When I was little and watch the film over and over again, I wish that someday this would play at my wedding and with my choir (needed.nl) singing this, it would be the best day of my life!!!!!!
I really prefer this to the traditional Wedding March. It's been overdone. If I ever decide to get married, and in a church with an organ, I'm definitely going to consider this music. It's so beautiful and when you hear it you think of how beautiful Julie Andrews was walking down the aisle.
This was my wedding processional almost 16 years ago. I assumed the organist had sheet music. Sound of Music was my favorite movie as a little girl. I am an event planner & my father had passed away. I walked myself down the aisle. My wedding coordinator kept trying to push me down the aisle. She kept say "now", "now." As an event planner, I had timed the prelude. I think she was relieved when I make my entrance. I hope my 10 year old daughter will choose this for her processional too.
This is wonderful!!! I always wanted to hear that without the added "How do you solve..." and you blessed my morning. Fantastic, amazing, playing that by ear. My Dad would do the same (may he rest in peace) listening over and over until he had every note. Thank you for posting this, and I love the way you ended it!!!
Wow very well done, if you have this written done or know of where I can purchase it I want this for my wedding. Please send any information to htdadftl@aol.com
@aaronnasser: A good arrangement of the processional is available at SheetMusicPlus(dot)com. The catalog number is 199005. Make sure you get the organ arrangement and not the one for piano.
The sound of music recording itself, if it indeed was a theatre organ, was smashing. This was a drama....and the Wurlitzer is the mistress of our imaginations. We needed an organ to sound a little "souped up" to stir our emotions as Maria came down the ailse. Now, more to the point: This recording here is wonderful....and you are a great organist to make the dreams of a married couple come true. I will listen again and again.
Nice transcription... the only thing you missed (tongue in cheek here!) was the "bumble" that the original performer made when he went from the swell or choir down to the great immediately after the introduction when Maria was about to come down the aisle! (completely and totally kidding here) You did a great job of transcription.
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted this for my wedding processional----unfortunately, I didn't get it, for either wedding (LOL!). The organists didn't have any sheet music for it. Thank you for putting it on here---at least, I can listen and dream!
Dear Theremin37, thank you so much for playing, recording and posting this piece. The Sound of Music is one of my favourite films and i find this music very music very moving. My name is Maria and had I married at an earlier age I would have loved to walk down the aisle to this music (if not the words – ie how do you solve a problem like Maria. I think that’s a question I m still waiting for God to answer) I don’t know if you played in the film, but you sound very alike. Th. xx
I wish that in the movie version of the Sound of Music, they would have used the pipe organ throughout the entire scene of Maria walking down the aisle instead of using the vocals of "Maria" .
The organ is a very powerful instrument and would have made that scene more poignant instead of adding the stupid singing on top of it.
Bummer, I mean, that you didn't play the 'How do you solve a problem like Maria' Shoot, when I watch TSOM I just love that they introduce the wedding with the refrain of one of the songs they started with. A whole lot of musicals don't do that these days.
Despite that. Awesome!!! That's what ya need to do with an organ, none of this accompanying choirs stuff, let it shake the church (or other building) with its might (or P, depending on the song of course... :)) Thanks for this. Very cool!!
where is it possible to find the sheet music for this piece?? do tell me...coz i have already checked some sites.......though i havnt really found any suitable one....well any suggestions?
My Aunt was married 30 years ago and had this music played at her wedding. I'm getting married and having just watched the film - again!!! have decided to have this for going down the aisle - it's fab!
I'm not sure where you looked for the sheet music, but we used the entire wedding processional (printed and purchased) in 1983 for our wedding. Of course the Maria part was not written into that. It was fairly easy to find even then, and was absolutely beautiful and my favorite part of the wedding music!
when i was a little girl i dreamed of having this played at my wedding! So exciting to find out someone had the same idea..and to actually hear what it would sounds like. thanks for making my day!
@theremin137 I think @robertgift meant the version from the movie should have been recorded in a cathedral. You did a fine job, and I am jealous of your ear skills to be able to get that from the record. Thanks so much for this!
I think this song is beautifully written and beautifully played. Is there a longer version by chance? Did you find sheet music for the piece, or did you play by ear?

This brings back memories for me. I was married at St Mary's church, in Luton England on Sept 24th 1983 and this was the processional I had chosen. St Mary's has an amazing organ and this song resonated, it was spectacular. The only slight hiccup was that no one was expecting this to be the bridal processional so some people were confused about standing. Other than that, it was the most amazing moment of my life, I felt like a Queen walking down the aisle to this. Thanks for posting it this.
I love this processional music for a wedding...and I have always identified with Maria...maybe be4 I turn gray, I will have reason to use this at my own first wedding...I just turned 57 years old.
My soloist did not think it was appropriate for me to have "Climb Every Mountain" during my wedding; was supposed to be sung after we exchanged vows, but instead, SHE decided that it would be played prior to the Ave Maria!!! I was furious, as I paid her good money, and SHE made the decision for ME! Please let your brides have what they want, especially if they are not too outrageous. This song had so much meaning to me since childhood, and I couldn't have it!
Does ANYONE know where I can get a digital version of this arrangement or ANY arrangement for organ? I need it ASAP and can't wait until it ships via snail mail.
I so want this for my wedding. Ever since I was a child and I watched the Sound of Music, I always found this piece to be so regal and absolutely beautiful!
Finally! I have been telling people for years that the organ they were hearing in the movie is a theatre organ without trems! And I always wondered which organ it was. I'll have to look up the Morton at Glendale and see if there's any info on it!
Excellent performance and to have been transcribed by ear is just pure amazing. However as an organist, I am in a little dilemma, as I have a bride in July wanting to walk into this and I am unable to source a copy of this in the UK for a quick dispatch. The only copies I can find are in the US. Does anyone have a digital copy of the sheet music for this so I can get it quicker? Delivery from the US from sheet Music Plus is 4 to 6 weeks and is subject to UK Customs not holding the package up.
An excellent 'version' of the film, I am in a little dilemma here as I have a bride wanting this at her wedding in Late June, however the only copies of this to buy are in the US and take 4 to 6 weeks to get delivered and could be held up in Customs which would be my worse nightmare. Does anyone have a digital copy of this??? This would greatly help me out!
It might not be considered secular because it was written for a wedding, just not a real one. And Wagner's Bridal Chorus and Mendelssohn's Wedding March are DEFINITELY not allowed unless you have an extremely liberal priest. I mean, the opera Wagner wrote it for concerned a failed marriage haha....I don't think you want that played at your wedding. Some secular marches are sometimes allowed but definitely not those two.

happy easter to all! time to watch sound of music again like evry christmas and easter! Many anniversaries are going on and this is still the perfect procession. please bring back the organ to the churches. but not too many borin songs. fast songs can be played on an organ. happy wedding to all!
Thanks for posting this. I can't find the clip from the film with Maria's wedding and the nuns singing. Don't know why no one's put it up, but I thank you for this organ composition. It's great!
My wedding processional! We don't have any of our ceremony on tape, my mother was supposed to have turned on the audio video equipment that was set up before she was escorted in...but in her nervousness she forgot! Thanks for the memories, my aunt played the Sound of Music processional for our wedding, minus the "How Do You Solve a Problem..." part. Absolutely my favorite wedding processional because it's so majestic & grandios!
I would love this at my wedding. The part in this video I would love as the congregation are stading ready for me to arrive, and maybe the bridesmaids coming down, and then I'd come down during the "How do you solve a problem like Maria" bit... Oh the fairytale :) I'm planning my wedding at the moment haha.
But seriously, arranging it by ear is incredible. Fantastic. I do a lot of that with the choir I teach, so I appreciate how long that takes in itself.. But this is incredible. Great work :)
what is the sheet music called and how could i find myself a copy...all i have been able to turn up on google and amazon are piano solo...no organ solo wich makes me sad b/c you play it so well...i'd recommend more pedal stops for a fuller, more powerful sound...but very excellent job at transcribing by ear...thats friggen awesome!
I am getting married in July and this is our wedding processional! It is beautiful! Any music store should have the sheet music for it. I went to a music store and they had it right there. It is a beautiful piece of music, that is for sure.
Good for you! I had the 60's sheet music which omitted that wonderful introductory part. so I did an aural transcription of it , as you did, and have played it many, many times for many, many brides. I like it so well I even play it just "for me" sometimes.
Powerful! I love full organ majestic processionals like that. I've always liked that song from the movie. My wife always wanted that as her processional, but we didn't pursue it. I wish we had. You figured that out without sheet music? That's amazing! Good job.
I have the sheet music for this, and it isn't the same. Its just an "ORGANized" version of the tune of "how do you solve a problem like maria", as far as I know anyway.
I would have done anything to have this at my 2004 wedding, but was afraid it would be "how do you solve a problem like Maria..." I love this one! At least I had "Climb Every Mountain" before the wedding march! That was awesome.
I'm playing Sister Berthe in our school's production of the Sound of Music, and we get to sing to this...we did it the day with the full orchestra and costumes and everything...just about cried, it was so cool :- )
I have had the pleasure of singing at the Mondseekirche. It is one of the highlights of my singing career. For the movie they did take down the skeleton which normally adorns the alter. It was really cool to be able to sing in such a wonderful space- the sound floats over your head.
I too had the pleasure of conducting a choral concert in the Mondseekirche. What an awesome space. Prior to the concert the organist played the organ and it brought back memories of the movie. Who said nothing good comes out of movie music.
yeah i hate how some churches in l.a. are so cheap to fix really nice organ back in the day. they now use piano. even though i play piano i love the organ, especially in the organ
That's really cool! btw, I have since found out that a good arrangement of the processional is available at SheetMusicPlus(dot)com. The catalog number is 199005. Make sure you get the organ arrangement and not the one for piano.
I assume from your youtube posting you have sourced an organ transcription of the Soung of Music Wedding Processional - could you please tell me where? I've been looking or 30 years?
For some odd reason I'm not surprised that a theatre organ without tremulents was used. There is a richness in the voicing that states the difference subtly. I admire how you ended the piece before the chorus, simple and very elegant. If I didn't know what followed it I'd think it to be a wonderful choice for a processional. Unless of course the bride's name happened to be "Maria"...
I've always wanted this song for my processional but we're not supposed to use secular music and i think this may be considered secular. Is this church Roman Catholic?
Next time you hear Wagner's Bridal Chorus or Mendelssohn's Wedding March at a Catholic wedding, you should point out that these are both secular.
The Wagner Bridal Chorus is from the opera Lohengrin; it's sung by the women of the wedding party as they follow Elsa to her bridal chamber. The marriage is an almost immediate failure. Isn't divorce against the tenets of the Catholic church?
And the various trumpet tunes by Purcell, Clark, Stanley, etc., are also all secular.
Thank you theremin137 for the response, that's why I was wondering if we could use this processional. I know we don't allow the wedding march to be used. I'm not sure about Purcell, Clark, and Stanley. I think they're allowed because they were composed just as a march right? Not sure how it's decided but I'll ask my priest when it comes time. Thanks! Lovely job by the way...
Good point! Research into the matter may reveal interesting results comparing divorce rates between those who had the Wagner-Mendelssohn pair at their wedding compared with those who had a more high-church musical palette!
@theremin137 Umm. It's not that ridiculous. Roman Catholic weddings DON'T have Wagner's Bridal Chorus (I don't know about Mendelssohn.), or at least they aren't really supposed to. The marriage is a holy sacrament. It is the union of two people with each other and God. Church music is simply more appropriate. The focus should be the sacrament- religious music supports that.
@theremin137, neither of those selections are aloud in Catholic weddings. If you do hear the Bridal Chorus or Wedding March in a Catholic wedding, then someone is breaking the rules. In fact, the processional from Sound of Music probably would be aloud as long as long as none of the other familiar references to the movie are heard. The processional is quite different in style and orchestration then the rest of the movie's music. I think it would probably be ok...
@theremin137 IT si not ridiculous. What is ridiculous is your knowledge of liturgy (mass). The Vatican has made is very clear ONLY approved liturical muisc that supports the mass intentions is allowed. IF churchese are playing it they are in violation of cannon law.
@theremin137 Far be if from me to contradict our fine "Friar Randy" but I have to say that I believe the Pope is not so ridiculous nor is the Vatican either. My goodness! That ruling was brought about (and only enforced) when the leadership of the church needed a tactful way of expressing to the bridal party that they could not allow secular music. This hardly qualifies as secular or if it does it can only refer to the fact that it played to the masses in theaters and tv. Well done sir!
@theremin137 Are you an idiot or just play one on the internet? Have you studied the mass? It is not just a "play" where you can put any music you want or words you want in it! It is a religious symbolic ritual and everything in it has a meaning back to Christ. Cannon law helps keep that pure and on track. So that's your break...learn before you post!
@Randy02116 - Thank you for your kind and charitable comments. You stand as a shining example of the loving fellowship that Jesus taught his followers to embrace. (See Matthew 22:39.)
@Randy02116 You are the idiot for posting this. Have YOU studied the Mass? Or the Sacred Canon, for that matter? I doubt that you would begin to struggle with understanding even its most simple teachings. If so, your conduct would reflect its impact in your heart and life, causing you to "let the Light shine forth". Instead, you choose ignorantly to find fault with others. Look to yourself with a critical eye FIRST. And remain silent, if you can't speak kindness. Judge not.
@Randy02116 Partially true yes ... secular music is welcomed in certain parts of the liturgy - entrance or processional music may be secular, as too the recessional. Otherwise, we do have to stick to the liturgically approved music for the Mass. (And yes, I am a church organist - I know what I'm saying).
@Randy02116 That is, the entrance and recessional as opposed to a gathering hymn and a parting hymn - these need to be approved by the Liturgical Commission.
@theremin137 What I find so amusing is your hard core Catholic comments and a theremin screen name. Can you say secular? Have you ever read about the Popes of the Middle Ages? They weren't worried about cannon law or the Bible, for that matter. I guess they were going to wait for someone in the Catholic Church to pay their way to Heaven.
Some Mass movements come from secular tunes. What to do about that? EXCOMMUNICATE!!... the Mass? BAHAHAHA
@TheFlugelmeister I'm not quite sure what you're referring to as my "hard core Catholic comments." Religion-wise, I am about as far from Roman Catholic as a person could be.
I think all this pointless hoopla of "sacred" vs. "secular" music is utterly ridiculous. To me, ALL music is sacred and divinely inspired.
Furthermore, if all secular-in-origin music was removed from "approved church repertoire," the leftover pickings would be very, very slim.
They are Roman Catholic in the movie, if that's what you're asking. If you're having a mass, it's more important, but the non-secular music is more important for the songs within the service, not the processional.
I used to daydream about walking down the isle to this processional..........and I can hear the nuns singing, now, "How do you solve a problem like Maria"? Perhaps, I may request this in advance for my funeral. :D Followed by, Abide With Me.
Nice job, really! I loved that musical and still do! where can one find the sheets to this whole wedding "edition" of "How do you solve a problem like Maria" ?
I have wanted this music for my wedding processional since I was about 5 years old. Beethoven's 'Ode To Joy' will be the recessional music.

I mean, the opera Wagner wrote it for concerned a failed marriage haha....I don't think you want that played at your wedding. Some secular marches are sometimes allowed but definitely not those two.

Well done! My mother was a church organist for 30 years (+/-) and I remember well her doing much the same thing when this was requested!

Thanks for posting this. I can't find the clip from the film with Maria's wedding and the nuns singing. Don't know why no one's put it up, but I thank you for this organ composition. It's great!

I played this for a wedding once, but on a nasty little Baldwin. Sounds much nicer on a real organ. What church is this?

Beautiful! It sounded more like a Cathedral organ instead of a theatre organ! Amazing is how I describe this!!

@mabeek64
i wanted to know what is the actual processional name that is being played minus the solve maria lyrics in the movie?
would love to use it for my best friends wedding.

Good for you! I had the 60's sheet music which omitted that wonderful introductory part. so I did an aural transcription of it , as you did, and have played it many, many times for many, many brides. I like it so well I even play it just "for me" sometimes.
horndiapason 2 years ago
Powerful! I love full organ majestic processionals like that. I've always liked that song from the movie. My wife always wanted that as her processional, but we didn't pursue it. I wish we had. You figured that out without sheet music? That's amazing! Good job.
WestechWatcher 2 years ago
I have the sheet music for this, and it isn't the same. Its just an "ORGANized" version of the tune of "how do you solve a problem like maria", as far as I know anyway.

I would have done anything to have this at my 2004 wedding, but was afraid it would be "how do you solve a problem like Maria..." I love this one! At least I had "Climb Every Mountain" before the wedding march! That was awesome.

I have had the pleasure of singing at the Mondseekirche. It is one of the highlights of my singing career. For the movie they did take down the skeleton which normally adorns the alter. It was really cool to be able to sing in such a wonderful space- the sound floats over your head.
coloraturakae 3 years ago
I too had the pleasure of conducting a choral concert in the Mondseekirche. What an awesome space. Prior to the concert the organist played the organ and it brought back memories of the movie. Who said nothing good comes out of movie music.

Dear Mr Musicandmath
I assume from your youtube posting you have sourced an organ transcription of the Soung of Music Wedding Processional - could you please tell me where? I've been looking or 30 years?
Thank you
Robert
RobertFolkes 1 year ago
For some odd reason I'm not surprised that a theatre organ without tremulents was used. There is a richness in the voicing that states the difference subtly. I admire how you ended the piece before the chorus, simple and very elegant. If I didn't know what followed it I'd think it to be a wonderful choice for a processional. Unless of course the bride's name happened to be "Maria"...

I've always wanted this song for my processional but we're not supposed to use secular music and i think this may be considered secular. Is this church Roman Catholic?
lacrossechick9 3 years ago
That is so ridiculous.
And the various trumpet tunes by Purcell, Clark, Stanley, etc., are also all secular.
theremin137 3 years ago
Thank you theremin137 for the response, that's why I was wondering if we could use this processional. I know we don't allow the wedding march to be used. I'm not sure about Purcell, Clark, and Stanley. I think they're allowed because they were composed just as a march right? Not sure how it's decided but I'll ask my priest when it comes time. Thanks! Lovely job by the way...
lacrossechick9 3 years ago
@theremin137
Good point! Research into the matter may reveal interesting results comparing divorce rates between those who had the Wagner-Mendelssohn pair at their wedding compared with those who had a more high-church musical palette!
Diapason16ft 1 year ago
@theremin137 Umm. It's not that ridiculous. Roman Catholic weddings DON'T have Wagner's Bridal Chorus (I don't know about Mendelssohn.), or at least they aren't really supposed to. The marriage is a holy sacrament. It is the union of two people with each other and God. Church music is simply more appropriate. The focus should be the sacrament- religious music supports that.
ANonnieMiss 1 year ago
@theremin137, neither of those selections are aloud in Catholic weddings. If you do hear the Bridal Chorus or Wedding March in a Catholic wedding, then someone is breaking the rules. In fact, the processional from Sound of Music probably would be aloud as long as long as none of the other familiar references to the movie are heard. The processional is quite different in style and orchestration then the rest of the movie's music. I think it would probably be ok...
nolatto 1 year ago
@theremin137 IT si not ridiculous. What is ridiculous is your knowledge of liturgy (mass). The Vatican has made is very clear ONLY approved liturical muisc that supports the mass intentions is allowed. IF churchese are playing it they are in violation of cannon law.
Randy02116 1 year ago
@Randy02116 Ohhhhhh, well yes, let's boil the terrible violators in oil for failing to select only "Vatican Approved" music! (Give me a break)
theremin137 1 year ago
@theremin137 Far be if from me to contradict our fine "Friar Randy" but I have to say that I believe the Pope is not so ridiculous nor is the Vatican either. My goodness! That ruling was brought about (and only enforced) when the leadership of the church needed a tactful way of expressing to the bridal party that they could not allow secular music. This hardly qualifies as secular or if it does it can only refer to the fact that it played to the masses in theaters and tv. Well done sir!
mabelsmill 1 year ago
@theremin137 LMAO!
minkyblack 1 year ago
@theremin137 Are you an idiot or just play one on the internet? Have you studied the mass? It is not just a "play" where you can put any music you want or words you want in it! It is a religious symbolic ritual and everything in it has a meaning back to Christ. Cannon law helps keep that pure and on track. So that's your break...learn before you post!
Randy02116 1 year ago
@Randy02116 - Thank you for your kind and charitable comments. You stand as a shining example of the loving fellowship that Jesus taught his followers to embrace. (See Matthew 22:39.)
God's peace be with you.
theremin137 1 year ago
@Randy02116 You are the idiot for posting this. Have YOU studied the Mass? Or the Sacred Canon, for that matter? I doubt that you would begin to struggle with understanding even its most simple teachings. If so, your conduct would reflect its impact in your heart and life, causing you to "let the Light shine forth". Instead, you choose ignorantly to find fault with others. Look to yourself with a critical eye FIRST. And remain silent, if you can't speak kindness. Judge not.
dieselheart001 1 year ago
@Randy02116 Partially true yes ... secular music is welcomed in certain parts of the liturgy - entrance or processional music may be secular, as too the recessional. Otherwise, we do have to stick to the liturgically approved music for the Mass. (And yes, I am a church organist - I know what I'm saying).
roseanne74 1 year ago
@Randy02116 That is, the entrance and recessional as opposed to a gathering hymn and a parting hymn - these need to be approved by the Liturgical Commission.
roseanne74 1 year ago
@theremin137 What I find so amusing is your hard core Catholic comments and a theremin screen name. Can you say secular? Have you ever read about the Popes of the Middle Ages? They weren't worried about cannon law or the Bible, for that matter. I guess they were going to wait for someone in the Catholic Church to pay their way to Heaven.
Some Mass movements come from secular tunes. What to do about that? EXCOMMUNICATE!!... the Mass? BAHAHAHA
TheFlugelmeister 1 year ago
@TheFlugelmeister I'm not quite sure what you're referring to as my "hard core Catholic comments." Religion-wise, I am about as far from Roman Catholic as a person could be.
I think all this pointless hoopla of "sacred" vs. "secular" music is utterly ridiculous. To me, ALL music is sacred and divinely inspired.
Furthermore, if all secular-in-origin music was removed from "approved church repertoire," the leftover pickings would be very, very slim.
theremin137 1 year ago
As a Catholic, I think we have the most beautiful churches and cathedrals in the world, not to mention the most magnificent music.
Go listen to some Gregorian Chants.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
They are Roman Catholic in the movie, if that's what you're asking. If you're having a mass, it's more important, but the non-secular music is more important for the songs within the service, not the processional.
osumanda 1 year ago
@lacrossechick9 Actaully, you may have this song as the ressional humn. The mass is over after the final blessing. This is Cannon Law
