Eddie in my book is still one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) guitar players of all time. Jimi broke a lot of the molds, but Eddie really broke away and re-invented the guitar. And his sound was always sooo huge!!!!! Nobody ever sounded quite like Eddie. I love watching him play. I did get to see him live. He's not the player he once was, but I cherish the memories if his glory days, and always will.
Finally, the only reason I'de be back stage would be to shake his hand, maybe hug him and tell that God loves him, as do many millions of people, and that life can be so much better. And ask him if I could pray for him, that's it. Oh, and maybe could we jam a little just for fun and could I pick his brain for playing tips! :)

What the the people have to remember that say "Ed used to be" is that he freakin Thomas Edison , Ben Franklin on the guitar. He invented this stuff. Yea had influences so did everybody else. I thought it was damn good. Eddie has been an idol of mine for a damn long time. Haha. But he only did a few sweeps some where in the middle of the video. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't really love them but definitely impressive.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts on comparing and contrasting African music to the performance by Eddie in his back yard (the video above).

Yeah, I'm a bit disturbed too by the sloppiness as well, mostly because I'm from a generation where we have come to expect precision from my guitar heroes (Steve Via, Joe Satriani, Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin etc.). However, I consider him a sort of inventor, one of the first to come out with a technique (I am aware that he didn't actually invent tapping). It was the 70s and the fact that people weren't doing this sort of thing made Eddie's work notable. I still enjoy listing to his stuff.

What the the people have to remember that say "Ed used to be" is that he freakin Thomas Edison , Ben Franklin on the guitar. He invented this stuff. Yea had influences so did everybody else. Everybody gets old. He's still kickin ass better than most of them and moving and jumping while he's doing it. Ever tried to play eruption while standing up. It's not real easy.

Does anyone remember when Eddie was Cool? And has anyone noticed that hes been play the same 10 licks since 1986? Dont get me wrong, Eddie will always be somewhat of a hero to me, but come on, its almost embarassing to even speak of him when this is what you get nowadays. He was God to me at one point in my life and I am gratefull that regardless of this kind of shit, I can throw on an old Halen album (not Hagar, tho there was some alright shit here n there) and still rock the fuck out.

When he was doped up long and far enough he played some odious crap that I refused to put on my bootleg mix tapes, and I didn't buy his stuff if it didn't sound good to me. Musicians lose their creative edge over time, iust as old VH fans only want to hear Ed wank Eruption over and over and over. I prefer Ed to wank while sober but its okay to move on altogether

I grew up on VanHalen (listening and playing) and I'm not sure if this was taped at a time when he was still battling the bottle, but he seems about as wasted as a human could possibly have been and still been standing. He's MUCH better than this footage would suggest. MUCH... MUCH... MUCH.

Yeah, I'm a bit disturbed too by the sloppiness as well, mostly because I'm from a generation where we have come to expect precision from my guitar heroes (Steve Via, Joe Satriani, Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin etc.). However, I consider him a sort of inventor, one of the first to come out with a technique (I am aware that he didn't actually invent tapping). It was the 70s and the fact that people weren't doing this sort of thing made Eddie's work notable. I still enjoy listing to his stuff.

This is why nobody takes him seroiusly anymore ........while the rest of the tone deaf fans keep blowing smoke up his ass ! It cost me a fortune to see this guy play and he dissappointed big time by playing out of tune and out of time with the band. That close...at that volume...anything less than even a basic mixed Shure SM-57 is going to sound like crap. Don't blame Eddie for it sounding like dookie.

I was a camera operator at this party. Some where there is a full blown pay per view video, but I can't find anything we shot.
After drunk Eddie stop playing it turned into a lezbo pool fest. I know because they hade me and 3 others from a 10 camera shoot go and cover it.
