe that makes the great difference. As I see my country deteriorating every day, Kavakos stands there along with some other people (very few indeed) as a living hope. I d love to see him performing in Cyprus where I live and I d love to interview him for the radio I work for.
I bumped into Kavakos literally,in the York Gate instrument museum at the Royal Academy Of Music,London.Being an instrument maker,i was walking around looking into all the glass display cases, looking at my favourite violins, turned quickly and almost walked into Kavakos,He's a big fella,Got talking about the Archinto Strad Viola in the collection, one of only ten that exists by Strad.Funny thig is at the time i wasn't aware of who i was talking to,but because i have a photo memory,i cringed later.
Although a greek i didnt liked too much leonidas playing especially many years ago b this is simply unbelievable ,the best recording of this piece i have ever heard or will hear, kavakos shows maturity here with not vibratos in the middle of the phrases but correctly at the end.
BTW does anyone have clips from the 1985 Indianapolis Violin Competition. In it Leonidas plays the most hair-raising Ysaye Sonata (no 6) I've ever heard, and he was only 18. He went on to make a CD of these Sonatas later but I liked the former interpretation much better.
I copied this competition on tape but lost it over the years. His 1985 interpretation of the #6 Sonata was played at a much faster speed and was absolutely breathtaking to listen too.
My teacher at the time said he had the fastest (and cleanest) 6ths she'd ever heard. His later recording was much slower and more introspective. Still excellent, but with much less zip.
are those five people in their right mind?

Young Menuhin's Bach recordings were my favorite...til now.
I am sorry that I am Greek and never bought a CD of him or listened to him live. That's sad .
Now, I know . :)
By the way , this sounds like ... I can't even make a comment on this.

Modern Violin. But cembalist mind. Baroque violin not necessary.

it would be great if someone had recorded the competition but i guess the dvd writers werent that common that days....:P
I like his recording of the ysaye sonatas, its technically as perfect as it gets, but i agree that there is not so much fire in it...
I have though a bad-quality rec of a recital here in greece when he was 20 or sg and he plays ysaye bach frank...
