  • i have a problem with xp and win seven

i have 27 hard drives on my pc i use esata card that support 20 hard disk and the rest connected to motherboard and im out of letters a to z are taken and i dont want to use raid is there any way to add more hard drives if i use Windows Home Server

    thanks

  • all you have to do is mount some of the drives to an empty NTFS folder.

to so this, just go to my computer and right click > click manage

under the left panel, select "disk management"

in the top of the window you should see a list of currently connected drives. select the frive you would like to set up, right click and click "change frive letters and paths"

you can then remove the drive letter and replace it with a path of an empty folder.

  • i'm not sure, but maybe it would go like drive :aa :bb, you know what i mean?

  • Excellent overview...very helpful and appreciated!

  • Thanks!

  • Helpful Vid! but I dont know what to do... I have a home network with 5 computers on it and one is a old laptop running xp pro and is hosting a website and 2 game servers and is a ftp server. I have a 1 yr old hp pav that we are not using. Should I install homeserver on it?

  • Thanks for the comment. Windows Home Server is excellent, I recommend it in a heartbeat. Thanks for your post - FrugalTech

  • good vid

  • I put WHS on a p4 computer I found at a garage sale for $5.00. I works great. I am looking forward to learning more about this software.

  • Thanks for the comment!

  • 99 dollars at frys, it was at this price.

  • Bruce - I agree with your appraisal of the product. In fact, as you do point out, it's a very easy to use product with one semi-fatal flaw. There is now way to backup the server OS to protect against catastrophic failures. In fact, I lost my server twice and the RESTORE option did not work. This was over a year ago, however, and I am still using and loving the product. I do wish Microsoft would offer a way to do the OS backup!!

  • There is way around that like using Acronis software to make a copy of your installation onto another hard drive.

  • I use the HP Mediasmart WHS, and it's great. Not the cheapest hardware choice, but it's very easy (and cheap!) to extend with another hard drive.

  • Thanks! You answered the questions I had!

  • You are most welcome

  • I provide IT Solutions for small businesses and I currently have 2 customers running Windows Home Server as the server solution since April 2008. Both companies have less than 10 employees. Windows Home Server is a great solution when you do not need fancy application like exchange.

  • It really is an excellent value compared to it's larger cousins! Thanks for the comment

  • No never heard of that. I presently use Xubuntu on a laptop, Kubuntu on one desktop, Mythbuntu on another desktop. I will stick with what i know, and the Ubuntu family just works for me.

If i come across a spare PC, i may try out that distro you mentioned, just for fun!

  • Good video as always. I would suggest a low-end PC on a switch as a linux front-end to the internet. Perhaps Damn Small Linux, any flavour of Ubuntu family (Xubuntu i would use), Puppy Linux. A low-spec P4 with linux front end would protect the windows machine from constant attacks, no need for resource-heavy antivirus, malware. Just my 2 cents.

  • Thanks! You are right, have you looked at Untangle Open Source Gateway? This thing is free pretty simple to use, and runs linux ;)
