  • another good song of Eric! My heart melts each time my son plays E.J. songs.

  • My guess is that this performance occurred at a venue that used to exist on 6th street called Steamboat. I think it's my voice in the video. I'd say about 84ish....

  • Oh My God, I have nerver found san awesome accuracy in playing guitar than in Eric Johnson, gifted artist, no doubt about it!

  • amazing musician...I would love to meet him!

  • I would never imagined that EJ could play the ending just identically to the recording. The man!

  • unreal

  • What year is this?

  • Wow- this has to be 87 time frame. The Hair and having the orignal Tones line up. Roscoe also has shorter hair. Killer. Tones rules. Emerald Isle and Bristol shores!!!

  • In my adult life, no ones music has moved me more.

  • Is this from the Metro in Chicago?

  • EJ just absolutely nailed it.

  • From 5:20 - 7:48 I felt as if I were standing in a West Texas desert at sunset watching the Sun drop between the clouds....

  • man EJ is a master improviser with chords

  • You can really hear the Jimi Hendrix influence on this cut.

  • I wonder how old he is here and what year it is.

  • eric is god

  • that "japanese tapping thing" is his koto technique

  • ..0.49.. enjoying haha

  • On the studio album version of this song, I always thought the note at 7:29 was a mistake. But he reproduces it here in live performance. I wonder if he's just trying to be true to the recording & includes that sort of off-note, or if it was intentional on the original studio recording. I read an interview where he said he was improvising in this outro on the original studio recording. When he hits that note on the album, you can hear him slide it up one fret to "correct" it.

  • It's called a #11th ...very common once you listen to lot of jazz......it's the note that when you learn to hear it and apply it correctly, you have moved up a notch in the jazz camp haha

  • its called a tri-tone, its an augmented 4th. youll learn about it if you take music theory. led zepplin uses it in one of their songs.

  • dancing days is one of em'.

  • It's not in his usual style, I think you are right... probably was a mistake and he liked it and kept it, but it *is* a common element in jazz.

  • young and cute

  • wow.

  • I saw Eric Johnson in 1990 with Joe Satriani in Spokane Wa. I thought Eric stole the show.

  • Eric is my Fav, The first time I saw him live

It was a sell out, one of his roadies heard my plea to get in he took a bar chair and set on the stage.

In front of Eric samps and he told me I had to sit there or he would get in trouble.

It was great, if Jimi had lived and learn to love country music I fell he would be like Eric.

  • Man! I had tears in my eyes at the end! And I'm a guy!

  • awesome! is this at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago? Tommy Taylor's playing is fantastic and so is Roscoe Beck.

  • The old Rockefellers, Houston, TX

  • Ah, back when video cameras had decent microphones. WTF is up with these new audience recordings? Compressing LIKE A MUG

  • The venue kind of looks like The 'Steamboat' that used to be on 6th street in Austin

  • to the two people at the bottom of the comment list...

i am close friend to tommy, and know that he would be extremely happy to know that people still recognize him, and his music. a truly wonderful person. check him out on myspace! he sings!

    - jade

  • I saw another video on youtube that had him in the same clothes, and the heading said it was from Rockefellas in Houston texas. I guess that might be a possibility for a location.

  • Love that Hendrix Tribute slide lick at 5:31!!!!

Thank you so much for posting my Guitar God!

  • EJ seldom plays this one. Very rare. Thanks for posting.

  • my name is Tommy Ayers and I love eric johnson

  • The Jamanese tapping thing is actually a koto tecnique he talks about it on one of his instructional vids and has started to use it quite a bit. Type Eric johnson koto tecnique to see a bit of the lesson. Nice vid by the way. Where was he playin??

  • God bless you posting the man that inspired me to pick up the guitar in the first place.

Especially this rare gem that would be forever lost if you would not have posted it.

    Thank you!

  • Thank you for uploading this.

  • You bet. More from this show posting shortly.

  • you can actually hear tommy taylor doing his opera in the beginning. just like the record

  • Just a quick ramble. I got to talk to Tommy when he was signing at the Ludwig booth at the NAMM show some years back. In his entire hour, one other person approached Tommy besides me. Then the kid from Social Distortion was up (who never actually played on any SD records since they used a session guy with better meter) and the line for him wrapped around the place. Kind of absurd :-)

  • cool

  • Thanks for addin some Eric.. I'm havin Eric withdraws lol...
