Wow, I never thought a contralto could actually sound so sweet and lovely, appart from powerful. Simply beautiful, thanks for sending me this, I´ve actually learned a lot from these videos you´ve sent me.
This mus be one of Braslau's most beautiful recordings. It is a truly lovely voice and used exquisitely. Most importantly she has an immediately recognisable timbre. One has only to hear two or three notes to know who is singing.
Surely though, this is an electrical recording and must have been made around the late 20s or early 30s - not 1914 as labelled?.
Further our earlier correspondence, and for others who might be interested, this is actually an acoustic, on the 10-inch single-sided Victor batwings label (catalog number 64475), and dated September 28, 1914 in The Victor Red Seal Discography, Volume 1, Single-Sided Series, 1903-1925), written and compiled by Caruso discographer John R. Bolig (Mainspring Press - 2004). A lovely recording. Many thanks!
Hi Ginny: As always, in grateful appreciation. Thank you! Doug -- PS: Her coffin bearers were like a Who's Who of the classical music world of 75 years ago.
Dear, I begin every day with a video from your channel, it's a great delight. Thanks. Noway you come to Paris next time without my taking you to the best restaurant in town.
Hi Bob: Looks like 21 electrical sides for Columbia, and 50 acoustics for Victor (she was only 43 when she died, of lung cancer, in 1935). Tnx & Rgds. Doug --
MOLTO BELLO!!! Thank you my friend for sharing this Rare Performance of Great Contralto SOPHIE BRASLAU (1892 – 1935).

Absolutely beautiful! A voice like molten gold. And what great shape the recording is in for a recording of that age! Great post.

Doug,
So very nice. I was saddened to read below in your comment to Bob that she died so young and to such a dreadful illness.
