It's amazing to see the physical manifestation of feeling when I watch people like Diana and Joyce DiDonato record in a studio. As a singer watching her move teaches me so much. Beautiful :)
Diana Damrau and Christian Thielemann made one of the most desirable recordings of Strauss' Orchesterlieder with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, soprano, conductor and orchestra are at their best on this CD. And also Strauss is on his best in his Lieder. HIghly recommended.
personally Diana Damrau is my favourite soprano. when it's desirable to sing gently, she rises to the challenge and her voice sounds so delicately and beautifully, but when it's needed to sing with great passion and anger there's no one better then her ( her performance of Der Holle Rache at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden is still, in my opinion, the best ever recorded). Contemporary singers may sound the same, but Gundula Janowitz also sounds similar to other singers from her age.
I am sorry, but I much prefer Gundula Janowitz over any soprano since. Diana's voice sounds so typical of many 20th-21st-century sopranos with heavy warbles and loose technique, so common that most listeners seem to be unaware of it and, therefore, accepting. I find a more focused voice to be far more attractive.
@sfkcbf first of all, yes, many contemporary singers do sound the same. I love the older singers and conductors a lot better. But she does NOT have a wobble and does NOT have loose technique. I don't like her because I am unaware of her inadequacy and just blindly accept it. One cannot compare her to Gundula Janowitz either. They have completely different fachs... not even remotely similar voices.
You want to insult Diana Damrau? Fine. But DON'T insult me. I know more than you could ever learn.
@sfkcbf Janowitz's voice was unusually focused and straight even for her time. You say the word "attractive", but what it really means is just "taste". There was never a rule for voices having to sound just like Janowitz. In fact, till the 30's and 40's people would find even more "attractive" a voice with faster vibrato and more heterogeneous colours, and I guess they had great singers by then (Supervía, for example). Tastes change. What can't change is the respect for the music.
her English is almost as great as her voice :)

"He [Strauss] loved female voice..." I am certain he would've adored Damrau's voice.

@sfkcbf Based on what?????
She doesnt get this great carreer just by singing with warbles and loose technique.
Janowitz is a diffrent time space and now there are NEW singers!
Damrau is one of these wonderfull new generation.
People will love her, like they do and always will.
