Saw him at the Cotati Cabaret in northern Calif. maybe 25 years ago. A small pub with a bunch of tiny round tables. My buddy & I were up front........ a few too many pitchers of beer. I kept hollaring "Ain't Misbehavin'" between songs. I probably pissed him off, because I don't think he ever did play it. Never took off his shades....and the closest he came to removing his hat....was to angle it slightly forward about a half an inch to thank the audience. Cool dude!
Saw him perform Feb.9th in Bloomington Ill. Very entertaining when he played. But spent waaaaaay too much time between songs mumblin and repeating silly things not at all pertaining to the concert. Real downer. The piano player was outstanding. Think maybe he's getting old and a little coo-coo
I'd give anything to see Leon Redbone in person but I'm so far north I can (almost) see Ice bergs from my house. No one passes thru here except bears.
Go see his show while he's still touring..money well spent. even better in person. Its like he's just dropped by for a wee drink, and a visit, playing in your own frontroom.
@whojacka It was in the first season, which aired in 1975. If I remembered the the name of the gal who hosted I could get you the episode number! I want to say it was somewhere between 10 and 15.
First time host Jill Clayburgh (April 30, 1944 – November 5, 2010) with first time musical guest Leon Redbone Season 1, Episode 15, Aired 2/28/76. This is really old!
This was in mid 1976 right? I was 10 or 11 yrs old when I saw this appearance on SNL and knew he was the real deal. He's coming to town next month and I plan on finally seeing him in person.
This song is from the early 1930s. It's called "Ain't Misbehavin'" and it was written by Fats Waller, who made it a million selling hit record during the Great Depression. This 1975 performance by Leon Redbone represented a throwback at the time to the bygone era of hardship 40 years prior to the air date. Now that we are reconsidering it after another 40 years, it shows how the themes and songs of long ago resonate to this day.
Sources say his real name is Dickran Gobalian, but that's never been confirmed. He does not fly, as he survived a plane crash several years ago....When he played the W.C. Handy Festival in Henderson, Kentucky, back in the 90s, he arrived in a van with Pennsylvania plates.
Thanks for posting this! I've loved Leon Redbone's records for years, but have never seen him live and never saw this clip before!
It's one of my fondest wishes to see him perform live!
Come to London Leon, there are lots of potential fans here! Why not do the WOMAD Festival Charlton Park next summer for their 30th Anniversary? They feature world music and as I am a regular there, and a displaced American, I'd love to see you there, representing the good ole USA and these great songs!
@artcuz1 He is Canadian...He was born in Cyprus and was raised in Canada where he started his carreer in Toronto...So he can represent the commonwealth...
I remember being simultaneously amazed, floored and delighted at this man's mysterious appearances on Saturday Night Live - it felt like time travel to me!!!
I was fascinated with Leon Redbone after seeing him on SNL. Finally got to see him in a live concert in 2010. Tremendous musician. No one else like him out there anymore.
@3man014 I wish I could upload it; I've got it. If you go on iTunes, you can download that episode for $1.99. That's how I found it. He also did his Walking Stick song on that episode :)

The one and only, the original. No substitutions allowed. Who could be his voice, his style or his presence? No one.

HIS SOUND IS ALL HIS OWN, HE SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING BACK IN THE EARLY 1900'S. LIKE THE OLD RADIO VOICES. I THINK HE'S VERY UNIQUE AND I LIKE HIM!!
