This section of video on the DVD itself was... DVD quality. There's just no way to clean up a pixelated piece of Youtube garbage and make it look that good. Sure, you can anti-alias & smooth, then try to re-sharpen the image but it never looks that good.

If you compress say, a song into a 64kb .mp3 but then upconvert it back to the max bitrate, you don't get a near CD quality song afterwards no matter how much you try to clean it up. Instead you just get a 50+MB pile of crap.

The problem with anyone who really believes that you could get that kind of quality improvement with smoothing, anti-aliasing, and sharpen filters is that a) as has been said, why would CoS bother to pretty up the FLV before giving it to the feds, and b) look at the globe itself, nothing is "smeared" as it would be if you use anti-alias and smoothing to get rid of pixelation. The edges aren't just sharpened, they're superbly defined. That's from the master copy. CoS Epic Fail.

As a graphics and dv enthusiast, you cannot EVAR make an image or video higher quality than the source. You never gain information in translation or compression. You always lose information. There are no advanced NSA filters that can make that FLV have the resolution of the DVD. Thus, Scieno has the highest resolution master known. It came from them.

That's not entirely true. While you can never gain information back as such there are clever algorithms that can technically make very good guesses. It's never going to do much to improve the quality of a complex scene with many different people and objects but for simple patterns it can sometimes work out. A simple smoothing algorithm would really sort the youtube video out.

Backstory: Sometime in january a bomb threat against the church of $cientology was posted on youtube for A FEW HOURS at the most before it was removed (that's the video they are showing here).

Anyway, the church went ahead and made a DVD to give to the media and in that was a clip about that bomb threat. But people noticed, compared to other scences in it that were pulled off youtube. that bomb threat part was high quailty leading them to believe the church was behind the video.

Considering the amount of effects used in the video, I would say the footage of bomb thread is the same as the youtube one with some polishing.

The other problem is that this is probably stock footage which makes it accessible to anyone, including the authors of propaganda video.
