@dimdaman While they can be used to immobilize a spine segment, they don't always have to. The rods pass through pedicle screws which anchors them to the spine. The screws are usually polyaxial, allowing for movement.
Had this surgery on December 7th 2009. It ruined my life. My body is rejecting the hardware and it gets infected all the time. When it gets infected they have to go in and wash the metal out. I am getting them removed Dec. 13. The hardware also rubs on my muscles causing terrible pain. I have been on narcotics for a year and I'm only 17. Don't get this surgery!
@Dancingbob93 Wow, thank you for posting this. I will have a surgery on my back very soon on 5/2/2011 because of kyphosis, a disorder in which on spinal disk is oddly bent causing my whole back to lean forward and the only solution was surgery with rods and screws. My question is, what back disease did you have to get this surgery? im afraid that my surgery will be similiar to you problem but as you know, not all diseases are the same...thanks again.
@Dancingbob93 I know just how you feel. I had it too and my body rejected it. This was on 2004. I'm going back to have it again, i haven't been able to work since then. Just hope this time it goes well. I wish i hadn't had it done. I was fine as i was but thought i would feel better with a more straighter spine.
I used to have quite severe Scoliosis, my back disappeared behind my shoulder blade and I used to have lot’s of facial pain – lots of blinking and facial spasms.
At 38 I got it fixed without an operation using a machine called Theraflex and the blinking stopped and the whole back is visible. Get your Physio/Oesteo/Chiro/Doctor to get one.

If its not for the Asians such as Indians for example then USA wouldn't have any hospitals, so don't come here and try to tell us how to run our business.
I'm not American you idiot! I don't give a fuck who runs what in your backward country. Thank GOD Indian's run the USA's hospitals. They've got more intelligence and work ethic than lazy bastard Americans.
Interesting. What education do spinal surgeons need to become a surgeon because i'm really interested in becoming a Spinal Surgeon after my education. For now i'm a 15 year old sophmore in High School.
medical schoool, residencey, i think then 3 more years of a specific branch of it. then around 31-32 u start making the big bucks (meaning possibly millions a year)
Spinal Orthopedic surgery is the most competitive field in Orthopedic surgery, which is amongst the top five specialties in medicine. You have to be the best of the best. It's not just the money though. If you're going into medicine for the paychecks you've made a wrong choice my friend. Several years back I was the same as you, just a sophomore in high school, now I'm a student studying medicine at a top school. You gotta follow your dreams!
Ok yea i do know how to write properly, i didn't know this was my english class, if it was i would've written differently. god people like you bug the heck out of me. coming in here and showing your intelligence as if you're some big shot.
I'm grown up, but you still have some growing to do, since you don't know how smart us indians are in studies. Since you're talking about cleaning toilets, maybe you should go do that. I mean, you came up with the idea, how about you go try it out, it'll be a good party time job for you.
@indian838 My doctor is Indian and he is outstanding. It's idiots like you who give them a bad name. Don't turn this into a race issue when it was never about race. I laughed at your spelling, not the colour of your skin.
You lot always have to deal the race card for sympathy.
@AmelieYvette "You lot always have to deal the race card for sympathy."? Your grammar isn't that hot either smart ass. I don't really give a shit if your dad's a doctor, and you probably have a better chance of becoming one since your dad is a doc. There are some people out there that want to be something that their parents will be proud of than your spoiled ass coming in her, and thinking you are so smart.
@AmelieYvette Now don't go judging indians about their work skills, I perform many many surgery's with indian co workers, and they are really smart people and i've learned a lot from them. Also out of my 6 years of being a Surgeon I have to say that if it weren't for indians then there would not be that many Hospitals, so watch what you say before you judge someone
Actually you haven't been a surgeon for 6 years nor have you performed ANY surgeries. You are 20 years old and you're still at school. Your profile says so. You're a stupid kid who's into hockey.
hello email some of ur questions about becoming a spinal surgeon i will help u anyway i can one thing though your looking at between twelve and fifteen years of med school and just about seven years of residency depends on how u do
So with the rods in the spine, the spine is locked in that position, the person loses flexibility in the spine?

One of the top two medical schools in the country. You should try interning, it definitely helped me decide. Gives you a more hands on approach.
